applications are submitted electronically and by using standardized
forms, allows the METP Team in Beijing to process them
within reasonable time in spite of the team's small size.
The entire month of January was spent which the first of
the two-tier selection process for METP, the pre-selection.
During this pre-selection each application went through a
standardized eligibility check and, if it passed, was thoroughly
studied by at least two members of an independent jury of
senior experts. By the end of January, just in time for the start
of the Chinese New Year festivities, the pre-selection jury
presented its conclusions: it recommended that 83 shortlisted
Chinese candidates and 91 shortlisted European candidates
should be invited to attend the second step of the selection,
the interviews and assessment centre.
All selection interviews were scheduled for February and
March 2010. They kicked off with interviews of all Chinese
candidates in Beijing over the course of three days. METP was
able to financially support the travel and stay of the Chinese
candidates and they came from all over China. Each candidate
spent only a half day with the selection itself, which consisted
of an individual interview and a group assessment and English
language assessment. The individual interview provided
the opportunity to discuss the candidate's business plan and
motivation. The group assessment focused on the candidate's
interpersonal skills and his/her command of spoken English.
European candidates were interviewed in two locations:
those already living in China were also interviewed in Beijing
in the course of one specially arranged selection day, while
all candidates residing in Europe were invited to Frankfurt for
their interviews over the course of four days. Also in the case
of European candidates, METP was able to financially support
their travel and stay in Beijing or Frankfurt respectively,
thereby guaranteeing that financial means of candidates are
not de facto selection criteria. European candidates, as their
Chinese colleagues, had the chance to present their motivation
and their business plan in an individual interview and
participated in a group exercise to assess their interpersonal
skills. In addition, METP's Chinese language instructors from
the University of International Business and Economics in
Beijing spent a few minutes with each European candidate for
a Chinese language aptitude test.
An independent jury of seasoned experts conducted
the selections in Europe and China. The team of ten jurors
consisted of senior officials of the European Commission and
the Government of China, as well as Chinese and European
academics and experts.
Finally, of the over 400 applications received, 50 Chinese
and 60 European candidates were selected to join METP 5 on
17 May 2010 in Beijing.
