Appendix A – <strong>International</strong> examinations of UK awarding bodies<br />
Where a student takes more than the minimum number of<br />
subjects for the Cambridge AICE Diploma, the best results which<br />
satisfy the subject group requirements will count towards the<br />
award.<br />
CAMBRIDGE INTERNATIONAL DIPLOMAS<br />
The Cambridge <strong>International</strong> Diploma in Business (formerly<br />
Cambridge Skills and Career Award) assesses the practical<br />
application of career-based knowledge across a range of<br />
business-focused areas. The Cambridge <strong>International</strong> Diploma at<br />
Advanced level is equivalent to A level, and the Cambridge<br />
<strong>International</strong> Diploma at Standard level is equivalent to GCSE.<br />
The Cambridge <strong>International</strong> Diploma in Business (Advanced<br />
level) satisfies university matriculation requirements in lieu of A<br />
level.<br />
The Diploma is modular in structure, and to achieve a full<br />
Diploma at a given level, candidates need to pass both the<br />
compulsory core modules and the requisite number of optional<br />
modules.<br />
The assessment methods include written examinations and<br />
assignments, all externally assessed by Cambridge.<br />
Successful Diploma candidates are awarded Pass, Merit or<br />
Distinction, where, at Advanced level, Distinction may be taken as<br />
performance equivalent to the award of A level grade B, Merit to<br />
grade C and Pass to grade D. Three types of certification can be<br />
awarded – Full Diploma, Core Module and Optional Module.<br />
Institutions are advised to accept only those applicants presenting<br />
a Full Diploma.<br />
CAMBRIDGE INTERNATIONAL LEVEL 3 PRE-U<br />
CERTIFICATE (PRINCIPAL SUBJECT)<br />
National Qualifications Framework Level:<br />
Level 3<br />
Background:<br />
The Cambridge Pre-U Certificate, developed by Cambridge<br />
<strong>International</strong> Examinations (Cambridge), aims to prepare young<br />
people for success in their undergraduate studies. The<br />
qualification is different from A level in several respects. The<br />
certificates are available from a range of 28 subject syllabuses<br />
that will provide opportunities for students to go deeper into<br />
their chosen specialisms, and assessment will be more<br />
stretching at the top end. The Certificate (Principal Subject) is<br />
accredited by Ofqual as having 380 Guided Learning Hours.<br />
Students may choose to combine subjects to form part of the<br />
Cambridge Pre-U Diploma (see section on Cambridge Pre-U<br />
Diploma).<br />

The Cambridge Pre-U Short Course is available in modern<br />
foreign languages, mathematics, further mathematics and<br />
global perspectives and can be taken in the first or second year<br />
of study. They are offered in order to encourage students to<br />
develop a broad subject portfolio. The Certificate (Short Course)<br />
has been accredited by Ofqual as having 180 Guided Learning<br />
Hours.<br />
