5. DISCUSSION<br />
In this section, a further discussion on the changes in productivity in teak<br />
plantations is made. As profitability depends on productivity, the discussion is<br />
limited to productivity.<br />
5.1 Changes in productivity<br />
For studying the changes in productivity in a crop which takes more than 50<br />
years to mature, it is ideal to get the yield data from the same area in<br />
successive rotations. As this is not currently available, using cross-sectional<br />
data an attempt has been made here to look at the changes in productivity<br />
over time. Table 5.1 shows the distribution of area of teak plantations<br />
according to year of planting in Nilambur Divisions classified in different site<br />
qualities based on' actual yields. Plantations are grouped at five year intends<br />
based on the year of planting sequentially and the mean site quality based on<br />
vield obtained is shown as a percentage.
