LDA Member Receives NADP Lifetime
Achievement Award
AlwaysCare Benefits,
Inc. is pleased to announce
that Louisiana Dental
Association member
Dr. Gene Sherman,
senior vice president of
business development and
professional relations at
AlwaysCare, has received
the National Association
of Dental Plans’ Gabryl
Award. The Gabryl Award is the NADP’s highest
honor, recognizing a lifetime of service to and
achievements for the association and the dental
benefits industry.
Sherman, a resident of Baton Rouge, joined
the dental benefits industry and became an active
NADP volunteer in 1994, after 17 years in private
dental practice. While working to advance the
dental benefits industry, Sherman has contributed
significantly in all of NADP’s core programs,
exemplifying the spirit of the Gabryl Award. Sherman
served on the NADP Board of Directors from 2002-
2008 and the executive committee as treasurer
in 2003 and vice chair from 2004-2008. He has
also served on the NADP Nominating, Audit and
Budget Committees; the Statistical TaskForce; the
Research Commission; and the FAIR Health Product
Development Work Group.

Oral Health Coalition Elects Officers
A group of stakeholders, from dentists to nonprofit
groups have come together through the
facilitation of the Louisiana Oral Health Program with
the Department of Health and Hospitals to develop
a state-wide Oral Health Coalition. Its mission is to
coordinate the provision of information, resources
and services so that people of all ages can have
excellent oral health. Dr. Greg Folse, LDA member,
has been elected as chair of the coalition and Ward
Blackwell, LDA executive director, has been elected
as vice-chair.

Dentists Honors LDA
Members at Annual
Convocation
The American College
of Dentists (ACD) recently
honored several LDA
members with awards during
the ACD Convocation held
on October 8 as part of the
American Dental Association
(ADA)
Annual
Session in
Orlando,
Fla. Those
honored
were Drs.
Terry
Fugetta
(NODA), L.
(Center, in robes) Drs. Edward Hebert and L. King
Scott were sponsored for membership in the ACD by

The oldest national honorary organization for
dentists, the ACD is widely considered to be “the
conscience of dentistry.” It was founded in 1920
to recognize dentists who have made significant
contributions to the advancement of the profession.
Fellowship in the College is by invitation and based
on demonstrated leadership and contributions to the
dental profession and society. Approximately 3.5% of
dentists are fellows of the ACD.
