96 LSU Health Sciences Center at Shreveport School of Medicine
Education and the mission of the CME Program is to provide new
information that will update current skills, provide state of the art
technological training, and/or acquisition of new and innovative
skills in the physician’s area of expertise and/or practice specialty.
The primary audience for these efforts is the practicing physician
community in the Ark-la-Tex geographic area, but not necessarily
limited to this area. Educational opportunities range from a number
of symposia, both regional and nationally, to audiovisual materials
available by loan to individual physicians.
PATIENT SERVICES
In keeping with the mission of the LSU System, involving the
“development of the highest levels of intellectual and professional
endeavor in programs of instruction, research, and service,” the
Health Sciences Center operates patient clinics staffed by full-time
faculty members, with expertise in the complete range of specialties
in the health sciences, offering services to other health professionals
and the general public, on a fee for service basis. For further details
regarding such patient services offered by the School of Medicine in
Shreveport, call: (318) 675-5408.
COMBINED M.D. and Ph.D.
DEGREE PROGRAMS
LSUHSC SHREVEPORT SCHOOL OF
MEDICINE AND SCHOOL OF GRADUATE
STUDIES
The combined M.D./Ph.D. program is an option for a limited
number of students with superior academic records and unusual
research potential. In the course of the program, a student will pursue
the medical curriculum for two years, spend three to four years as a
graduate student to acquire the Ph.D., and finally spend two years
completing the medical curriculum. Prospective students must first
apply to and be accepted to the medical school. When applying, they
should state their desire to enter the M.D./Ph.D. program. Criteria for
consideration of admission are: MCAT scores of 28; GPA 3.5 (on
a 4.0 scale); and GRE combined Verbal, Quantitative and Analytical
score of at least 1800. The GRE is required. Students must maintain
a B average or the equivalent, during the entire program. Students
must fulfill all the requirements of the Doctor of medicine and the
Doctor of Philosophy degrees.
If a student withdraws from either the M.D. or Ph.D. portion of the
program the student is required to reimburse all tuition and fees paid
or waived.
An integrated program leading to both degrees is offered jointly by
the schools of Medicine and Graduate Studies. Applicants must apply
to and be admitted by both schools and by the M.D.-Ph.D. Committee,
which oversees the program. Students take the first two years of
medical school and must pass Step-1 of the USMLE, then enroll as
graduate students in the basic science department to which they were
admitted. Once all requirements for the Ph.D. have been met, the
student completes years three and four of medical school. Applicants
should apply through AMCAS in the usual way for admission to the
medical school, and should contact the Associate Dean for Graduate
Studies at the Health Sciences Center in Shreveport for more details.
LSUHSC SCHOOL OF MEDICINE
