Benjamin Franklin<br />

Wedekind, or<br />

Frank Wedekind,<br />

was born in 1864<br />

in Hannover,<br />

Germany but grew<br />

up in Switzerland.<br />

His fa<strong>the</strong>r was a<br />

doctor and be<strong>for</strong>e<br />

her marriage,<br />

Wedekind’s<br />

mo<strong>the</strong>r was an actress. Although Wedekind played<br />

an influential role in <strong>the</strong> development of German<br />

epic <strong>the</strong>atre, and is considered a fa<strong>the</strong>r of <strong>the</strong>atrical<br />

expressionism, his work is not part of any particular<br />

school. He was, however, credited <strong>the</strong>n<br />

and now with being one of <strong>the</strong> first literary<br />

figures to identify<br />

and write about<br />

sexuality as a major<br />

driving <strong>for</strong>ce in <strong>the</strong><br />

human condition.<br />

After a number of jobs<br />

in which he traveled<br />

about, Wedekind<br />

landed in Munich at a<br />

time of renewed interest<br />

in <strong>the</strong> dramatic arts. It was<br />

<strong>the</strong> perfect environment <strong>for</strong><br />

his controversial Spring Awakening,<br />

written between 1890 and 1891<br />

while Wedekind was in his late<br />

twenties. Chronicling <strong>the</strong> lives of<br />

German teenagers attempting to<br />

discover <strong>the</strong>ir sexual identities,<br />

<strong>the</strong> play met with resistance from<br />

German producers and was not<br />

staged until some time later, heavily<br />

censored.<br />
