NEWS FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK
Joy Neale-May, Editor
Inside this issue:
Dear Herberich Families,
I can’t believe that I am writing my final “Herberich Happenings” article. Everyone has had
so much fun and learned so many things this school year that we needed one extra day of
school! The Herberich family is very special. The staff works so hard with all of the students
and we are thankful for your help at home.
As the fourth graders prepare to move on please remember you are always a member of
the Herberich family. We hope you will come back to your Herberich home for a visit!
The theme for our fourth grade recognition ceremony on Thursday, June 9 th at 10:45 is
“Celebration!” The fourth graders are so excited to “celebrate good times” and get to the
middle school but selfishly we would like to keep each and every fourth grader here.
Two members of our Herberich family will be retiring at the end of this year. Mrs. Deering,
speech language therapist and Miss Sheppard, guidance counselor have been valued
members of the Copley-Fairlawn City Schools for many years. They will be missed but I
know they look forward to learning new things in new places!
If you have questions about next year… a letter will be mailed home to all elementary
students at the beginning of August with your child’s classroom/teacher assignment and
the bus route, this also includes kindergarten placements.
Thank You! Thank You! 7 & 13
The end of a school year is always filled with excitement, anticipation and new journeys
for everyone. Whether it is moving to a new classroom, school, state or country my hope is
that the memories from this past school year will give you the confidence and positive outlook
for the next learning adventure. Don’t forget that your Herberich family is always here
for you!
Finally, this summer you can always contact me by e-mail if you have any questions,
suggestions or exciting news. I recognize how fortunate I am to
be at Herberich and words could never express my gratitude.
Have a wonderful summer!
Respectful, Responsible, Courteous and Kind
During May we recognized the following students in our weekly drawings for
Herberich’s unique rewards program, “I saw you being … Respectful, Responsible,
Courteous and Kind”.
Alex Ash, Gabe Ash, Dan Bartlett, Kylie Boyd, Karl Brozeit, Noelle Cole, Adi
Desai (twice), Makenzie Dijak, Neeka Hajjafar, Gavin Hill, Heaven Jackson, Emma
Kello, Susie Kleines, Michael Manos, Sarah Masuoka, Selena Murphy, Abby
Owen, Hannah Potts, Logan Price, Nick Manos, Allie Poundstone, Dustin
Pudlowski, Brendon Roddy, Caleb Scott, Camron Shaw, Rachel Siddall, Rawney
The students were recognized over morning announcements and invited to
choose a reward from Miss Ashcroft’s prize drawers.
All students, preschool through fourth grade are eligible for this awards recognition
Congratulations!
April Student of the Month
Mrs. Lisa Headley wrote:
Patricia was chosen for Student of the Month
because of her positive attitude and work ethic.
Patricia works very hard in class to complete each
assignment and always checks her work. She is
always willing to volunteer during her recess to
help her peers and teachers. She has worked as a
table washer in the cafeteria and as a helper to
Mrs. Deering. She also substitutes for students
who cannot help on their designated days. She is
a positive role model for our class because she is
always respectful and courteous.
Patricia likes to swim, write stories and play school in her spare time. She
looks up to her grandmother because she always gives the right answer and
protects her. Her favorite subject in school is writing. Her favorite things
about Herberich are her friends and teachers. Patricia wants to be a teacher
when she grows up because teaching is fun.
I am very proud to have Patricia Porter represent Herberich Primary School
for Student of the Month.
Congratulations Patricia!
SHOES: We only have ten days
of school left. Please encourage
your children to wear shoes suitable
for running on the playground.
There have been a large number of
twisted ankles, falls on the black
top and mishaps on the climbing
equipment—the majority of the
children affected have being
wearing flimsy sandals, flip flops or
crocs. Thanks for helping us keep
our students safe.
THANK YOU: I would like to
personally thank our parents,
teachers and staff for all their kind
help and support this past school
year. Special thanks are due to
several people: Romi Brozeit for
her encouragement and knowledge;
to Romi’s team who provided my
family with hot meals; to our nurse,
Rita Baker who took care of the
sick kids so that I was not exposed
to too many germs, and to Miss
Ashcroft who did it when the nurse
was not around. I am truly blessed
to be part of the Herberich family.
Enjoy the summer!
During spring cleaning or over the summer, think about what books you haven’t read in a while. Those
books need a new home where they would be read by hundreds of Herberich children!
Our school loves books; all kinds of books! So, while you’re spring cleaning, just cleaning out the closet or
shopping at garage sales, think about how those books could use a new home here at Herberich Primary School.
