Campus Buzz 3
With the college still swathed in the aura of
autonomy, the past few weeks witnessed a lot of
activity as the fresh MALAVIYANS made their way
amidst the crowd towards a gleaming future. The
month celebrated Teacher’s Day which witnessed
expression of respect and gratitude towards the
honorable teachers. Tremendous pride made way as MALAVIYAN ACE, the
aptitude test series conducted by the board, achieved greater heights by
becoming online this year, through a web portal designed by college alumni.
The campus placements for the academic session are round the corner with
the final year indulged in rigorous preparations. Companies like TCS and
WIPRO are on their way to tap the unparalleled Malaviyan genius. Besides
this, there is much excitement and buzz in the college regarding the upcoming
Tech fest and Alumni convention, scheduled to be held on the 29 th , 30th and
31 st of October.
Also our institution is accredited with the Quality Improvement Program
which will bestow us with the well deserved up gradation, along with four
fields of research; this will render us as the only college of Uttar Pradesh to
have attained the same.
COLLOQUY
“A teacher affects eternity, he can never tell where his influence stops.”
-Henry Brooks Adams
Teachers play a pivotal role in our lives. On the occasion of Teacher’s Day, the Head of Mechanical
Engineering Department, Dr. A.K. Bajpai has a special message to give to us all...
prestigious college?
Ques- Sir, how would you describe
your journey as a teacher in this
Ans- Excellent!!! My journey in this college as a teacher has
been a wonderful and enriching one, full of diverse
experiences. Since 2001, I have been an active member of
CMS (Centre of Management Studies) and then, in 2010, I was
appointed as the Head of the Mechanical Engineering
department. I hope that my professional odyssey shall prove
to be the guiding steps to my students.
Ques- As the Head of Mechanical Engg. Department, how do
you aim at recuperating the problems? And what all
improvements would you like to bring?
Ans- We all have realized the motley problems of the
department and are taking steps to eradicate them. Slight
shortage of faculty members and under-equipped labs and
workshops are some of the flaws that subsist, but are being
looked into. Moreover, in the coming years, we would like to
run part–time programs at both the Undergraduate and
Postgraduate level. Production and Industrial Engineering,
being my field of interest, I would also like to promote new
courses in this area.
Ques-What are your views on autonomy and how do you
think it shall be beneficial to the department?
Ans- Autonomy means freedom. And of course, our college is
now a self-determining institution on attaining this status. It
has given us the liberty to design our own syllabus, keeping
the current demand of the industry in mind; for B-Tech as well
as M-Tech programs. We shall have our own yearly calendar
and power to set our own question paper, which shall be
evaluated in our college itself. Therefore, there wouldn’t be
any erratic results.
Ques- Now ‘Quality Improvement Program’ has been implemented.
So how do see it as an asset to the department?
Ans– Yes, of course, Quality Improvement Program will
surely prove to be a boon for both, teachers and students.
They would be provided with well equipped labs, space,
funds and twenty-four hour teachers’ assistance; hence, on a
whole a conducive environment to carry out their research
work without any bounds. We do agree that it would require
a lot of groundwork but we assure that in the long run it
would add to the glory of Malaviya.
Ques- It is the general belief amongst the students, that
Mechanical Engineering Department is one of the best in
this institution. What would you like to say about this?
Ans- Well, on this, I have just two things to say. Firstly, it
depends on others’ outlook to decide what’s the best.
People have different parameters of defining what’s
pre-eminent. Secondly, yes, the department as a whole, tries
to be cooperative with the students. Moreover, we have well
-qualified and experienced faculty which shares a very good
level of synergy with the students.
Ques- So, Sir, Mechanical Engineering being the core
branch, what is the present placement scenario?
Ans- The department, on its part, is doing the foremost.
Twenty-four hours help is being provided. The T&P (Training
and Placement Cell) is always kept updated with all the
current and relevant information required. In addition to
this, autonomy shall pave path for more core companies to
come and pick our talented students. Hence, let us hope for
the best!
Ques- Sir, on the eve of Teacher’s Day, what message
would you like to give to the students as well as teachers?
