During <strong>the</strong> period <strong>of</strong> October 18-22, 2010,<br />

<strong>Kasetsart</strong> <strong>University</strong> delegation compr<strong>is</strong>ed 6<br />

members paid an <strong>of</strong>ficial v<strong>is</strong>it to universities<br />

and agencies in P. R. China. The group included:<br />

During <strong>the</strong>ir first two days in Beijing,<br />

October 18 and 19, <strong>the</strong> delegates paid a v<strong>is</strong>it<br />

to <strong>the</strong> Agricultural Development Bank <strong>of</strong><br />

China where <strong>the</strong>y were warmly welcomed by<br />

Mr. Zheng Hui, President, who had a very<br />

fruitful d<strong>is</strong>cussion with all delegates while<br />

Luncheon Reception was also hosted in<br />

honor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> delegation. After that <strong>the</strong><br />

delegation proceeded to China Agricultural<br />

<strong>University</strong> to meet with Mr. Qu Zhenyuan,<br />

Chairman, China Agricultural <strong>University</strong><br />

Council and o<strong>the</strong>r admin<strong>is</strong>trative members<br />

including Vice president and Director <strong>of</strong><br />

International Relations Office. In th<strong>is</strong><br />

respective university, <strong>the</strong> d<strong>is</strong>cussion was<br />

emphasized on <strong>the</strong> academic cooperation<br />

between two universities since 1992 as well<br />

as <strong>the</strong> future collaboration to be focused<br />

on Exchange <strong>of</strong> Academic and Supporting<br />

Staff and Students, Joint Research, <strong>the</strong><br />

fellowship for KU members to pursue<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir advanced studies in P. R. China and<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r activities based on <strong>the</strong> mutual<br />

interest. In th<strong>is</strong> connection, all in <strong>the</strong><br />

meeting were reminded that Pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />

Dr. Kamphol Adulavidhava, was awarded <strong>the</strong><br />

Honorary Pr<strong>of</strong>essor on <strong>the</strong> occasion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

90 th Anniversary <strong>of</strong> Beijing Agricultural<br />

<strong>University</strong>, before renamed to be China<br />

Agricultural <strong>University</strong>. Moreover, <strong>the</strong><br />

delegation also paid a short v<strong>is</strong>it to CP<br />

Headquarter in Beijing<br />

On October 20, 2010, <strong>the</strong> delegation<br />

<strong>the</strong>n flew to Xiamen to pay a v<strong>is</strong>it to<br />

Huaqiao <strong>University</strong>. On th<strong>is</strong> occasion,<br />

Mr. Zhang Yodong, Vice President warmly<br />

welcomed all delegates with luncheon party<br />

before <strong>the</strong> v<strong>is</strong>it to various units such as <strong>the</strong><br />

main building and laboratories. The delegates<br />

were also informed that President, Huaqiao<br />

<strong>University</strong> would pay an <strong>of</strong>ficial v<strong>is</strong>it to <strong>Thai</strong>land<br />

and had planned to v<strong>is</strong>it <strong>Kasetsart</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />

on November 18, 2010, in <strong>the</strong> afternoon.<br />

Before being back to <strong>Thai</strong>land, <strong>the</strong><br />

delegation stopped over in Shanghai to v<strong>is</strong>it<br />

Shaghai EXPO 2010.<br />

The 1 st Kamphangsaen International<br />

Natural Products Symposium (KINS 2010)<br />

with <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>me “The Relationship between<br />

Living Organ<strong>is</strong>ms and <strong>the</strong> Environment”<br />

was held on October 23-24 in Sw<strong>is</strong>sotel<br />

LeConcorde Hotel, Bangkok, <strong>Thai</strong>land. The<br />

overall objectives <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> conference were<br />

to motivate graduate students and young<br />

scient<strong>is</strong>ts in Natural Products Science and<br />

related fields; to engage in <strong>the</strong> international<br />

collaborative research; to stimulate young<br />

scient<strong>is</strong>ts to meet with <strong>the</strong> authorities<br />

in <strong>the</strong> fields; to allow <strong>the</strong> passing-on <strong>of</strong><br />

research experiences from generation<br />

to generation and to promote Natural<br />

Products Science research activities in<br />

<strong>Thai</strong>land. It was hosted by <strong>the</strong> Research<br />

Promotion and Technology Transfer Center<br />

<strong>of</strong> Faculty <strong>of</strong> Liberal Arts and Science,<br />

Kasersart <strong>University</strong>-Kamphangsaen Campus,<br />

The symposium was attended by approximately<br />

150 participants from various universities, research<br />

institutions and industries from 15 different<br />

countries. The opening ceremony was highlighted<br />

by <strong>the</strong> introductory remarks from <strong>the</strong> symposium<br />

chairman, Assoc. Pr<strong>of</strong>. Dr. Weerachai Phutdhawong;<br />

a welcome remark from Assoc. Pr<strong>of</strong>. Vudtechai<br />

Kapilakanchana, <strong>the</strong> President <strong>of</strong> <strong>Kasetsart</strong> <strong>University</strong>;<br />

and an opening remark from Assoc. Pr<strong>of</strong>. Piniti<br />

Rattananukul, <strong>the</strong> Deputy Secretary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Higher<br />

