Nursing Center for Community Health<br />

Annette Mitzel, MSN, RN, Director<br />

<strong>The</strong> Nursing Center for Community Health (NCCH) was founded in 1982 as one<br />

<strong>of</strong> the first academic nurse managed centers in the United States. Operated through<br />

the School <strong>of</strong> Nursing, the NCCH and its six satellite clinics in the community functions<br />

as an Academic Nurse Managed Clinic as well as serving as a practice site<br />

for faculty and students.<br />

Within the NCCH Advanced Practice Nurses lead an interpr<strong>of</strong>essional team <strong>of</strong> students<br />

and faculty from the College <strong>of</strong> Health Pr<strong>of</strong>essions to provide non-emergency,<br />

primary, and episodic health care to vulnerable and uninsured community residents.<br />

Serving both the local community and <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Akron</strong> the Nursing Center<br />

facilitates collaboration, not only between faculty and students, but among various<br />

health care disciplines, building a model for interpr<strong>of</strong>essional education, practice,<br />

and research. As part <strong>of</strong> its mission the Center strives to positively affect the health<br />

and wellness <strong>of</strong> the individual and the greater community.<br />

Nutrition Center<br />

Kathy Schupp, MA, RD, CSG, LD, Director<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Akron</strong> Nutrition Center is a comprehensive center for the study and<br />

delivery <strong>of</strong> effective nutrition interventions. It provides the needed link between UA<br />

nutrition expertise and the extensive preventative health care needs <strong>of</strong> the campus<br />

and surrounding community. <strong>The</strong> center serves as an educational resource for faculty,<br />

staff, students and the community, provides nutrition services and conducts<br />

research in chronic disease treatment, wellness and disease prevention, nutrition<br />

information technology, sports nutrition, food safety and sanitation, and community<br />

nutrition.<br />

Taylor Institute for Direct Marketing<br />

<strong>The</strong> Taylor Institute for Direct Marketing is an educational and research organization<br />

focused on Direct Interactive Marketing at <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Akron</strong>, College <strong>of</strong> Business<br />

Administration, on the fifth floor <strong>of</strong> the Polsky Building.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Taylor Institute <strong>of</strong>fers two Direct Interactive degrees: a Master <strong>of</strong> Business Administration<br />

(MBA) with a concentration in Direct Interactive Marketing and an undergraduate<br />

Advanced Marketing Minor in Direct Interactive Marketing which is available<br />

to Marketing and IT Management majors. <strong>The</strong> Taylor Institute is home to a wide range<br />

<strong>of</strong> marketing courses that focus on emerging direct interactive marketing trends<br />

encompassing e-Commerce, Interactive Marketing, Social Media, Integrated Marketing<br />

Communications, Marketing Management, Marketing Research, and Marketing<br />

Analytics.<br />

In addition to academic programs, <strong>The</strong> Taylor Institute provides <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Akron</strong><br />

students with real-world learning experiences in working on direct interactive projects<br />

for clients, businesses, and organizations.<br />

Training Center for Law Enforcement and<br />

Criminal Justice<br />

<strong>The</strong> Training Center for Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice provides Basic Peace<br />

Officer Training Academies, Police Refresher Training, Firearms Requalification, and<br />

In-service Seminars.<br />

Training Center for Fire and Hazardous<br />

Materials<br />

<strong>The</strong> Training Center for Fire and Hazardous Materials brings the <strong>University</strong>, govern -<br />

ment and industry together into one comprehensive regional center to integrate educational<br />

programs, fire and hazardous materials training and other applications <strong>of</strong><br />

fire and safety technology. <strong>The</strong> center is chartered from the Division <strong>of</strong> EMS and<br />

<strong>of</strong>fers all State Certified Classes for firefighter certification. <strong>The</strong> Center employs 190<br />

certified Emergency Services Instructors to fill any training requirement for municipal<br />

and business and industry. <strong>The</strong> center coordinates seminars and workshops<br />

presented by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the National<br />

Fire Academy, the Division <strong>of</strong> State Fire Marshal, and other related organizations.<br />

Training in all phases <strong>of</strong> hazardous materials containment and fire prevention and<br />

control is provided under contract to various municipalities, industries and agencies.<br />

