Communicat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Information Society<br />

research associate <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Programme <strong>in</strong> Comparative Media Law and<br />

Policy at <strong>the</strong> University of Oxford. He has written and edited 15 books<br />

and more than 100 journal articles or book chapters, as well as research<br />

reports for national and <strong>in</strong>ternational, public- and private-sector organizations<br />

<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g UNESCO, <strong>the</strong> Japan Broadcast<strong>in</strong>g Corporation (NHK),<br />

<strong>the</strong> European Broadcast<strong>in</strong>g Union, <strong>the</strong> Government of Canada and <strong>the</strong><br />

Quebec M<strong>in</strong>istry for Culture and Communication. His current research<br />

focuses on issues and sites of communication policy mak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

context of globalization.<br />

Silvio Waisbord is a senior programme officer at <strong>the</strong> Academy for<br />

Educational Development <strong>in</strong> Wash<strong>in</strong>gton, DC. He was associate professor<br />

at Rutgers University between 1995 and 2003. He has written and coedited<br />

several books and articles on media policy <strong>in</strong> Lat<strong>in</strong> America,<br />

development communication, media globalization and journalism. He<br />

received a Ph.D. <strong>in</strong> sociology from <strong>the</strong> University of California at San<br />

Diego.<br />
