of outdoor leisure activities. 

In this wonderful 

countryside, you can 

pursue at your own pace,

to you. On foot, by 

horseback, on water or

there is an activity for

Hiking 

For those who enjoy 

walking, there are nearly 

3000 kilometres of 

marked footpaths and 

hiking trails. And for the 

equestrian, 700 kilometres 

of bridle paths. 

Rock climbing 

and spelunking 

The Vaucluse boasts 

several world class sites 

for the pursuit of these 

sports. The mountains 

of the Dentelles de 

Montmirail are excellent 

for rock climbing; the 

karst of the Vaucluse 

ideal for potholers. 

Cycling 

The region is a veritable 

haven for cyclists. 

Between discovering the 

vineyards of the Côtes 

du Rhône, the lavender 

fields, the “perched” 

hilltop villages, and the 

Roman ruins, cyclists are 

spoilt for choice in the

Gliding 

For those who prefer to 

take to the sky, there are 

six gliding clubs in the 

Vaucluse offering to 

transport them to 

seventh heaven.

kayak 

There are at least fifty 

kilometres of river 

perfect for canoeing and 

kayaking in the Vaucluse.

activity centres in the 

region, one at Fontaine-de- 

Vaucluse and the

for these and other reasons, Vaucluse beckons nature lovers to come and enjoy countless outdoor 

activities throughout the area. 

Proud of its 3,000 km of marked hiking paths and riding trails, Vaucluse has enhanced its offer 

with a new Road Cycling Plan which aims to make Vaucluse an outstanding French and 

European cycling tour destination. 

Elsewhere, Vaucluse has undertaken the implementation of a county-wide master plan for 

equipment, sites and itineraries, in order to approach overall development of all outdoor activities 

(climbing, canoe-kayak, fishing, hang gliding and paragliding), in close collaboration with 

all the players in the field. Environmental friendliness and respect for the beauty of the natural 

sites in Vaucluse are among top criteria.

As local bikers and visiting bikers alike will tell you: “The Vaucluse is an absolute paradise for cyclists”. 

On small country roads or off the beaten track, biking remains one of the best ways to really soak up 

the Provençal atmosphere and surroundings. 

Here are several circuits you can bike to discover the Côtes du Rhône vineyards, the Lavender fields 

in the Sault area, the Dentelles de Montmirail mountain range, the Roman ruins at Vaison-la- 

Romaine, the hilltop villages of the Luberon, the Sorgues area, the impressive Nesque River canyons, 

and even … if you’re up to it, the legendary Mont Ventoux… 

Here is a selection of 15 cycling circuits for all levels of experience from family rides to the more 

demanding.

Description: This route is above all a family orientated one (be careful at the crossing of the 

secondary road at the exit). 

Water is omnipresent in the villages along the way. Fountains, old-washing places and streams are 

present along this itinerary. Throughout this route you will cross the Aygues river twice.

Description: Country lovers you are in for a treat ! This circuit will take you through a succession of 

contrasting countryside. Following the signs you will go through evergreen oak, forests, vineyard and lavender 

fields. 

In each village, you can stop to do a walk round the village to visit the picturesque streets and monuments.

Description: 

Along this trail you will travel through time, among Roman remnants, Medieval towns and villages 

perched high up in the mountains. 

The alternative athletic route between Roaix and Rasteau will take you along a little mountain path 

from which you will have an unforgettable view of the Dentelles de Montmirail, the Mont Ventoux 

and the Rhône Valley. 

On taking the other athletic route, you will discover the peace and tranquillity of the region.

TEMPLAR VILLAGES

Level : Discovery 


Description: This itinerary is ideal if you’re a nature lover, looking for a moment of calm or wishing to 

discover more about the local heritage! Throughout the circuit, you’ll see how the rivers Ouvèze and Aygues 

have shaped the landscape, carving out their beds and forming hills on which villages have been built. 

The imprint of the Catholic knights – the Order of Templar – is still visible. To properly complete this visit, we 

suggest you continue your tour of the Enclave by bike – the circuit is scattered with numerous relics of the 

Templar - in particular the remarkable commandery of the Templar at Richerenches.

LANDSCAPES OF THE

Description: This sport level route crosses the AOC Côtes du Rhône vineyards with the 

Dentelles de Montmirail and the Mont Ventoux in the background. 

Take the time to stroll around and discover the vineyard trail in Vacqueyras, the procession of 

sculptures in Gigondas and the streets and viewpoints of Beaumes de Venise and Sablet.

