d. Packaged rations are generally used during the assault<br />

phase of the operation. Rations are usually issued once daily;<br />

they are distributed during the night preceding the day of use.<br />

When the company mess is operating in the airhead, it is controlled<br />

<strong>and</strong> operated as described in paragraph 31.<br />

Section IV. MISCELLANEOUS LOGISTICAL ACTIVITIES<br />

39. Medical Service<br />

a. Within the infantry battle group, one company aid man<br />

from the battle group medical platoon is normally attached to the<br />

company to give emergency medical treatment. This basic medical<br />

support is usually supplemented by one or more two-man emergency<br />

medical treatment evacuation teams, each equipped with a<br />

frontline ambulance. Operating mounted or dismounted as the<br />

tactical situation dictates, these teams treat, collect, <strong>and</strong> evacuate<br />

patients within <strong>and</strong> from the company positions. Walking<br />

wounded are directed to an aid post operated by the company aid<br />

man or to the battle group aid station. The company comm<strong>and</strong>er<br />

designates litter bearers or unit vehicles to supplement attached<br />

or supporting medical evacuation means as required.<br />

b. Within the airborne battle group, four company aid men<br />

from the battle group medical platoon are normally attached to<br />

the company to give emergency medical treatment. The company<br />

comm<strong>and</strong>er usually has one of the attached aid men accompany<br />

each rifle platoon. Walking wounded are directed to a battle<br />

group aid station. Other patients are evacuated to an aid station<br />

by an ambulances of the medical platoon or by litter bearers or<br />

vehicles designated by the company comm<strong>and</strong>er to supplement<br />

supporting medical evacuation means.<br />

40. Maintenance <strong>and</strong> Repair<br />

a. Proper maintenance of all equipment <strong>and</strong> supplies is essential<br />

to the combat efficiency of the company. Comm<strong>and</strong> supervision<br />

of maintenance is m<strong>and</strong>atory. The company comm<strong>and</strong>er<br />

assures that all equipment is serviceable <strong>and</strong> in the best possible<br />

condition.<br />

b. Within the rifle company, the maintenance capability is generally<br />

limited to that which can be accomplished by the individual<br />
