Although cuirass negative pressure devices had
advantages over the tank in that they were easy to
use, were less cumbersome (whilst still covering the
chest and abdomen) and actually improved venous
return, there were severe disadvantages using this
method as:
• This method could not provide adequate tidal
volume or minute ventilation
• Could still not use higher pressures or frequencies
as still relied on passive recoil
• Therefore this method was by definition only an
augmenting type of ventilation