FROM THE BANKS OF

Description: This itinerary is entirely marked, and combines two bike trails for a 37-km loop. You can do 

just the first part, which covers 25 km, if the whole loop feels too long. 

The cycling goes from Bédarrides to Courthézon along a peaceful country road along the banks of the Ouvèze 

river. Then, the path takes you into the Ouvèze plain, where a mixture of vineyards and grain crops grow side 

by side. Around the village of Jonquières there are stupendous views of the cliffs in the Dentelles de Montmirail 

range, and of Mont Ventoux ! As you return you cycle through the heart of the vineyards that are part of the 

famous Châteauneuf du Pape appellation.

tower in Modène, perched village in Crillon-le-Brave, ochres of Bedoin, oratory in Saint-Pierre-de- 

Vassols, sarcophagi in Mazan…

LES TERRASSES

Description: This itinerary without any technical difficulties is a typical itinerary for family; it 

leads you through the area of producers of grape fruit “Muscat du Ventoux” and other variety of 

fruits like cherries, plums and figs from “Val de Nesque”. Take time along the way to visit all this 

little villages; and to refresh yourself on the water of the fountain. Let you be captivated by the 

landscape with variety of tonalities and so attractive view whatever is the season.

LE PLATEAU D’ALBION

Description: This itinerary will let you discover a perched, isolated land, where you will find alternatively 

vast areas of lavender and wheat, waving slowly according to the relief. This stony massif clamped between 

Luberon and Baronies, and you can find there infiltrated waters which reappear in Fontaine de Vaucluse. This 

calcareous land, of caves and avens, extends itself from la Montagne de Lure until the Mont-Ventoux. From 

Sault, departure of this itinerary, you will discover through this pleasant itinirary without big technical 

difficulties, villages where the time seems to have been stopped and where you will be charmed by the 

authenticity that have been kept. The practice of bicycle is already well integrated and you will find cycle track 

all along the road; from Aurel to Saint-Trinit, then in this Saint-Christol d’Albion well-known place to 

practise speleology, you will appreciate there a protected and beautiful environment.

GORGES DE LA NESQUE

Description: This itinerary which takes the tourist road of the "Gorges de la Nesque", stays the most 

“sporting" road if you compare it to those proposed on the whole territory: 22 km of progressive climb in the 

heart of a exceptional landscape: The Gorges de la Nesque, beautiful hydrogeologic breakthrough, wild 

canyon, where draw up themselves fantastic rocks which overhang an abyss throughout a road, marked out by 

tunnels and by belvederes - the one of Castelleras in front of majestic “Rocher de Cire” – At your arrival on 

Monieux you will discover the “Val de Sault”, its scents of lavender in summer, the relief which surrounds it 

and gives to this country a pleasant sensation to be protected. On the way back you will go down carefully 

along the “Monts de Vaucluse”, you will cross la “Forêt du Javon”, and will join by Méthamis the country of 

the “Terrasses du Ventoux”.

Description: Leaving from Saint Didier you will need a little courage going, at your own pace, towards 

the beautiful perched villages of the Vaucluse Hills. As a reward, you will be able to see from these rocky 

peaks, some magnificent panoramas of the Ventoux and various agricultural landscapes: grapes, Venasque 

Hills cherries, almonds…

THE SORGUES AREA

Description: This itinerary takes you through the beautiful villages and architecture of the 

Sorgues and Monts du Vaucluse area. Then on to Isle sur la Sorgue, knwon as the Venice of the 

Comtat, famous for its canals, water wheels, and antique dealers. The town has always been 

inextricably related to the fast-flowing crystal clear Sorgue river, the true treasure of the entire area. 

Then, on to Le Thor, built along the Sorgue river, and delightfully cool and breezy even in the heat 

of the summer. See the lovely Romanesque church, Notre-Dame-du-Lac. Thouzon Hill rises in the 

countryside – home to the fabulous Thouzon caves, and the ruins of a fortified priory. Then comes 

Châteauneuf-de-Gadagne, a charming town, cradle of the Provencal movement with a rich past. 

The village already existed iver a thousand years ago. At the top of the village stands the Château 

de la Chapelle, with a 360° view over Mont Ventoux, the Monts du Vaucluse, the Luberon and the 

Alpilles.

Description: This 236 kilometre long route around the mountains of the Luberon 

National Park is designed to let you discover the resources of this area of exceptional natural beauty.

