Conclusion
ª All the variation can be reduced to a single factor: the status of the
root, which is accompanied with the availability of C-functors.
ª Chinese roots always have independent phonological realization,
and thus can be categorially valued in syntactic environment
without resorting to C-functors.
ª The lack of ING C-functor thus explains the optional
ORIGINATOR interpretation.
ª A new lexical ROOT can be formed whose content is attained via
en-search based on the combination of the roots’ contents, and
syntactically acategorial nature of the roots enables the head
movement and incorporation. This explains why Chinese has the
V-N type Syn-Compounds.
ª This analysis is also in line with the general spirit of Borer-
Chomsky Conjecture (Baker 2008), and the “Hierarchy of
Parameters” in the sense of Roberts & Holmberg (2010).
