LDA Member Receives NADP Lifetime<br />

Achievement Award<br />

that <strong>Louisiana</strong> <strong>Dental</strong><br />

<strong>Association</strong> member<br />

Dr. Gene Sherman,<br />

senior vice president <strong>of</strong><br />

business development and<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essional relations at<br />

AlwaysCare, has received<br />

<strong>the</strong> National <strong>Association</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>Dental</strong> Plans’ Gabryl<br />

Award. The Gabryl Award is <strong>the</strong> NADP’s highest<br />

honor, recognizing a lifetime <strong>of</strong> service to and<br />

achievements for <strong>the</strong> association and <strong>the</strong> dental<br />

benefits industry.<br />

Sherman, a resident <strong>of</strong> Baton Rouge, joined<br />

<strong>the</strong> dental benefits industry and became an active<br />

NADP volunteer in 1994, after 17 years in private<br />

dental practice. While working to advance <strong>the</strong><br />

dental benefits industry, Sherman has contributed<br />

significantly in all <strong>of</strong> NADP’s core programs,<br />

exemplifying <strong>the</strong> spirit <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Gabryl Award. Sherman<br />

served on <strong>the</strong> NADP Board <strong>of</strong> Directors from 2002-<br />

2008 and <strong>the</strong> executive committee as treasurer<br />

in 2003 and vice chair from 2004-2008. He has<br />

also served on <strong>the</strong> NADP Nominating, Audit and<br />

Budget Committees; <strong>the</strong> Statistical TaskForce; <strong>the</strong><br />

Research Commission; and <strong>the</strong> FAIR Health Product<br />

Development Work Group.<br />

Oral Health Coalition Elects Officers<br />

A group <strong>of</strong> stakeholders, from dentists to nonpr<strong>of</strong>it<br />

groups have come toge<strong>the</strong>r through <strong>the</strong><br />

facilitation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Louisiana</strong> Oral Health Program with<br />

<strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Health and Hospitals to develop<br />

a state-wide Oral Health Coalition. Its mission is to<br />

coordinate <strong>the</strong> provision <strong>of</strong> information, resources<br />

and services so that people <strong>of</strong> all ages can have<br />

excellent oral health. Dr. Greg Folse, LDA member,<br />

has been elected as chair <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> coalition and Ward<br />

Blackwell, LDA executive director, has been elected<br />

as vice-chair.<br />

honored several LDA<br />

members with awards during<br />

<strong>the</strong> ACD Convocation held<br />

on October 8 as part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

American <strong>Dental</strong> <strong>Association</strong><br />

(ADA)<br />

The oldest national honorary organization for<br />

dentists, <strong>the</strong> ACD is widely considered to be “<strong>the</strong><br />

conscience <strong>of</strong> dentistry.” It was founded in 1920<br />

to recognize dentists who have made significant<br />

contributions to <strong>the</strong> advancement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>ession.<br />

Fellowship in <strong>the</strong> College is by invitation and based<br />

on demonstrated leadership and contributions to <strong>the</strong><br />

dental pr<strong>of</strong>ession and society. Approximately 3.5% <strong>of</strong><br />

dentists are fellows <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ACD.<br />