The itineraries 

There are more than 4000 kilometres of hiking paths and trails crossing Provence from Mont 

Ventoux to the Luberon Hills. As you take these paths you are likely to come across a typical 

“perched” stone village with an invitingly cool bubbling fountain, or the red ochre hills surrounded 

by ancient cypress trees which characterise the region, and always the fertile plains perfumed with 

the scents of Provence. 

The Vaucluse Region is a land of wide-open space and light which offers the entire family an 

exceptional natural environment. 

The following are 10 family-friendly and well marked round trip itineraries ranging from 1 1/2 to 

4 1/2 hours long. There are detailed TOP 25 maps of these walks available and it is a good idea to 

have these to hand. 

Before setting off, remember to wear appropriate hiking clothes and take rain gear just in case, plus 

sufficient water and food for your walk. Don’t hike alone and be sure to let someone know when 

you are leaving and the expected length of your walk. You will need good hiking boots. And follow 

the rule of respect for nature and for your fellow walkers.

PDIPR (COUNTY WALKING AND HIKING POLICY PLAN) 

ORGANISING YOUR HIKE 

The department of Vaucluse has developed an organised system for hiking and walking paths 

(the PDIPR), which covers over 130 of the 150 towns in the region. 

In order to effect this ambitious plan, the Vaucluse General Council has identified and marked 

the paths suitable for hiking, riding and mountain biking, and has established over 5,000 

kilometres of these trails. People are clearly out and about in the Vaucluse! 

Since 1999, the General Council has taken a new direction in setting up the HIKING 

TOURING NETWORK. The purpose of the PDIPR is to protect the trails and paths from 

development, whether public or private. 

The Touring Network is a service provided for its users. It offers paths through public land 

which are maintained and well marked, open to hikers, bikers and horseback riders. The trails 

are marked according to the method approved by the FFRP (The French Hiking Federation). 

This system of marking makes it easy to follow the path without getting lost. There is a signpost 

at each intersection along the network indicating directions. This network is constantly being 

improved. 

The network covers the main hill regions of the Vaucluse, the preferred 

destinations for these outdoor activities.

and horseback riders.

arrows show the names of the next intersections,

crossings in the Mont Ventoux range, the direction 

and distance to the nearest village is shown, in case 

you are lost… 

In short, this network works like a road network, 

and you can orient yourself by reading the 

information on the sign posts where the paths 

cross.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION FOR 

WELL-INFORMED HIKERS 

MAPS 

The touring network is marked and has arrows, which helps you to identify where you are. 

Do, however, be careful – this does not mean you can do without the 1/25000th TOP 25 maps 

published by IGN with support from the General Council. These maps help you understand the 

entire setting in which you are hiking, evaluate the altitude changes and assess the difficulties. 

These maps are also indispensable if signposts are missing (through accident or vandalism) or if 

certain marks have disappeared for whatever reason.

SEASONS 

The mild climate in the Vaucluse makes it 

possible to hike, bike and ride all year long. 

In winter, you should choose lower altitudes, 

for Mont Ventoux can be covered with snow 

and can be very cold. In summer, choose 

higher altitude outings, for it will be cooler. 

Avoid the forests in summer, the fire risk is 

high in the event of dry weather and strong 

winds. Fall and spring are ideal seasons for hiking, biking and horseback riding 

throughout Vaucluse. 

NOTE: Due to risk of fire, the mountains may be closed by order of the local 

government.

Like anywhere else, be aware of 

the weather forecast before 

starting a long hike, bike trip or 

horseback ride.

EQUIPMENT 

Remember to wear good sturdy shoes if hiking 

for more than just a few hours. In the mountains, 

paths are rocky, and require good soles. Water is 

rare, so take along your own drinking water and 

in sufficient quantity, particularly in the summer. 

Like anywhere else, you must be prepared for 

sudden weather changes. Think about the wind, 

too, as the wind can make the temperature colder. 

This is very important when hiking on Mont Ventoux, which peaks at nearly 

2000 meters, as the winds can be very strong. In summer, be careful with the 

hot sun. Bring lots of water, particularly if you are out with children, as 

children can become dehydrated quickly.

CABRIÈRES AND THE 

SURROUNDING TERROIR 

Take your time, stop and discover the rich historical heritage and the 

varied rural landscapes, fashioned by centuries of work which continues 

to the present day. 

