LDA news LDA Member Receives NADP Lifetime Achievement Award AlwaysCare Benefits, Inc. is pleased to announce that Louisiana Dental Association member Dr. Gene Sherman, senior vice president of business development and professional relations at AlwaysCare, has received the National Association of Dental Plans’ Gabryl Award. The Gabryl Award is the NADP’s highest honor, recognizing a lifetime of service to and achievements for the association and the dental benefits industry. Sherman, a resident of Baton Rouge, joined the dental benefits industry and became an active NADP volunteer in 1994, after 17 years in private dental practice. While working to advance the dental benefits industry, Sherman has contributed significantly in all of NADP’s core programs, exemplifying the spirit of the Gabryl Award. Sherman served on the NADP Board of Directors from 2002- 2008 and the executive committee as treasurer in 2003 and vice chair from 2004-2008. He has also served on the NADP Nominating, Audit and Budget Committees; the Statistical TaskForce; the Research Commission; and the FAIR Health Product Development Work Group. Dr. Greg Folse Ward Blackwell Oral Health Coalition Elects Officers A group of stakeholders, from dentists to nonprofit groups have come together through the facilitation of the Louisiana Oral Health Program with the Department of Health and Hospitals to develop a state-wide Oral Health Coalition. Its mission is to coordinate the provision of information, resources and services so that people of all ages can have excellent oral health. Dr. Greg Folse, LDA member, has been elected as chair of the coalition and Ward Blackwell, LDA executive director, has been elected as vice-chair. Dr. Terry Fugetta American College of Dentists Honors LDA Members at Annual Convocation The American College of Dentists (ACD) recently honored several LDA members with awards during the ACD Convocation held on October 8 as part of the American Dental Association (ADA) Annual Session in Orlando, Fla. Those honored were Drs. Terry Fugetta (NODA), L. (Center, in robes) Drs. Edward Hebert and L. King Scott were sponsored for membership in the ACD by (from left) Drs. Stephen Ortego and Eric Geist. King Scott (Northeast) and Edward Hebert (Southwest). The oldest national honorary organization for dentists, the ACD is widely considered to be “the conscience of dentistry.” It was founded in 1920 to recognize dentists who have made significant contributions to the advancement of the profession. Fellowship in the College is by invitation and based on demonstrated leadership and contributions to the dental profession and society. Approximately 3.5% of dentists are fellows of the ACD. 34 LDA Journal
Simmons Generates $426,000 for Implant Research Dr. David Simmons, assistant professor in the Department of Periodontics at the LSU School of Dentistry, has generated $426,000 since 2006 in new revenue to train periodontal residents in the latest techniques of implant placement and restoration. Of this total, there are seven fellowships funded by Straumann USA and Zimmer Dental.Dr. Simmons is principal investigator for two additional implant research studies funded with a $65,000 grant from Zimmer Dental and Astra Tech. Residents in the Department of Periodontics will place the implants in about 125 patients. He also was awarded an $11,000 Dental Education Support Grant from Zimmer. Southern Association of Orthodontists Local orthodontist Dr. G. Bradley Gottsegen was elected Director from Louisiana to serve on the Board of Directors of the Southern Association of Orthodontists. Directors are elected annually and may serve up to three consecutive years. Dr. Gottsegen is also the current President of the Louisiana Association of Orthodontists (LAO). LAO is made up of two Constituent organizations under the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO): the Southern Association of Orthodontists (SAO with 102 members) and the Southwestern Society of Orthodontists (SWSO), with the Mississippi River as the boundary. Dr. Corbin Turpin was elected to a three-year term as delegate from Louisiana to the AAO House of Delegates. Dr. Turpin will help to set policy that governs approximately 8,000 orthodontists who belong to the specialty organization. Dr. John B. Whitley Jr. of Baton Rouge was installed as President-Elect of the SAO at their annual meeting, which was held at The BROADMOOR in Colorado Springs, CO. Dr. Whitley served as Secretary-Treasurer of the SAO for two years and as a Senior Director for the past three years. He was President of LAO in 2007.
