summer programs ACADEMIC PROGRAMS GRADES DATES SAT PREPARATION 10-12 Session 1: July 12-23 Session 2: August 2-13 SUMMER SCHOOL 2-10 See Listings SAT Preparation Offered as a two-week course (July 12-23 or August 2-13), the SAT preparation course at Liggett is an excellent, efficient way to prepare for this important exam. All courses provide the following: familiarity with the format of SAT and ACT testing, review of major principles encountered in the critical reading, writing and/or math sections of the tests, computer-assisted assessment of personal abilities and identification of individual strategies for improvement. The cost of each course includes instruction, three practice exams, text books, and a subscription to the course’s online review. Instructors: David Butzu Rachel Kraft July SAT Preparation Students can take critical reading and writing and/or math preparation. The courses are designed to give a comprehensive review of the SAT exam. The math course meets from 9:00-10:55 a.m., while the critical reading and writing course meets from 11:00 a.m.-12:55 p.m. The program provides significant time for individual instruction and practice. The combined program is our best preparation for the SAT, but these courses allow students the option of studying only critical reading and writing or math. Dates: July 12-23, SAT math 9:00 - 10:55 a.m. SAT critical reading and writing 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Cost: $411.00 for critical reading and writing or math; $713.00 for both courses. August SAT Preparation The material and techniques covered in the July program is concentrated into this intensive SAT preparation course. Students are instructed in all areas of the SAT exam - critical reading, writing, and math. This class is for students who desire extra help or those who simply enjoy reading and writing and wish to accelerate. Instructor Shaughan Rumohr is a 1995 alumnus of Grosse Pointe South High School, and is in her second year teaching summer school at Liggett. Dates: June 21 - July 9 and/or July 12 - 30, 10:00 - 10:55 a.m. Cost for one session: $192.00 Cost for both sessions: $329.00 Math (Grades 2-4) Within the context of an individualized curriculum, students are taught foundational math skills in a fun environment. This class is for students who desire extra help or those who enjoy math and problem solving. Instructor Shaughan Rumohr is a 1995 alumnus of Grosse Pointe South High School, and is in her second year teaching summer school at Liggett. Dates: June 21 - July 9 and/or July 12 - 30, 9:00 - 9:55 a.m. Cost for one session: $192.00 Cost for both sessions: $329.00 Math (Grades 5-6) This class is a good review of fifth- and sixth-grade math concepts and skills. Individual needs are considered in the planning of the curriculum. Math games, math manipulatives, and brainteasers are used to reinforce the material. ead naturally (Grades 5-8) Would you like to move forward one or more levels in reading this summer? This is entirely possible as we use the award-winning, student-tested program “Read Naturally” in this class. Using stories on CD, each student works individually on his/her own level to improve reading fluency and accuracy, spelling, writing skills, and vocabulary. It’s fun and produces noticeable results! This class teaches and provides practice for many critical learning skills such as: active listening, taking good notes, tricks for memorization, getting organized, test preparation, and many more! Dates: June 21 - July 9 and/or July 12 - 30, 11:00 - 11:55 a.m. Cost for one session: $246.00 Cost for both sessions: $433.00 Middle School Math (Grades 7-8) This class is a comprehensive review and/or introduction to middle school math topics including: basic operations, fractions, decimals, percents, simple interest, measurement, ratios and proportions, plane and solid geometry, as well as pre-algebraic concepts and operations. Instruction is tailored to the math needs of the class members. Problem-solving strategies and real-life applications are also explored with each unit. Dates: June 21 - July 9 and/or July 12 - 30, 12:00 - 12:55 p.m. Cost for one session: $246.00 Cost for both sessions: $433.00 Spanish 1 Review This class is for students that have already taken a year of Spanish and need to have further study to prepare for second-year Spanish. Students will review the present tense and be introduced to the preterit tense. Students will also work to develop oral proficiency and vocabulary. Instructor Dr. Lauree Emery has taught Spanish for 27 years; the past 19 at Liggett. Dates: June 28 - July 16, 9:00 - 10:55 a.m. Cost: $493.00 Pre-Algebra This course is designed to introduce the students to algebraic concepts in order to prepare them for high-school algebra. Major emphasis is given to understanding the language of algebra. This course provides a foundation for the transition to upper school algebra. Instructor Sarah Dickinson is a Liggett upper school math/science teacher. Last year she enjoyed teaching freshman biology and algebra 1 at Liggett. Dates: June 21 - July 9, 9:00 - 10:55 p.m. Cost: $493.00 Algebra Bridge: Algebra 1 to Algebra 2 This is the perfect course for students who have just finished algebra I and need additional work with some of its more difficult concepts. This course will break down the more challenging parts of algebra I, allowing each student to gain understanding and confidence. Instructor Sarah Dickinson is a Liggett upper school math/science teacher. Last year she enjoyed teaching freshman biology and algebra 1 at Liggett. Dates: June 21 - July 9, 11:00 - 12:55 p.m. Cost: $493.00 English Composition (Grades 8-10) The purpose of this course is to assess the student’s general skill in scholarly and creative writing and then target areas for individual improvement. Students will also learn techniques in editing and constructive criticism by reviewing the work of their peers before it is submitted for grading. Lectures will showcase writing models for analysis by the class. Instructor David Butzu is a 1985 alumnus of Liggett and is in his eleventh year teaching summer school at Liggett.