Description: Start from the Town Hall parking lot 

Walk to the center of the village, then follow arrows to the "Mur de la Peste" (Plague Wall). Go up the Grand-Rue, go 

in front of the church. At the fountain, go left on rue du Château. There is a stela in front of the château to the memory 

of the Waldensian massacre in April 1545. Continue on Chemin de la Pourtalette, then take Chemin de la Muscadelle, 

between the cultivated terraced fields - great view over the Lesser Luberon. The chemin turns into a steep, pebbly trail. 

At the top, at an intersection (there is the base of a cross), continue straight on and reach the Mur de la Peste. Turn right 

(north) and go along the wall which has been restored over a distance of 1.2 km until you reach the intersection by the 

DFCI water tank. Go right (southeast) on the trail which goes down toward the Calavon valley - great view from the 

Luberon to the Alpilles and the vineyards in the valley. Continue on the trail which winds south over 500 m and reach 

an intersection. Take the narrow trail on the left. It goes through a copse of green oak and juniper (Chemin des 

Pileuses). Go along a wall, then go between olive trees on the left and almond trees, vineyards and cherry trees on the 

right. At the Colimbou intersection continue straight on. At the fork, keep to the same direction amidst the olive trees 

planted on carefully tended terraced fields, then reach La Plantade. 

Go to the right on the tarred road which goes through a residential area and leads to the Route des Cèdres. 

Go right toward the village. At the entrance to the village at an intersection with a cross, look at the water stream which 

feeds the fountains and washing wells. Continue on Rue Haute and reach the square with the washing well and cross. 

Go right, reach a small square with a covered well, then continue straight to Rue du Château. 

Retrace your steps to the parking lot.

APT/LUBERON 

THE BOSQUE PATH - 

PONT JULIEN BRIDGE 

Distance: 11 km (r-t) 

A great family loop walk from the botanical trail “Le Bosque”, then 

near the Calavon river to reach the bridge “Pont Julien”, a Roman 

bridge built in 120 BC. 

Altitude change: + 70 m 

Time: 3 hours 

Starts from: Le Bosque sports complex 

(RN 100 in the direction of Avignon) 

Marking: yellow lines 

Description: From the Le Bosque parking area, go back to pick up, on foot, the dirt road blocked off by big 

limestone rocks. Continue on a trail which goes along the vineyards, almond trees and cherry orchards. Enter a 

green oak copse, and reach a vegetable composting station. Here, iron clay outcrops rich in iron ore take over from 

the white limestone. After a field of Lavandin, go downstream from the sewage station and reach the ruins of the 

Rabas mill (named after this little stream which is a tributary of the Calavon). 

Go up the karstic hill then go around the Ménage farm to the south. From here, take the road which leads to the 

Roquefure stables. Continuer on the little raod to the Roquefure château, which you leave to your left. The trail 

winds along cultivated dolines and has great views of Lacoste, on the left. Go through a wooded area (Aleppo pine, 

green oak), then go under the old railroad. Reach Pont Julien via a small road. 

To return, follow the small road for 150 m, then instead of going back under the railroad bridge, climb up the 

ballast and follow the former railroad track to the Roquefure road. From there, retrace your steps. 

Loop itinerary possible starting from Pont Julien. Time: 1 hour

LA BRUYÈRE 

Far from the best-known and frequentlyused 

sectors, discover unusual ochre hills, 

rich with rare, discreet species. This is a 

relatively easy and short walk which 

enables you to explore some of the most 

interesting aspects of the Luberon in just a 

few kilometers.

Start : village vacances hameau 

de Jean-Jean 

Description: Follow the path which takes 

off above the parking lot to the left. A few meters 

later, at a crossroads, go right on a trail which 

goes upward toward the top of the hill. 

Slightly later the first cistus plants appear - the 

cistus with leaves of sage, and the bigger cistus 

with laurel leaves. This species, like the heather 

with its small pink flowers, normally grow near 

the Atlantic, but are also found on the ochre hills 

in the Luberon where conditions are conducive 

to growth. At the sign "Trou des Américains", 

continue straight toward "Les Bruyères, Rustrel" (yellow marking). 

Before going on, you can do a short round-trip in the direction of Saint-Philibert, to go see the "Trou des 

Américains' which is actually a small temporary pond not far away, from the time the ochre was mined. This pond 

is now the site of the reproduction of seveal species of rare and protected amphibians. Deer and boar also come 

drink here and you may see their tracks. Back on the trail, pine begins to be seen - Norway pine (red bark at the 

top), maritime pine (straighter trunks). The path then goes along a rocky outcrop. Slightly after, a great view on 

your left of Saint-Satumin-d'Apt and the Monts de Vaucluse. At the end of this open section (there had been a fire 

in 2000), do not continue on the right, but follow the yellow marking on the left. 