Our children would benefit from new books in our 100 Book Challenge bins!
If you would like to donate any of your new or used books, please drop them off at school, and we
will find them a happy home in our classrooms and in our library!
Thank you to all who have donated books to our school.
CLINIC CHATTER—Mrs. Rita Baker, RN
Summer means cycling.
One of the best ways for kids to learn about safe biking is for parents to set a good
example by going on bike rides with them and show them what safe bike riding
looks like! Follow the rules of the road and always wear a helmet yourself.
Wearing a bike helmet should never be an option. No matter where you are or how short a ride you are going on.
You may wonder why? Well, most bike accidents involve a head injury that can be severe. Each year in the
United States, about half a million kids are seriously injured in bicycle-related accidents, and most of those
injuries could have been avoided if a helmet was worn. To protect against head injuries, make sure your kids
wear a correctly fitting helmet on every ride.
A bike helmet fits well if it:
Sits level on the head
Isn’t tilted forward or backward
Has strong wide straps that fit snugly under the skin
Is tight enough that after fastening, no sudden pulling to twisting can move it
around
Bike riding is a great way to stay active as a family and get valuable together time.
ART PALETTE—Mrs. Kathy Wooley
What a wonderful year!
Thanks to all of my volunteers, from 3 rd and 4 th grade
grandparents, to kindergarten moms and special aunts!
I could not have done it without you.
The month of May was filled with great lessons. Kindergarteners
learned about motion (marbles) and wind powered
art. They huffed and puffed and created art using straws. First
graders have been busy with Van Gogh, self-portraits, and kites. The
second grade finished their study of Seaurat, the father of pointillism,
with a dinosaur design. Third grade artisans continued their study of
optical illusions with a powerful 3D lesson. They are also creating
stained glass art with a circus theme. Pop-up art and a Miro inspired
work are the final two projects for our fourth graders.
I hope you all have a wonderful art filled summer!
MISS SHEPPARD SAYS GOODBYE WITH A SMILE
After 35 years of service Miss Sheppard is retiring. Herberich students
and staff want to say how much they admired her dedication
over the years. It really is impossible to measure what Miss Sheppard
has meant and what an impact she has made on the lives of
her students.
Miss Sheppard hopes that her greatest gifts to her students are the
skills that they will draw upon as they remember the lessons she has
taught them. For example, the peer mediation which she initiated
at the elementary level. She has taught them. She has touched so
many lives with her dedication to the counseling profession.
Miss Sheppard has been an outstanding educator for the Copley-
Fairlawn City School District, and will be truly missed, but know she
will now be able to pursue some of her favorite hobbies such as hiking
and traveling.
Good Luck, best of health and happiness to you,
PRESIDENT—Mrs. Christine Hohenshil
Oh my goodness, the past two years have certainly flown by..... It's hard to believe we
finally are seeing a few sunny days and have less than 2 weeks of school left!
The past month has been another whirlwind of activity at Herberich. 3rd and 4th graders
had perfect attendance for their Ohio Achievement Assessments in April. PTA supported
them by providing a healthy snack and water each morning before the test. Then we helped
celebrate by providing a pizza party and snacks for each of the classes after the tests
The first week of May was staff appreciation. Once again, Deanna Matthies did an outstanding
job of providing food, treats and raffles for our staff and teachers. Herberich also took a
morning to provide treats for the Bus Drivers. It is very gratifying to show our appreciation
to these special people in our children's lives
Next was Muffins for Moms. Many, many thanks to the dads who stepped up so that the
Moms could enjoy the breakfast. Thanks to Mark Elicker, Dale Sroka, Brian Kello, James
Canode, Blake Matthies and Dave Hohenshil.
And of course, there are several fun events planned for the last two weeks of school: Field
Day, Relay for Life and 4th grade graduation!!!!
Thanks to all the families who sent in used batteries for the battery recycling drive and gently
-used books for the book drive. Keep them both coming in....
This is a very exciting yet wistful time of year for those of us who are graduating students
from 4th grade into Middle School. And, not only is Herberich graduating a great group of
4th graders but we are also losing some wonderful longtime volunteers:
Deanna Matthies, Staff Appreciation chairperson extraordinaire!!!
Phyllis Bernel, room grandparent, Gingerbread Shop coordinator, concert set decorator
Mark Elicker, Market Day volunteer
Laurie Gamauf, Library Volunteer Coordinator
We appreciate all your efforts on behalf of the students of Herberich and wish you well as
your children move on to Middle School!!!
