I.T.I. – C.E.R.T.H. A.S.K. Research Unit Annex Centre for Research and Technology Hellas The Centre for Research and Technology Hellas (C.E.R.T.H.) is a non-profit, private-law legal entity operating under the auspices of the General Secreteriat for Research and Technology of the Greek Ministry of Development. It was founded in March 2000. Its mission is to carry out basic and applied research with emphasis in exploiting research results and developing innovative products and services with industrial, economic and social added value. CERTH’s Head Offices are located in Thessaloniki, the second largest city of Greece. It is housed in its own 10.500 m 2 building facilities at the Thessaloniki Technological Park (TTP) in Thermi, a town 12 km from the city center of Thessaloniki developing towards the technopolis of South Greece. CERTH has office also in Athens and Kozani. CERTH’s organizational structure includes, the Central Directorate and five Research Institutes, namely: • Chemical Process Engineering Researsh Institute – CPERI (Founded in 1985) • Informatics and Telematics Institute - ITI (Founded in 1998) • Hellenic Institute of Transport - HIT (Founded in 2000) • Institute for Agrobiotechnology - INA (Founded in 2000) • Institute for Solid Fuel Technology and Application – ISFTA (Founded 2002) The strategic goal of CERTH is to become Center of Excellence in scientific and technological areas with a competitive advantage in Greece and Southeastern Europe, capitalizing on the know-how and the high expertise of its main researchers. Key fields of competencies are: • Petroleum refining catalyst evaluation, Fuels quality control, Optimization and control of polymer production process, Analysis of enviromental samples, Sampling and characterization of gas emission from fixed or mobile pollution sources. • Semantic and Context-based Knowledge Systems, Technology-enhanced Access to Learning and Culture, Smart Organisations and Networked Business and Government, Personalised and Preventive Health Systems, 3G Mobile and Wireless Systems, Applications and Services for the Mobile User, Advanced Systems for Audiovisual Content Creation and Delivery • General improvement in plants, Testing on genetically modified plants, Standardization and molecular testing of goods and beverages, Application of molecular diagnostic technology in organisms and their products. • Vehicle technology and impact assessment of land, maritime, air, and multimodal transport services in Greece. • Studies on the promotion of Clean Coal Technologies, By-products utilization and coutilization of lignite with biomass or/and wastes, Gas pollutants measurements and promotion of environmental friendly Technologies, Fuel characterization and on-line coal quality monitoring and control , Control and monitoring of ground water level and quality MARCH 2007
I.T.I. – C.E.R.T.H. A.S.K. Research Unit CERTH’s total annual turnover is 11,8 MEuro (2001). It employs about 350 employees from various sectors. Currently, CERTH participates in 250 Research and Technology Projects and Industrial Contracts with total budget of 42 MEuro. The total expected income of CERTH for the next five years is more than 100 MEuro. MARCH 2007