Farther, you go above the ochre cliffs, where bee-eaters have built their nests. 

Continue on the yellow-marked path. Be careful at the 'Les Bruyères' crossroads to go up on the right in the 

direction of the ridge. Slightly later you will come upon a wider path which goes straight down to the hamlet 

"Jean-Jean". Do not follow the path which goes off to the right as you descend. 

At the end of the descent, leave the Jean-Jean hamlet on your left and go right on the path then the small road to 

return to your departure point.

VELLERON / COMTAT VENAISSIN

SUBARROQUES 

This hike is great for observing borie construction in detail. 



Time: 1 1/2 hours

Departure point: parking lot to the 

south of the village of Viens 

Description: Leave the village of Viens by the 

road to Céreste. 

After a Romanesque sheepfold building, turn 

right on a path which goes between two houses. 

Then, take a trail to the left. The trail goes along 

the edge of the cliff and offers a great view on the 

shady side of Reillanne and Céreste, side wooded 

with Austrian pine, and on the Calavon river 

valley. A bit farther on, the cliff trail overlooks 

olive groves. This is about the northernmost point 

where olive grows, showing that the Mediterranean climate continues to exert its influence here. 

At the bottom of the slope, go on your right, toward the Rossignol valley. The trail is horizontal at 

first, then climbs upward to reach the left side of the valley. As you go oup, notice the many signs of the 

massive clearing work that once took place, to clear the stones from the soil. All the stone walls and 

bories that have been built used the stones cleared from the fields. Observe the lintel on the first borie, 

and the corbeeled vault on the second, which demonstrates two different styles despite the same 

construction principle. At the top of Rossignol valley, on the edge of the field, take the trail lined with 

stone walls. On the right there are the ruins of an old stone house. On the left, there is a borie which 

has remained unfinished. At the point where the trail mmets the road, take a rigiht on a path which 

leads back to the starting point.

LE BEAUCET/MONT VENTOUX

Saint Gens or the curious story of a hermit and pilgrimages. Hiking through the narrow, wild valleys 

adds to the sensation of mystery, as does the return via the miraculous spring and the crosses and 

oratories.

Leave from: Saint Gens Hermitage 

in Le Beaucet 

Description: Leave from the Saint Gens 

Hermitage. 

From the hermitage (at 370 m altitude), go up the 

road some 250 m and reach the Combe de la 

Fontaine (cross, oratory). 

Go up on the left on the dirt path to the Lou 

Planestèu intersection (421 m). Continue on the 

right and go down on the small Clapeyrouse road 

(which means “site strewn with stones”). At the 

farm, go on the trail to the left, which avoids a 

big curve, and reach the Carroufra intersection 

(means “the broken rock”). 

Take the small road on the right, below the 

Lauzes (‘place strewn with flat stones’) til the La 

Vachère farm. Start along, on the left, the path 

which becomes a trail, then turn right and go 

back up the Mayaud valley on the left. Reach the plateau, see the Jas-d'Esprit cross (631 m). 

Take the logging road to the right. 

At La Plaine (632 m; to the southwest, the La Pouraque farms, "asphodèle", unless this refers to a type of well, the 

posaraca or wheel wells'), go on the logging path on the right, and reach the Trois-Luisants intersection (661 m; 

means the "shiny rocks"). 

Take the path on the right, which narrows then swings right, goes down, and crosses a pebbly scree, and reaches 

the Saint Gens spring and oratory. 

Behind the oratory a ridge path leads to a cross, with a good view, 20 min r-t. 

Continue going down and reach the Combe de la Fontaine. 

Go down the road to Saint Gens.

MALAUCÈNE/MONT VENTOUX

Halfway up the road which goes from the town of Malaucène to the 

top, this hike near the preserved zones gives great views of the north 

and south sides of Mont Ventoux.

Start: route du Mont 

Ventoux point stop 

Description: Start from the "Belvédère" (1 km east of the Ramayettes gite). 

From the lookout point at 965 m you have great views of the Alazards valley, the Plate, Comte pass, the Ouvèze 

river valley and the Rhône valley, and the Dentelles de Montmirail. Go up 100 m along the side of the road, then 

take a trail on the left (if you look back, great view over the Comtat plains). This leads to the D974 at the Rams. 