I too am wistful as I wrap up the school year and work on the transition to incoming PTA
president Romi Brozeit. Before I sign off on my LAST president's article EVER, I would
like to take a few moments to express my tremendous appreciation for all the help and support I have received over the past 2
years. Herberich has an unbelievable group of teachers, staff and parents who work together to teach our children. I have been so
blessed to be a part of this community. We've laughed, we've cried (sometimes at the same time!!!), we've been there for each other &
most important, we've managed to both learn and have fun!!!!
So, many many thanks to Miss Ashcroft, ALL the teachers and staff, Mrs. Kerr, Mrs. Brennan, Mr. Smiraldo, Mr. Kerr, Mr. Cuigini,
Mrs. Walton, Mrs. Wooley, Mr. Witschey, Mrs. Long-Rice, Ms. Sheppard, Mrs. Vanke, Mrs. Hanhold, Mrs. McMaster, Miss Kimberlin,
Mrs. Van Horn, Romi, Kim, Marji, Renae, Marie, Anita, Danae, Lital, Nancy, Beth, Rich, Julie, Charles, Mark, Joelle, Deanna, Blake,
Phyllis, Laurie, Laura, Sue, Stacy, Rita, Deidre, Diane, Tracy, Kelly, Patricia, Yukiko, Dale and all those I'm forgetting to mention. A
special special thanks to Mrs. Neale-May for her seemingly endless patience with me and her cheerful, tireless work on behalf of the
students of Herberich. Its been a privilege and a pleasure to work with all of you!!! I hope you all enjoy a well-deserved rest over the
summer!!!!!
Best of luck to Romi and the rest of the Herberich PTA Executive Board as you plan for the upcoming year. I know it will be fantastic!!!!
Peace
Christine

Knitting Club Donates Blankets
to Summit County Children Services
Tuesday, May 24 representatives from the fall and spring knitting club presented
Mrs. Julia Mothersbaugh of Summit County Children Services with two blankets
they knitted this year. The group voted to have the blankets donated to the Visitors
Center of Children Services where over 700 children visit per year. There children
will experience the love from Herberich children as they take comfort with the
blankets. Each knitter contributed their own knitted square which was then crocheted
into a blanket by instructor Mrs. Allison Chrien. The blankets were beautiful.
Herberich is very proud of our knitters for working together to create these
blankets and then choose to give them to others in challenging circumstances.
Knitters this fall and spring included: Emma Canode, Kiara Cobb, Lindsay Cotleur,
Ava Duluc, Sayaka Eguchi, Lauren Elicker, Erin Elliott, Alexis Heap, Marinna Hill, Allison Hohenshil, Amanda Hohenshil, Katya
Itibrout, Susie Kleines, Luna Kobayashi, Chance Marks, Erin Matthies, Paige Myers, Hannah Parker, Emily Reese, Ava Serge, Georgie
Shinn, Colleen Sroka, Mea’nah Witherspoon and Stella Won.
Thanks thanks thanks for your support of Herberich's fundraisers!!!!
Our Box tops collections have raised over $2200.
Market Day raised over $3000.
The Chuck E Cheese night raised $350.
We still have one SCRIP order to go … help us record $1000 from that fundraiser.
These funds allowed us to make a donation to purchase additional baskets of books for 100 book challenge. They
also paid for Staff Appreciation events, 3rd & 4th grade snacks and pizza parties for Ohio Achievement Assessment
week, Muffins for Moms, snacks for Relay for Life and Field Day and 4th grade graduation cupcakes. We will be
planning a special school event to thank all the students for their help in collecting box tops. Even if you are not
able to volunteer much, participating in fundraisers is a great way to show your support for Herberich!!!!
SCRIP—Mrs. Laura Poundstone
Summer is upon us already and we are so close to having raised $1000 with the SCRIP program. Help us get there by placing a
final order this year. If every family buys just one $10 card, we will generate a huge profit.
Stock up on sunscreen at area drugstores like Rite-Aid and Walgreens.
Gas cards can be used for road trips and away ballgames.
Old Navy, Macy's & Childrens Place cards are available for summer outfits and swimwear.
Stock up on Giant Eagle cards to earn fuelperks all summer.
Thank you to all the families who have placed an order this year!
Special Thanks to the Daniels, Hartz-Rudolphs, Farrens, Parkers, Seagrens & Miss Kimberlin
who consistently planned for Scrip!
