External High Frequency Ventilation for Weaning from Mechanical Ventilation

"We present three cases in which the Hayek Oscillator was used in weaning patients who became dependent on
C.M.V. and difficult to wean. Reventilation could be achieved within seconds, without the need for intubation and
without hazard to the patient. Therefore, using the Hayek Oscillator, arrest of ventilation was easily decided on. A
further advantage was a spontaneous mucus expulsion, each time the Hayek Oscillator was applied. External
ventilation allowed easy and early weaning. Hazards of reintubation [were] eliminated and the period of
ventilation and hospitalization reduced. The technique is noninvasive, well tolerated and costs less."
