SCHOOL OF MEDICINE IN SHREVEPORT<br />
Mission and Goals<br />
The mission of the <strong>School</strong> of <strong>Medicine</strong> in Shreveport is to improve the health and health care of Louisiana residents.<br />
The <strong>School</strong> of <strong>Medicine</strong> in Shreveport accomplishes its mission through the training of competent, ethical physicians, by<br />
serving as a focus for teaching and research in the health sciences, and by delivering quality health care to Louisiana<br />
residents.<br />
Professional education is a continuum that extends from undergraduate school through internship and residency.<br />
Students at all of these levels of training are included within the mission of the <strong>Medical</strong> Center and its individual <strong>School</strong>s.<br />
Goals of the <strong>School</strong> of <strong>Medicine</strong> in Shreveport in support of its mission are:<br />
1. To provide a high quality program of instruction, student experience, and the example of faculty members in<br />
classrooms, laboratories, clinics, and in affiliated hospitals, all to foster ethical attitudes and develop competence<br />
in highly motivated students.<br />
2. To develop physicians who will retain and enhance their concern for the patient as a person, for the patient’s family,<br />
and for the well being of the community.<br />
3. To serve residents of the State of Louisiana and the Ark-La-Tex region as a hub of medical care.<br />
4. To develop and present appropriate continuing medical education programs to physicians and health-care personnel<br />
in this region.<br />
5. To develop and foster both clinical and basic health science research in pursuit of new scientific knowledge to<br />
meet human needs.<br />

ADMISSION<br />
Committee on Admissions<br />
Responsibility for selection of entering students is delegated<br />
by the faculty to the Committee on Admissions. The Committee will<br />
select from among the applicants those considered to possess in<br />
highest degree those intellectual and personal attributes necessary<br />
for success in the study and practice of medicine.<br />
The <strong>School</strong> of <strong>Medicine</strong> participates in the program designated<br />
as the American <strong>Medical</strong> College Application Service, referred to as<br />
AMCAS. All applications for admission to the first-year class must<br />
be submitted through this service. The application process for this<br />
<strong>School</strong> of <strong>Medicine</strong> is divided into two stages. The first stage is of<br />
preliminary nature and handled by AMCAS. The second stage is an<br />
exclusive relationship between the <strong>School</strong> and those applicants who<br />
have completed Stage-1.<br />
Stage-1<br />
The initial application through AMCAS is available exclusively<br />
through the web site of the American Association of <strong>Medical</strong> Colleges’<br />
web page: www.aamc.org. Students are encouraged to begin their<br />
applications early. All questions about the initial application must<br />
be addressed to the AAMC because <strong>LSUHSC</strong> has no additional<br />
information about this process.<br />
Stage-2<br />
All Louisiana applicants are sent a Stage-2 application when the<br />
medical school receives a verified Stage-1 application from AMCAS.<br />
The Stage-2 is brief and asks for certain supplemental information.<br />
REQUIREMENTS<br />
Attendance for at least three full academic years at a regionally<br />
accredited college, and completion of not less than 90 semester hours<br />
prior to the date of registration at the <strong>School</strong> of <strong>Medicine</strong>. Applications<br />
may be made prior to the completion of the minimum requirements.<br />
Other qualifications being equal, preference will be given to applicants<br />
who will have received the bachelor’s degree prior to registration. B.S.<br />
and B.A. degrees are equally acceptable.<br />

Only applicants who can meet the school’s Technical Standards (see<br />
below) will be considered.<br />
Selection of College Courses<br />
Aside from required courses it is recommended that prospective<br />
applicants pursue their own particular interests and develop their own<br />
special talents. A broad educational background is desirable. The
