Welcome to the 2013 Colonial First State
Platform Adviser Briefing
Good afternoon,
Thank you for attending our briefing today and for your continued support of
Colonial First State’s platforms, FirstChoice and FirstWrap.
I recently joined Colonial First State in the role of General Manager, Marketing and
Distribution, and I’m excited to be a part of a company that consistently leads the
market in service, innovation and efficiency. My main goal in this role is to focus on how
customer preferences and needs are changing, and to deliver platform and business
solutions to support you and your clients through these changes.
Our platforms continue to go from strength to strength. As at December 2012 our
platforms had a combined market share of $70 billion and I’m proud to say we’ve been
recognised with a number of awards over the past year, including being rated 1st and
2nd for overall satisfaction in the 2013 Wealth Insights Service Level Survey. We have
some upcoming enhancements to our platforms to tell you about today, which I hope
you’ll find as exciting as I do.
The theme of our briefing today is Driving efficiency. There are several reasons why
we felt this theme was pertinent. Firstly, we know one of the key drivers for success
in a financial advice practice is being able to provide your clients with comprehensive,
quality service without sacrificing business profitability. We feel it’s our role as a
platform provider to help you remove any unnecessary administration burden so you can
service your clients more efficiently. You’ll hear about some of the efficiency tools we’ve
developed for you in our briefing today.
Secondly, we’re entering a new era of transparency and compliance with the introduction
of various regulatory reforms and while that presents a number of challenges, there
are also some significant opportunities. We’ve been hard at work over the past year
developing platform solutions to help you to accommodate the new obligations under
the reforms. We’ll also discuss these solutions with you today.
We’re excited to be joined at our briefing by Anton Tagliaferro from Investors Mutual and
Phil Kearns from Centric Wealth. I’m looking forward to hearing their views on how change
can be a catalyst for driving new efficiencies and bringing forward opportunities.
On a personal note, I’m looking forward to meeting as many of you as possible today
and hearing your views on how we can continue to assist you to drive efficiencies in
your business.
How investing in the Australian share market
has changed over the past 25 years
Anton Tagliaferro
Investment Director, Investors Mutual Limited
An in-depth look into how investing in the Australian share market has
changed over the past 25 years and future opportunities that exist.
Anton commenced his professional career with Deloittes in London where he qualified
as a Chartered Accountant and has more than 25 years’ experience in the financial
services industry.
Highlights of Anton’s career include managing Australian equity portfolios for Perpetual,
County NatWest Investment Management and BNP Investment Management. During this
time, all of Anton’s portfolios achieved significant and consistent outperformance.
In 1998, Anton established Investors Mutual Limited (IML), a specialist Australian
equities fund manager with a conservative investment style and long-term focus.
IML today manages Australian equity portfolios worth more than $4 billion on behalf
of a wide range of Australian investors, superannuation funds and clients of financial
planning groups.
IML won the Fund Manager of the Year award for Australian equities in 2002, 2003 and
2011 and has been nominated again for 2012. Anton has also been also featured in
a book to be published in Europe later this year titled The best 99 investment managers
in the world where he is one of only two Australian equities managers featured.

Building efficiency through execution excellence
Phil Kearns
CEO, Centric Wealth
Phil will share his insights into how change can be a catalyst for driving
new efficiencies, both on and off the field, and will talk about how
partnering with Colonial First State is helping to grow his business.
Phil commenced as CEO of Centric Wealth in December 2011. In his time at Centric
Wealth, Phil has reinvigorated the culture and refocussed the business on sales and
client retention. Prior to joining Centric Wealth, Phil worked at Investec Bank from 2005,
where he worked within the Private Bank before moving to a Managing Director role
within Investec’s Corporate Advisory and Capital Markets divisions.
Phil is well known for his successful rugby career where he represented Australia 67
times, was captain on ten occasions and was a member of Australia’s Rugby World
Cup-winning teams of 1991 and 1999. Phil is one of only six players to be twice
involved in a Rugby World Cup-winning side. Phil remains connected to rugby through
his commentating role with Fox Sports.
A committed philanthropist, Phil is a director of the Children’s Cancer Institute Australia
and an ambassador for the Humpty Dumpty Foundation through which he founded the
annual Balmoral Burn, a charity which has raised $15 million to purchase vital medical
equipment for over 200 children’s hospitals and health service centres across Australia.
Phil has an Arts Degree majoring in Economics and Economic History from the
University of NSW, a Diploma of Applied Finance and is a Graduate of the Institute
of Company Directors.