Cross the road, take the path slightly below, then the trail to the left. It goes back up to the road. Follow it on the 

right for 300 m. Just before the big parking lot at Prés-de-Michel (1,144 m), take the logging road on the right. At 

first it is horizontal, then it starts climbing. After 200 m, go up the steep part on the left. Go along the road on the 

right for 70 m, then go up on the right side path 150 m. Take the horizontal path on the right, continue on the 

path then again on a trail for 40 m. In the curve, go down on the path on the right, into dense undergrowth. As 

you come out, vast panorama over the Dentelles de Montmirail and the plain. Continue until you reach "collet 

Rouge" (1,045 m). Follow the path on the right which winds then dips on the right into the Malaval combe. When 

you reach the bottom of the combe continue down to the Rocher-du-Midi crossroads (771 m). 

Go up on the right on a stony path. At the top, near the "Tete des Mines", turn right and go up to the road, just 

before the Ramayettes forestry gite. Continue on the right for 300 m, til the Ramayettes curve. 

Take the trail to the left, which leads back to the lookout point.

DÉFENDS WOODS 

This was the reserve of the reigning lord - and it was forbidden to let the animals graze here - for the 

best wood in the kingdom was logged to from these forests to build the royal fleet under Colbert.

Description: Leave from the Défends horse track in Sault. 

From the horse track, take the pebbly road in the north-west direction (view over Mont Ventoux), go past Le 

Défends (804 m; from the Provença word "Grand Devens" which means "woods whose use is covered by law, and 

forbidden to cattle"). Continue on the path to the Roumane intersection (805 m; from the first name Roman). 

Follow a stony path on the right, go by the La Rouyère intersection (816 m; from the word "roièra" which means 

"white oak forest") and reach Mougne pass (826 m). Go along the path to the right. Take the first path on the right, 

go 200 m, follow the trail on the left 80 m and reach the Défends cave (816 m). Continue straight on, then take the 

wide road on the right to the Loutar-du-Loup intersection (809 m; means "place where the wolf sleeps"). 

Take the path on the left and come to the D 950, at the Hermitage. Cross the road, then go along it on the left, to 

take the first path on your right. It makes a wide loope and reaches the Curni ravine (762 m). Go on your left, on a 

dirt road which is flat at first then rises and reaches the "Trou de l'Eimine" (793 m; a big hole on the left which is a 

filled-in cave. The émine is a former agricultural measure which was approximately 900 m2). 

Continue on in the same direction and go along the stony path in the Pourraches woods (751 m. The "porracha" is 

the "asphodèle" (or daffodil), unless this refers to a type of well, called a "posaraca" or wheel well. Go down the 

road, cross the talweg (shooting range on the right) and 200 m back up the trail to Mougne (776 m). 

Continue in the same direction, cross the D 950 and return to the starting point.

MONIEUX/MONT VENTOUX 

THE CONQUE VERTE

Start from: St-Hubert farm in 

Monieux 

An itinerary full of contrasts, with sweeping views, downhills into 

hidden valleys, and a farm-hamlet where time seems to have stood 

still. 

Description: Starting from the Saint- 

Hubert farm: 

Go south on the road 100 m. At the curve, 

go to the right and go straight up to the Pas 

du Viguier - the beginning of the Mur de la 

Peste (Plague wall). 

Go down on the right into fairly dense 

underbrush. As you come out, great view of 

Mont Ventoux, the Dentelles de Montmirail 

and the Comtat plain. Continue the descent 

which can be rocky at spots. Stay on the 

widest trail. At the base of the slope, slant to 

the right to reach the D 5. Cross it. 70 m 

further, curve to the right and stay on the 

main path which winds down into the vale. 

At the crossroads between the Vautorte 

combe on the left, and the Conque-Verte valley on the right, go up the Conque Verte valley at the back, 

amidst dense vegetation. The uphill grows steeper - there is a wall on the right. Stay on the big path which 

curves to the left, then to the right, then rises. 

At the T-shaped crossroads, (there is a sign on the protection of the biotope in the Nesque river canyons), 

take the path on the right. It dips to the left, goes along a drystone wall, crosses the valley, curves then clibms 

to the Barbéris hamlet. 

This is an animal-raising area, please be quiet and discreet. 

Take the path into the hamlet on the right, go up slightly at first, then nearly horizontally. As face the stele, 

Saint-Hubert can be seen above the treetops. Take the direction south, and the trial reaches a fork. Continue 

straight, at the wooden cross leave the trail, which goes to the right and take the narrow path slightly offset

DUREFORT TOWER 

Hiking through a valley, a true oasis of tranquility, you will come to 

the highlands at 1,000 m altitude, where crops are grown. Immense 

panorama over the Sault area. 

