Then this is the club for you! The Baxter Bow Wows is a social club designed for adults and their furry children to have some fun in the sun while enjoying dog friendly activities. Join us to “Unleash Your Beast” at Tega K9’s Training and Daycare facility here in Fort Mill. We will have off leash play time in the fenced outdoor area for our pups between 10am - 12pm on Saturday, September 15th. Feel free to stay the entire time or just drop by when you can. a v e s a n d r e v i e w s Tish Bialecki Resident Columnist Where does the time go? Summer is gone and we are back to school already. I hope you enjoyed some fun times and made a summer scrapbook of your memories. I use a site called Shutterfly to make mine. I am not computer savvy and this site is easy to navigate. Sign up and take advantage of the discounts they offer. You can make gifts such as calendars, mugs, t-shirts and more. Great ideas for holiday gift giving. I like to make a photo book of our vacations. We joined the YAHA group for a trip to Columbia. You must take a ride and spend the day there. It’s only a little more than an hour away . The Columbia Museum of Art, The Ed Venture Childrens Museum, and the South Carolina State Museum are just some of the places to visit. We went to see the Titanic Artifact Exhibition. The state museum is the only museum in the southeast to host this exhibit. The museum itself is an old mill. There are many other things to see there. The one I was most interested in was the Civil War. This exhibit will be done in phases over a four year period and is very impressive. If you have a student studying the Civil War this is a must see. Columbia is a great family outing. Besides the museums there is the State House and the Zoo. There is no shortage of places to eat. This time we lunched at Motor Supply Company. This restaurant has won many awards and was top notch. If you are planning lunch get there early or for dinner I would recommend a reservation. Speaking of award winning restaurants, one of my faves right here in Fort Mill just was awarded Four Diamonds by AAA - Passion 8 Bistro. It looks a little iffy from the outside and a bit eclectic inside BUT the food is what you go for. The menu changes seasonally so you are never bored. They feature an upscale menu and use many local ingredients in their dishes. By the time you read this the hoopla from all the political conventions will be over and you can start planning some uptown events. The symphony, opera and the Blumenthal theater all have their fall programs listed. Don’t forget to check out the local colleges for theater and musical events including CPCC and Winthrop University. The fall brings a slew of fairs and festivals. Greenville, SC. has their annual food fest called Euphoria September 20- 23 and the South Carolina State Fair is October 10 -21. The Yiasou Greek Festival takes place in Charlotte September 13-16. This is their 35th year. With the crowds I saw last year they must be doing something right. Go early because it gets pretty crowded. Check your Sunday paper for other events. With Halloween right around the corner there are hayrides, corn mazes and of course the scare fest at Carowinds. A fun night uptown is the Haunted History Tour. Charlotte has some pretty dark tales. The fall is also a great time to sign up and take some classes. Johnson and Wales has some unique culinary experiences on Saturday mornings. CPCC has a variety of classes to choose from. Improve your golf game , learn how to bake artisan breads and even strengthen your core muscles with a Belly Dance class. There are so many opportunities to learn something new. And don’t forget the library. There are always events going on there for all ages. By now you know I am always looking for new places to dine. A cute place in Pineville is Two On Earth Bakery & Cafe. A cute little place for lunch that features freshly made salads, panini, quiches and baked goods. They open at 7am and serve breakfast. Their baked goods vary from day to day and offer both sweet and savory scones. Yum! After you fill your tummy walk around Main Street and browse the antique shops. A shop right next door is Z Furnishings. They offer many locally made items and it’s a fun place to poke around. The owner is an upbeat guy who enjoys showing you around the shop. This place has some unique accessories to boot and some items can be custom made. Well I hope you have some new ideas to try. Until next month Explore and Enjoy! Queen Ashlee Mathey, Resident Columnist of Green As a child, my birthday celebrations were typically small, primarily family, gatherings. My mom would bake and decorate a cake; there were a few balloons, and several humble gifts. Though I am not one to complain about any size event in which I am the focus, I often secretly wished for an extravagant revelry celebrating my fabulous existence! Because I desired a lavish birthday party growing up, I now feel the need to host them for my children! (Totally for them, not me, of course!) This month my oldest son will be three and his first two bashes were magnificent, pricey, imaginative, and completely environmentally irresponsible! This year I am throwing my inhabitot’s first green birthday party and I am determined to make it even more ingenious than his previous two! Obviously, a cyber invitation is best, but it just doesn’t feel right if I can’t put it in a scrapbook! Because Tytus’ party is a jungle/zoo theme, how better to announce it than on requests printed on elephant poo paper! www.poopoopaper.com It saves trees and uses a sustainable material that has few uses. As a mother, I do not want the focus of my child’s celebration to be on his gifts. Instead of presents, this year we are asking that attendants bring a contribution for Tytus’ charity jar. After his party, Ty’s offerings will enable him to become an “endangered species carousel sponsor” at the Riverbanks Zoo in Columbia, SC. He will be able to visit the zoo all year, ride the endangered species merry-go-round, and see his name on a plaque above his circling animal! My hope is that he will feel proud to have helped, and possibly saved, an endangered species because of his third-year life celebration! I shutter to think about the masses of wasteful and harmful decorations I have purchased in the past, just to toss after a few hours of use! This year, live plants will fill the house to give it a “jungle” feel. I ordered several paper panda shaped balloons from www.amazon.com and a Nature Sounds Meditation CD will play in the background. Ideally, everyday dishes would be used and washed afterwards. My column is called Queen of Green, not The Greenest Queen! Gatherings are already so much work, why add dish washing to the chore list! However, I did purchase sustainable bamboo plates and utensils that can be pitched after one use. They are sturdy, organic, biodegradable… and jungle chic! You can find them at most Earth Fare or World Market stores. (No worries, cloth napkins will be used and presented as animal origami on the table!) I am making a vegan chocolate cake and will serve fun, healthy fruits and veggies that resemble animals. If it looks fun, kids usually eat and adore it! Play with Your Food by Joost Elffers offers phenomenal menu ideas with easy directions! What is a party without a favor? Typically these goodie bags are made of paper and filled with unhealthy candy and cheap plastic toys that are chucked before getting out of the (hybrid) car. So not green! Ty’s guests will each take home a reusable tote adorned with their names. During his gala, the kids will each create a sock monkey to drop in their personalized sacks. Also, inside each individualized carrier will be a wooden animal puzzle and a ticket to the Riverbanks Zoo so T’s guests may visit and ride the carousel animal they helped Tytus to sponsor. Parents will also be given one of the live, leafy party décor plants to take home. It may seem as though an eco party alternative may cost more “green,” but it truly does not. The tricks are to not invite every Stephanie, Kevin and their brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, and cousins; do not make so much food that the leftovers will not fit in your fridge afterwards; and be selective with your planning. (Spend more on what you feel is most important, weather that be favors, decorations, or entertainment.) Challenge yourself to keep your tot’s next hoorah simple, eco, and fun!
