8 The Lone Star Lady • March–June 2010 We have all heard about the magnificent Phantom III and its V-12 engine. The P III went into production in 1936 and ended in 1939 with the outbreak of WW II. 719 examples were produced.
The P III used a newly designed 7.34 liter, 60 degree V-12 engine with overhead valves. This style of engine was developed by Rolls-Royce in the early 30s as an aircraft engine. This was the famous Merlin engine used in the Spitfires and later in the US P-51 Mustangs. Rolls-Royce produced a V-12 for the P III to remain in competition with the other luxury brands that were producing cars with V-12s and V- 16s. Pete tells me that much of the malfunction of this engine was due to plugged oil flow passages and corroded water flow passages. A lesson for us all. Keep the oil in your engine fresh and maintain your cooling water’s chemistry. Sneed Adams Pete Smirnis in Houston is undertaking the restoration of a P III V-12 engine. Posted here are a few photos.
