A general consensus is form<strong>in</strong>g that universities are fail<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the tasks for which they<br />

were first created. What then, are the conditions for a new social contract between<br />

universities and society? The Chair engages <strong>in</strong> the articulation <strong>of</strong> issues ly<strong>in</strong>g at the<br />

<strong>in</strong>terface between university and society <strong>in</strong> <strong>Africa</strong>; and thus <strong>in</strong>vests <strong>in</strong> cultivat<strong>in</strong>g a theory<br />

<strong>of</strong> praxis through l<strong>in</strong>kages with <strong>in</strong>novative non-formal centres/ <strong>in</strong>digenous communities <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>Africa</strong> and <strong>in</strong>ternationally with the aim <strong>of</strong> generat<strong>in</strong>g new <strong>in</strong>sights and build<strong>in</strong>g discourse<br />

coalitions on the transformation <strong>of</strong> universities with<strong>in</strong> <strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong>, <strong>Africa</strong>, and beyond.<br />

Universities as stewards <strong>of</strong> considerable national assets is challenged to apply<br />

knowledge and help deliver change, and to generate practical and strategic learn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

experiments..<br />
