Commerce Unit: million US dollars Thailand’s exports to the European Union (in US dollar terms) Thai export to the European Union declined sharply in 2012, when compared with 2011, and in fact returned to the 2010 level. Thai exports clearly feel the effect of the Euro crisis and declined to all European Union Member States, but most notably to Denmark, Spain, Italy, the Czech Republic and Poland. Despite a decline of 8.5%, The Netherlands maintained its position as largest destination for Thai exports to the European Union in 2012, reflecting its strategic geographical location. Some 50 % of Thai exports to the Netherlands are generated by exports of electronic goods and electrical appliances. Some 22 % Thai exports to Belgium is generated by export of precious stones and jewelry. Thai exports of precious stones to Belgium were not affected in 2012, much unlike Thai imports, which did see an unusual sharp decline in 2012. 24 volume 2, 2013
Unit: million US dollars Thailand’s imports from the Netherlands (in Thai Baht terms) Thailand’s imports from the Netherlands grew by 4% in Thai Baht terms in 2012, a marginal difference with 1.6% growth in US dollar terms. Strong growth is registered in the import of articles of iron & steel, raw hide and leather, plastics, and optical equipment, reflecting the strong position of the Netherlands as an international transit hub for these products. volume 2, 2013 25