Ans- I wish all the best to all my colleagues and all my
ex– and present students!!! On the occasion of teacher’s
day, I would say that technology is just a tool– in terms of
getting the kids working together and motivating them, the
TEACHER is the most important.
“A literary genius, it is said, resembles all, though no one resembles him."
Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan
Teachers’ Day is a special day not just for the students but for teachers as well. Teachers’ Day is widely celebrated in
India with great enthusiasm and joy. But few people know about its history and about the person after whom this
day came into light. Let us shed some light over it-
Born in a poor Niyogi brahmin family on the 5 th of September, 1888 in Tamil Nadu, Dr. Radhakrishnan was a genius by birth. He was a brilliant
student and received scholarships throughout his academic life. He graduated from Madras Christian College at the mere age of 17. His
M.A. thesis on "The Ethics of the Vedanta and its Metaphysical Presuppositions" was published when he was just twenty. He was married to
Sivakami at the age of 16 and had 5 daughters and a son.
Taking up the post of the principal in Harris Manchester College, Oxford in 1929 (where he was known as Spalding professor of the Eastern
Religions and Ethics), he was subsequently knighted by George V in 1931 for his innumerable services to education. He however did not use
the title in personal life. He succeeded Pt. Madan Mohan Malaviya as the Vice Chancellor of the B.H.U. and served till 1948.
Radhakrishnan represented India at UNESCO (1946-52) and was later Ambassador Of India to the Soviet Union from 1949-52. Dr.
Radhakrishnan became the first Vice President of India. He was later elected as the President of India in 1962 succeeding Dr. Rajendra
Prasad.
He was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature for 5 consecutive years (1933-37). He was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1954 and the
Order of Merit in 1963. Radhakrishnan was awarded the Peace Prize of German Book Trade in 1961 and the Templeton Prize in1975.
Once some of his friends and students requested him to celebrate his birthday, 5 September, he replied
"Instead of celebrating my birthday, it would be my proud privilege if 5 September is observed as Teachers' Day."
Since then, his birthday is being celebrated as Teachers’ Day in India.
HAPPY TEACHERS DAY!!!
ENTERING THE ERA OF BIOCHIPS
Computer chip manufacturers are furiously racing to make the next microprocessor
that will topple speed records. Sooner or later, though, this competition is
bound to hit a wall, microprocessors made of silicon will eventually reach their
limits of speed and miniaturization. Millions of natural supercomputers exist inside
living organisms, including homo sapiens. DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) molecules,
the material our genes are made of, have the potential to perform calculations
many times faster than the world's most powerful human-built computers. DNA
might one day be integrated into a computer chip to create a so-called biochip that
will push computers even faster. DNA molecules have already been harnessed to
perform complex mathematical problems. In fact, DNA is very similar to a computer
hard drive in how it stores permanent information about your genes.
Adleman, a renowned computer scientist introduced the idea of using DNA to
solve complex mathematical problems such as the directed Hamilton Path problem,
also known as the "traveling salesman" problem. The goal of the problem is to
find the shortest route between a number of cities, going through each city only
once. Adding more cities makes the problem more tedious and cumbersome.
Adleman rose above all and solved the problem using DNA. The goal of the DNA
computing field is to create a device that can work independent of human involvement.
The most recent breakthrough is the development of logic gates made of DNA.
Logic gates are a vital part of computer which carry out functions that you command
it to do. These gates convert binary code moving through the computer into
a series of signals that the computer uses to perform operations. Currently, logic
gates interpret input signals from silicon transistors, and convert those signals into
an output signal that allows the computer to perform complex functions.
The DNA logic gates are the first step toward creating a computer that has a structure
similar to that of an electronic PC. Instead of using electrical signals to perform
logical operations, these DNA logic gates rely on DNA code. They detect fragments
of genetic material as input, splice together these fragments and form a
single output. For instance, a genetic gate called the "And gate" links two DNA
inputs by chemically binding them so they're locked in an end-to-end structure,
similar to the way two Legos might be fastened by a third Lego between them. The
researchers believe that these logic gates might be combined with DNA microchips
to create a breakthrough in DNA computing.
While still in their infancy, DNA computers will be capable of storing billions of
times more data than your personal computers. Its computational potential would
be harnessed to build workable DNA computers.
