CHAPTER 1<br />

GENERAL<br />

1. Purpose <strong>and</strong> Scope<br />

Section I. INTRODUCTION<br />

a. This manual provides guidance on the tactical employment<br />

of the rifle company of the infantry, <strong>and</strong> airborne division battle<br />

groups; <strong>and</strong> the rifle company of nondivisional battle groups.<br />

b. The tactics, techniques, <strong>and</strong> procedures described are for<br />

guidance, <strong>and</strong> should not be considered as inflexible rules. Comm<strong>and</strong>ers<br />

should modify them as required by the varying conditions<br />

of the battlefield.<br />

c. The material in this manual is applicable to nuclear <strong>and</strong> nonnuclear<br />

warfare.<br />

d. The manual has been prepared using the rifle company of the<br />

infantry division battle group as the basic rifle company organization.<br />

When this manual is used in conjunction with other rifle<br />

company organizations, appropriate adjustment must be made.<br />

It should always be remembered, however, that regardless of its<br />

TOE assignment, every rifle company must retain the ability to<br />

capitalize on the most appropriate form of mobility for each<br />

mission.<br />

e. Users of this manual are encouraged to submit recommended<br />

changes or comments to improve the manual. Comments should<br />

be keyed to the specific page, paragraph, <strong>and</strong> line of the text in<br />

which the change is recommended. Reasons should be provided<br />

for each comment to ensure underst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>and</strong> complete evaluation.<br />

Comments should be forwarded direct to the Comm<strong>and</strong>ant,<br />

United States Army <strong>Infantry</strong> School, Fort Benning, Ga.<br />

2. Mission<br />

a. The mission of the rifle company of the infantry battle group<br />

is to close with the enemy by means of fire <strong>and</strong> maneuver in order<br />

to destroy or capture him, or to repel his assault by fire, close<br />

combat, <strong>and</strong> counterattack.<br />
