Overcoming great obstacles, the Sports Car Club of British Columbia (SCCBC)
loss of the Westwood circuit 4 years ago SCCBC began the search for a replacement
road racing course. After more years and hours than anyone within SCCBC wants to
"Your mission should you choose to
accept it is to race on a very demanding track
in 1 00+ degree weather and not pass out As
always your brakes will self destruct in 20
minutes. Good luck Mr. Phelps."
ICSCC's first look at Mission was very positive
and the drivers spoke very highly of the effort to
restore Conference racing in Canada. For those who
didn 1 t make it, the track is very twisty and not very kind
to those who choose to fall off. The paddock area still
needs some help, but we are racing again in Canada
and I hope to see some more new faces next race.
We had a couple of protests (see letters), a disqualification
for excessive speed in the paddock and an
underweight disqualification. We also had a number of
problems with tech to deal with. Remember to look at
your gear carefully, new eyes can spot things the other
guys might have missed.
During my driver 1 S meeting instructions I told the
drivers to be very careful with the brakes and to save
the car until the end. The smart drivers did. Most of
the drivers who had brake problems handled it well, a
couple did bone head stuff. Remember, if you know
you are having a problem and you don 1 t back out, you
are dangerous. We have a rule that deals with dangerous
driving. Don 1 t push it over the edge.
I'll see you all in Portland. Maybe I'll get the grey
dust out of my nose and the Fraiser River slime from
between my toes ... nose toes ... sounds like a song in
there somewhere.
Bob Habermann
ICSCC Race Steward.
768 C/W v 75 C/W
Protest Violation of 1517
Dangerous Driving
Gentlemen,
As you are both aware this protest was filed in
response to body contact between car 75 and 768 at
Mission. The result of this contact was that car 768
spun and crashed heavily into the barrier, with car 75
aole to continue. It has been the procedure of this
steward to rule on the trigger of the event without
regard to the result of the incident and I will follow this
guideline here.
I have listened to both drivers stories and interviewed
two witness drivers. It is my finding that car
768 had an erratic exit from tum 6 leading onto the
straight. Car 75 attempted a pass on driver 1 S left but
was cut off. he then tried driver 1 S right. It is at this
point it is not clear who hit who. My judgement is that
the driver of car 75 (Scott Olson) was unable to
determine which line 768 (Martin Muebrer) was going
to take and got into a blind spot with a low car. I do
not feel the facts support a charge of dangerous driving
and I will forward the protest fee to Conference.
I would remind both drivers of rule 1504 which
shares responsibility for safe passes and I will be paying
close attention for repeat problems.
Sincerely,
Bob Habermann
ICSCC Race Steward
77 C/W v 357 C/W
Mechanical Protest
Gentlemen,
This protest involves the use of 14 inch diameter
wheels on cars competing in the RX7 class. Since
1308, which gives specific exceptions for this class,
requires compliance with production car rules, section
14 must be followed in it 1 s entirety.
1308A2 states that 13B engines are not allowed.
1403 requires that if a component is used from a
version of a car, all equipment unique to that version
must be used. Since information provided to me
indicated that the 14 inch wheels in question were from
a model or version that was only available with a 13B
engine, and since the 13B engine is expressly not
allowed, these wheels fail to comply with ICSCC
regulations.
I find for 77 C/W and will return the protest fee.
The penalty for the violation will be disqualification
from the race and loss of any points earned at this race.
I would like to commend both parties for a high level
of sportsmanship and conduct during my investigation.
Sincerely,
Bob Habermann
ICSCC Race Steward.
