Service will be on Sunday, December 16th at 10 a.m. and will be followed by a
BUS SERVICE
I regret having to give notice that the 23 bus leaving Haywards Heath at 22.10
hours no longer runs. Apparently no one was using this bus when checks were
made. In his letter informing me of the withdrawal the Assistant Divisional
Manager writes, “I would apologise for not being able to give you advance
warning of this withdrawal.”
From the Vicar (Kenneth Jeffery)
The practice of calling people by their Christian names has greatly increased in
recent years. This can occasionally lead to confusion or misunderstandings, for
instance when one person speaks of somebody by their Christian name when
someone else …. is referring to them by their surname. It is thought that a
misunderstanding of this kind has taken place in the case of St. Bartholomew. In
the lists of the apostles in the first three Gospels he is called Bartholomew,
which is in the nature of a surname. The opening chapter of St John’s Gospel
contains a story of a man called Nathaniel, and this is thought to be
Bartholomew’s other name. If that is correct it is the only story in the Bible about
St. Bartholomew. If it is not, and it is by no means certain that it is, we have none
at all.
Fund Raising – The “100 Club”
Please Join Our “100 Club” This is a fund-raising raffle in aid of St. Margaret’s
Church. The participants pay £12 at the beginning of each Club year, which is
from September to September; we hope to make the first draw this September.
A draw of one ticket will take place at the end of each month for £25 prizes for
ten months and £100 at Christmas and Easter.
Norman Grose
It is not always wise for the Parish Magazine to congratulate people on having
achieved great longevity… However, we will risk the wrath of Norman Grose by
announcing to the world that on July 18th he reached 90 not out, a magnificent
score. And that is not all, for as he started singing as a boy soprano in 1913, he
has been singing for no less than 70 years, of which 36 have been as a member
of St. Margaret’s Church Choir and of Ditchling Choral Society. He ascribes his
singing skills to his training as a boy chorister from a choirmaster, who was
Doctor of Music and an eminent Church musician. Norman’s rich bass voice has
been part of our music and worship for many years.
