8 th Annual African American<br />
Families Conference<br />
2006 African American<br />
Families Conference<br />
Congr<strong>at</strong>ul<strong>at</strong>ions on an outstanding 8 th Annual<br />
African American Families Conference! I<br />
know it seems unusual for <strong>the</strong> Conference<br />
Chairperson to being saying congr<strong>at</strong>ul<strong>at</strong>ions<br />
to <strong>the</strong> <strong>at</strong>tendees, supporters and volunteers but<br />
<strong>the</strong> truth is th<strong>at</strong> this conference is a “partnership.”<br />
It is <strong>the</strong> result <strong>of</strong> hard work, commitment and<br />
support from a number <strong>of</strong> people. Through support<br />
from Dr. Art Dunning and <strong>the</strong> Office <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Vice<br />
President for Public Service and Outreach, <strong>the</strong> Carl<br />
Vinson Institute <strong>of</strong> government, Dean Maurice<br />
Daniels and <strong>the</strong> faculty, staff and students in <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Work</strong>, we are able to <strong>of</strong>fer an<br />
outstanding conference every year!<br />
This year’s <strong>the</strong>me <strong>of</strong> “The Politics <strong>of</strong> Race<br />
and Persistent Poverty” was well received by an<br />
audience <strong>of</strong> practitioners, researchers and students.<br />
The conference was <strong>at</strong>tended by a 195 individuals<br />
from across <strong>the</strong> St<strong>at</strong>e <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong>. They were greeted<br />
with dynamic keynote and luncheon addresses<br />
from Dr. Hefner and Dr. Carlton–LaNey. O<strong>the</strong>r<br />
presenters represented agencies th<strong>at</strong> included Grady<br />
Health Systems, <strong>Georgia</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Labor,<br />
Economic Justice Coalition, A<strong>the</strong>ns Associ<strong>at</strong>es in<br />
Counseling and Psycho<strong>the</strong>rapy, Caring <strong>Work</strong>s,<br />
Inc., Community Connection, Sank<strong>of</strong>a Center for<br />
Community Development and Change, Inc., and<br />
Innov<strong>at</strong>ive Learning Concepts <strong>Georgia</strong>.<br />
Special thanks to <strong>the</strong> Honorable Judge Steve<br />
Jones for his ongoing support and commitment to<br />
<strong>the</strong> success <strong>of</strong> this conference!<br />
On behalf <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> conference committee and <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Work</strong>, we again say congr<strong>at</strong>ul<strong>at</strong>ions<br />
on a conference well done!<br />