Distance: 8.5 km 


Lasts: 2 hours 50 

Marking: white - red and yellow 

Start from: St-Jean de Durefort 

Description: Leave from the hamlet of Saint-Jean-de-Durefort 

Hike 40 m into Saint-Jean, then, at the intersection on the "Abeille-Assoiffée" square, go on the left, on the "rue de la 

Pétanque" which turns into a stony path which leads to the chapel (fountain). Go to the south on the D 230, along the 

left shoulder, and go past "Les Courtois" to the end of the hamlet. 

Go on the left 100m, in the direction of the Jas, then go to the right on the grassy path lined with trees. 

Continue 300 m on this small road. As you enter a curve, go to the right on the path which goes up the 

Combe-Crau ravine. When the trail swings to the right, stay in the same direction on the path which grows 

narrower, then distances itself from the bottom of the thalweg. It is very shady, and reaches an intersection. 

Goo 200m on the path to the right. Take the small road which goes to Champ-Long on the left. Go past the 

intersection and go up facing the Quatre-Chemins. 

Follow the path to the left (north), amid vast fields of fodder, cereals and lavender; overlooking Mont Ventoux, the 

Albion plateau, Ferrassières (26),Saint-Trinit (84), Revest-du-Bion (04), Lure mountain and the Préalpes du Sud). 

Continuer straight, in front of the La Peine farm, swing to the left. 

Leave the path to the right and continue straight. Pass the La Tour farm on the left, and come to a fork: 

400 m northwest, past the peak, (1 027 m), view over the Durefort area on the highlands. 

Keep to the southwest direction following the path in the middle of the grass. After a flat period, the downhill 

begins, (view of Saint-Jean, Monieux, Mont Ventoux, the Sault area). Then grows steeper. Again, take the road to 

reach Saint-Jean.

most often on small asphalt roads with very little 

traffic, and small paths. 

Leave from: Place de la Coconnière in Visan.

Description: From the square, take the D20 in the direction of Vaison la Romaine (D20). Be careful - 

this is a road which can have traffic. Continue until you leave the village. At the "La Plantade" crossroads, 

go on the right on a small asphalt road, in the direction of Monnier. Nice view of the vineyards, uphill on 

the tarred road. At a crossroads, turn left and follow the tarred road, go past a farm. Turn left to pass in 

front of the farm. The road ends and turns into a path which you take until you hit the D20. Lovely path 

which goes along vineyards and woods. Beautiful view over Mont Ventoux. At the stop sign when you 

reach the D20, go opposite on the small tarred road (sign says Combauche) in the direction of Ruisseau du 

Cubert. From there, the marking also indicates the mountain biking circuit. Go to the right in the direction 

of Cubert Haut until you cross the asphalt road which comes from Saint Maurice - be careful, on this part, 

the mountain-biking circuit goes to the left at point 335, do not take this but continue on straight, following 

the yellow markings. At the tarred road, at the Cubert Haut sign, go left toward Charpene. At this sign, go 

left slightly below on the right, go right on the trail which goes into a small pine woods. Follow this train 

which takes you to a dirt path then to a tarred road which goes down. Arrive at the crossroads where there 

is a crucifix on the right. Go left in the direction of the top of the village to see the ruins of the Château du 

Marot (orientation tables at the top of the hill). Go back down to Place de la Coconnière along the narrow 

streets.

For the competent rider who can handle his 

horse in the countryside, the Vaucluse offers 

endless possibilities of wonderful rides 

through a vast network of marked bridle 

paths. This network provides several long 

trails through the entire department of the 

Vaucluse with access to many important 

sights of interest. Along these itineraries, you 

find stage lodging, where both rider and 

horse receive a comfortable welcome and all 

the equipment and services they require. For 

novice riders, there are many riding centres 

offering half and full day trail rides 

throughout the region accompanied by 

skilled, professional instructors. Some riding 

centres offer classes, pony-clubs, and cart 

rides. Check with the CDTE 84 for further 

information.

