Changes in academic structures<br />
The post structures in the colleges were reviewed on request and revised as required.<br />
However, specifically, the following major changes took place in <strong>2012</strong>:<br />

was instituted to provide support for the<br />
management <strong>of</strong> tuition, learner support<br />
and community engagement matters.<br />
The Wiphold/Brigalia Bam Chair in<br />
Electoral Democracy was established.<br />
It is situated in the Dept: Political Science.<br />
The incumbent was appointed and the<br />
Chair is making good progress.<br />
College <strong>of</strong> Education<br />
A refined post structure for the<br />
college was introduced<br />
Three existing schools and four departments<br />
were reconfigured into two schools<br />
and ten departments.<br />
An Office <strong>of</strong> Teaching Practice was<br />
established.<br />
Integration and reconfiguration<br />
<strong>of</strong> the Centre for Community<br />
Training and Development and INSET<br />
College <strong>of</strong> Graduate Studies<br />
Centre for Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Teaching and<br />
Community Development<br />
Establishment <strong>of</strong> two new schools, namely<br />
Transdisciplinary Research Institutes and<br />
Interdisciplinary Research, and Graduate<br />
Studies<br />
Placement <strong>of</strong> the Institute for Social and<br />
Health Sciences in the college<br />
In addition to the above, enabling<br />
post structures were developed for<br />
the Thabo Mbeki <strong>Africa</strong>n Leadership<br />
Institute and the Horticulture Centre<br />
on the Florida Campus.<br />
PQM clearance and<br />
accreditation<br />
In the College <strong>of</strong> Law eight postgraduate<br />
diplomas were approved<br />
by the Higher Education Quality<br />
Committee (HEQC). In the School<br />
<strong>of</strong> Accounting Sciences five undergraduate<br />
qualifications and three<br />
postgraduate qualifications were<br />
accredited with pr<strong>of</strong>essional bodies,<br />
namely the long sought-after<br />
accreditation <strong>of</strong> three qualifications<br />
with the international Chartered<br />
Institute <strong>of</strong> Management Accountants<br />
(CIMA), the continued accreditation<br />
<strong>of</strong> three qualifications with the<br />
<strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong>n Institute <strong>of</strong> Chartered<br />
Accountants (SAICA), accreditation<br />
with the Institute <strong>of</strong> Internal Auditors<br />
(IIA), <strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong>n Institute <strong>of</strong><br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Accountants (SAIPA)<br />
and the Association <strong>of</strong> Certified<br />
Chartered Accountants (ACCA).<br />
In the follow-up accreditation visit<br />
by the Engineering Council <strong>of</strong> <strong>South</strong><br />
<strong>Africa</strong> (ECSA), all (except three)<br />
undergraduate engineering<br />
programmes were accredited.<br />
The three programmes were,<br />
however, provisionally accredited<br />
until the end <strong>of</strong> March 2013 to give<br />
the School <strong>of</strong> Engineering time to<br />
address the issues raised. These<br />
issues have been addressed and it<br />
is anticipated that the programmes<br />
will receive full accreditation in the<br />
follow-up visit <strong>of</strong> February 2013.<br />
Awards<br />
Internally, six awards for Excellence in<br />
Tuition were made. At an external<br />
level Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Hendrick (CAES)<br />
was appointed to the International<br />
Federation <strong>of</strong> Parks and Recreational<br />
Areas academic board, academic<br />
committee; Ms Pandarum was<br />
appointed as the Chair <strong>of</strong> ISO/TC<br />
133 sizing systems and designations<br />
for clothes for the period 2011-2016<br />
and Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Modise was nominated<br />
as an advisory board member <strong>of</strong><br />
Tompi Seleka College <strong>of</strong> Agriculture.<br />
These acknowledgements <strong>of</strong> the staff<br />
are recognised and we applaud our<br />
colleagues.<br />