<strong>The</strong> programs are supported by the faculty <strong>of</strong> the Fire Protection Technology<br />

degree program and the Emergency Management degree program in association<br />

with other state and nationally recognized pr<strong>of</strong>essionals. <strong>The</strong> Training Center serves<br />

a multi-county area, having partnerships with the Medina County Career Center<br />

and Cuyahoga Valley Career Center and <strong>of</strong>fering all levels <strong>of</strong> Fire Classes at the<br />

Medina County <strong>University</strong> Center.<br />

<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Akron</strong> Magnetic Resonance<br />

Center (UA/MRC)<br />

Peter Rinaldi, Ph.D., Director<br />

<strong>The</strong> MRC provides UA students and faculty, and the industrial and external academic<br />

scientific community, with access to routine and state-<strong>of</strong>-the-art magnetic resonance<br />

facilities and technical expertise. <strong>The</strong>se capabilities include instruments for<br />

solution and solid state NMR, and the expertise <strong>of</strong> technical staff with experience in<br />

using these instruments for problem solving in chemistry, biological sciences, and<br />

polymer science and polymer engineering. Students and faculty are trained in the<br />

use <strong>of</strong> the instruments and NMR techniques in general through an ongoing educational<br />

process. <strong>The</strong> center has instruments in <strong>The</strong> Knight Chemical and Goodyear<br />

Workforce Development and<br />

Continuing Education<br />

<strong>The</strong> mission <strong>of</strong> Workforce Development and Continuing Education is to serve the<br />

people <strong>of</strong> Northeastern Ohio by <strong>of</strong>fering courses and programs that increase access<br />

to <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Akron</strong>, linking it with community, business and industrial workforce<br />

needs.<br />

Workforce Development and Continuing Education at <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Akron</strong> provides<br />

a wide range <strong>of</strong> educational, technical, and research services that enhance<br />

the effectiveness and quality <strong>of</strong> workforce learning. In addition, Workforce Development<br />

and Continuing Education provides services that require the special expertise<br />

<strong>of</strong> the faculty and staff to better serve the economic and social development <strong>of</strong><br />

Northeastern Ohio. Grant monies may be available to help with costs.<br />

Student Affairs<br />

Counseling Center<br />

<strong>The</strong> Counseling Center provides psychological counseling, career planning, educational<br />

counseling, testing, outreach, and consulting services to the <strong>University</strong> community.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Center is staffed by a culturally diverse group <strong>of</strong> licensed psychologists<br />

and doctoral trainees. Counseling services are free and confidential to enrolled students.<br />

<strong>The</strong>re is a fee for testing services. <strong>The</strong> Center is located in Simmons Hall,<br />

Counseling Services<br />

• Short-term personal counseling and psychotherapy addresses many areas including<br />

stress, loneliness, anxiety, and depression; alcohol and drug use; relationships<br />

(family, partners, friends), sexual assault; oppression, cultural identity and selfesteem.<br />

Bi<strong>of</strong>eedback services are also available for stress management. ULifeline<br />

is an informative mental health and wellness link on the Web page.<br />

• Career counseling helps students decide on a major and career direction. Students<br />

identify interests, values, abilities and goals and relate these to the world <strong>of</strong> work.<br />

Testing and occupational information is available through counseling, workshops, and<br />

on website.<br />

• Educational counseling helps students develop educational goals and motivation,<br />

as well as effective study skills. A streaming study skills Web video is on the Web<br />

page.<br />

• College Survival Kit workshops cover many topics including improving academic performance,<br />

career planning, increasing wellness, and personal issues; as well as providing<br />

support groups for students <strong>of</strong> diverse cultures. Brochures are available.<br />

Testing Services<br />

• Numerous testing programs including, CLEP, college entrance examinations, career<br />

assessments, academic placement testing, on-campus academic testing and learning<br />

disorder assessments are available.<br />

Outreach and Consulting Service<br />

• <strong>The</strong> Center regularly provides speakers for classes, residence halls, student organizations,<br />

and administrative <strong>of</strong>fices. Consultation is available for emergency and crisis<br />

situations.<br />

Career Center<br />

<strong>The</strong> Career Center’s mission is to provide career services to all students and<br />

alumni <strong>of</strong> <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Akron</strong>. Career Services for students and alumni include<br />

opportunities to participate in on-campus interviews with representatives from business,<br />

industry, education, and branches <strong>of</strong> the government. Numerous educational