The limestone cliffs off Provence are deservedly famous 

among rock climbers. The quality, variety, and the range 

of challenges, the secure equipment and the good climate, 

conducive to climbing all year long, all make the Vaucluse 

a preferred destination for lovers of this vertical sport. In 

the heart of the Luberon, the site of Buoux is known the 

world over, and well-appreciated by climbers. The 

Dentelles de Montmirail range, the “four-season” site, has 

been climbed since the 1940’s. There are many other sites 

which add to the choice, don’t hesitate to contact the 

FFME County board for more information. 

HOWEVER ! 

if you climb on rocks which have not 

been approved for rock-climbing – be 

very careful with the flora and fauna 

you find there. They are protected 

species, and must be left in peace…

the River Sorgue and its canals all provide a wealth of fishing 

areas. There are 2900 kilometres of riverbank, ranked in 

the 2nd piscicultural category, as well as quiet fishing holes

Winter sports are a pleasure at the resorts on Mont Ventoux, whose peak reaches 1912 meters. 

Snowfall is somewhat inconsistent, but can be plentiful. You can downhill ski, snowboard, (at the 

Mont Serein snowpark), snowshoe, and cross-country ski in the woods. 

Once springtime arrives, Mont Serein ski resort offers a wide range of sports and play activities

Careful ! Spelunking can be a risky sport, and entering caves, swallow-holes, pits and

THE LUBERON 

REGIONAL NATURAL PARK 

BIOSPHERE RESERVE 

The Luberon mountain range lies at the junction between the Alpine and Mediterranean climatic influences. 

The Luberon peaks at Mourre Nègre (1,125 meters) and stretches from the city of Cavaillon in the 

Vaucluse, to Villeneuve in the Alpes de Haute-Provence. 

The 166,000 hectares in the Luberon range make up an outstanding natural and cultural heritage, yet the 

Luberon is also a living and working region with over 150,000 inhabitants. 

The Regional Natural Park, which celebrated its 25th anniversary in February 2002, has the objective of 

protecting and enhancing this natural heritage, while preserving the living conditions of its inhabitants, 

promoting social and economic development, welcoming visitors and raising awareness to the importance 

of environmental protection. In December 1997, the Luberon was officially ranked as part of the World 

Biosphere Reserve by the United Nations Education, Science and Culture Organisation (UNESCO). 

The Luberon Regional Natural Parks has an information 

center, 

LA MAISON DU PARC, IN APT 

to guide you throughout the Luberon, and help you 

discover its outstanding natural beauty, human interest 

and splendid landscapes. In the historical center 

of the city of Apt, this information center displays 

permanent exhibitions on the environment, geology 

and paleontology, habitat, and perched villages, with 

interactive displays, slide shows and video projections. 

There are also temporary exhibitions, and a 

gift shop. The center is open from Monday to 

Saturday, from 8:30 a.m. to 12 noon, and from 1:30 

p.m. to 7:00 p.m. (Between October and April, the 

center closes at 6:00 p.m., and is closed on Saturday 

afternoon). 

NATURE AND HERITAGE DISCOVERY TRAILS 

Easy access paths, for one to two-hour strolls on 

marked paths, with information signposts along the 

way: The Cedar Forest in the lesser Luberon, the 

Ochre Sands in Roussillon, the Terraced Fields in 

Goult, Saint-Jacques Hill in Cavaillon, the ornithological 

observatory in Mérindol. 

DISCOVERY BOOKS AND DOCUMENTS 

The Park publishes or co-publishes documents to 

inform and teach the public about the wealth – and 

fragility – of its cultural and natural heritage. “Ocres”, 

“La faune du Luberon”, “La flore du Luberon”, 

“Bories”, “Le Luberon des insects”, “Le Parc naturel 

régional du Luberon à pied” (hiking maps from the 

FFRP), “Luberon, Parc naturel regional” (a Gallimard 

guide), “Découverte géologique du Luberon”, a 

geological guide and map at 1:100 000 (BRGM), etc. 

THE CYCLING MAP “LE LUBERON EN VÉLO” 

Cavaillon, Apt, Forcalquier, Manosque, Lourmarin, 

Cavaillon (235 km). Cycling along small, picturesque 

country roads, with very little car traffic. This itinerary 

crosses some of the most beautiful countryside 

and outstanding villages in the Park. No need for 

other maps, for at each intersection there are colored 

signs providing useful and interesting information. 

“PANDA” GITES 

Recognised by the WWF (World Wildlife Fund), 

there are 17 such gites in the Luberon Park. They 

meet very strict criteria. They are located in superb 

natural settings and have environmentally aware 

owners who have provided them with observation 

equipment and literature to enable visitors to best 

enjoy the nature of the park.
