A.S.K. Research Unit<br />

1 Summary<br />

The Research Unit <strong>Advanced</strong> e-<strong>Services</strong> <strong>for</strong> the Knowledge Society (ASK) was founded by Prof.<br />

Demetrios G. Sampson, Senior Researcher at ITI-CERTH <strong>and</strong> Assistant Professor on eLearning at the<br />

Department of Technology <strong>Education</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Digital</strong> <strong>Systems</strong> of the University of Piraeus, on January<br />

2000.<br />

It is one of the main research units of the In<strong>for</strong>matics <strong>and</strong> Telematics Institute (ITI). ITI was<br />

founded in 1998 as a non-profit research organization under the auspices of the General Secretariat<br />

<strong>for</strong> Research <strong>and</strong> Technology of the Greek Ministry of Development, with its head office located in<br />

Thessaloniki, Greece. Since March 2000, ITI is one of the four founding members of the Centre <strong>for</strong><br />

Research <strong>and</strong> Technology Hellas (CERTH).<br />

ASK is an interdisciplinary unit engaged in research <strong>and</strong> development in Technology Enhanced<br />

Learning <strong>and</strong> Semantic <strong>and</strong> Context-based Knowledge <strong>Systems</strong>. ASK’s activities involve applied<br />

research, design <strong>and</strong> development of e-services <strong>for</strong> the knowledge society, as well as, technology<br />

transfer, consulting <strong>and</strong> education.<br />

The main achievements of the ASK Research Unit can be summarised as follows:<br />

• Participation in 30 R&D projects (11 EC funded Projects, 10 National Projects, 9 Industrial<br />

Contracts) attracting total external funding at the range of 3.8 Million Euro with 7 running<br />

projects <strong>and</strong> 23 successfully completed.<br />

• Active participation in European <strong>and</strong> International Centers of Excellency such as CEN/ISSS<br />

Learning Technologies Workshop, IEEE Learning Technologies Technical Committee <strong>and</strong> the IMS<br />

Global Learning Consortium, Inc.<br />

• More than 135 scientific publications in book chapters, journals <strong>and</strong> conference proceedings with<br />

at least 200 citations.<br />
