Helping Hands
“Kindness in words creates confidence. Kindness in thinking creates
profoundness. Kindness in giving creates love.” Lao Tzu
For my family, the end of summer means lots
of pool time, firefly hunting, ice cream cones
and last minute excursions to our favorite
local places. It is not until the beginning of
August that we generally start to buckle down
and get focused on school. My kids love their
trips to Target, checking off their lists to make
sure that they have everything they need and stuffing their backpacks
full of supplies.
One thing that is generally not on my
mind in July is school supplies - for
my children or others. The School
Supply Drive to benefit the Fort Mill
Care Center kicks off in early July
and is over by August 1 - typically
when people first start thinking about
supplies! The Fort Mill Care Center
helps hundreds of needy families in
our community and begins distributing backpacks and supplies by
August 1. It is a challenging timeframe for many of us. Helping Hands
was asked by the Care Center to provide 50 backpacks for needy high
schoolers. This is a group that is typically underserved in terms of
school supplies but is often the neediest demographic.
We kicked off our School Supply Drive on July 15th and
planned our Backpack Stuffing Day for July 28th. We
decorated and put out our bins. We stuffed flyers into
mailboxes. We tweeted and facebooked. We sent out
emails with shameless pleas for supplies. We received
a very generous donation of backpacks from The Palm
Gifts and from a local Baxter resident, enough to meet
our goal. All we needed were supplies. Three days
before our event most of us had only cobwebs in our
bins instead of paper and pens.
But then, in true Baxter fashion, the supplies came
flooding in! It was truly an amazing success. Volunteers showed up for
our Backpack Stuffing Day. We were able to stuff 82 backpacks along
with an additional 16 bags of school supplies ready for backpacks.
This is almost double what we provided last year! Additionally we
provide 3 huge boxes of extra supplies to the Fort Mill Care Center.
Thank you to everyone who donated, assembled and collected
supplies. It was a great success and those backpacks are a blessing
to so many young people in our community.