Education Comm<strong>is</strong>sion in <strong>Thai</strong>land. It was <strong>the</strong>n<br />

followed by interesting and informative lectures<br />

from reputable keynote speakers: Pr<strong>of</strong> Dr. Pichaet<br />

Wiriyachitra <strong>of</strong> Asian Phytoceuticals Public<br />

Company addressed <strong>the</strong> potential <strong>of</strong><br />

natural products from mangosteen in<br />

balancing <strong>the</strong> immune system as well as in<br />

trimming figures. Pr<strong>of</strong>. Stephen G. Pyne<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Wollongong in Australia<br />

d<strong>is</strong>cussed <strong>the</strong> medicinal and agricultural<br />

applications <strong>of</strong> stemona alkaloids.<br />

Dr. Kimberly Colson <strong>of</strong> Bruker Company<br />

reviewed <strong>the</strong> current strategies <strong>of</strong> natural<br />

products <strong>is</strong>olation using NMR spectroscopy.<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>. Dr. T. Randall Lee <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

Houston talked about <strong>the</strong> photo-induced<br />

delivery <strong>of</strong> natural products using gold<br />

nanoparticles. Lastly, Dr. David Harding,<br />

Walailak <strong>University</strong> highlighted <strong>the</strong><br />

functions <strong>of</strong> redox coupled spin crossover<br />

in biological enzymes.<br />

The conference cons<strong>is</strong>ted <strong>of</strong> three<br />

parallel sessions: 1) Natural Products<br />

Chem<strong>is</strong>try; 2) Utilization <strong>of</strong> Natural<br />

Products and 3) The JKTC research group<br />

presentation. There was also a poster session<br />

during <strong>the</strong> first day. Certificates <strong>of</strong> recognition<br />

were also awarded to <strong>the</strong> best oral and poster<br />

presenters, as well as to <strong>the</strong> most popular<br />

poster chosen by <strong>the</strong> viewers. All presenters<br />

also received certificates <strong>of</strong> participation.<br />

The major sponsors <strong>of</strong> th<strong>is</strong> two-day<br />

conference were <strong>Kasetsart</strong> <strong>University</strong>, Asian<br />

Phytoceuticals Public Company Ltd., and<br />

Bruker Co.


Asian NIR Consortium (ANC) was establ<strong>is</strong>hed as a consensus<br />

among participants from China, Japan, Korea and <strong>Thai</strong>land in<br />

June 2006. One <strong>of</strong> specific m<strong>is</strong>sions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> consortium was<br />

to promote transferring <strong>of</strong> knowledge and know-how on<br />

NIRS among Asian countries and arrange <strong>the</strong> Asian NIRS<br />

symposium every two year. Th<strong>is</strong> year 2010, Asia NIR symposium<br />

was held at Shanghai, China from October 16 - 18. Totally,<br />

<strong>the</strong>re were 223 attendants from 10 countries. 16 attendants<br />

were from several universities and government organizations<br />

in <strong>Thai</strong>land. Totally 6 attendants from <strong>Kasetsart</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />

included 2 researchers, 2 lecturers, one master student and<br />

one Ph. D student. 3 oral presentations were conducted<br />

namely “Use <strong>of</strong> Near Infrared Spectroscopy in Combination<br />

with Chemometrics for Quantitative and D<strong>is</strong>criminant<br />

Analyses <strong>of</strong> Turmerics” by Dr. Sumaporn Kasemsumran<br />

The seminar program during October 13 – 15, 2010 featured 2 sessions. First, a lecture on “The<br />

Drivers <strong>of</strong> Knowledge Management” given by Assoc. Pr<strong>of</strong>. Lt. Col. Settapong Mal<strong>is</strong>uwan, Ph.D, Chulachomklao<br />

Royal Military Academy, held at <strong>the</strong> Thira Sutabutra Conference Room, <strong>Kasetsart</strong> <strong>University</strong>-Bang Khen<br />

Campus. A series <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> second session held at Baan Amphawa Resort & Spa, Samutsongkram Province,<br />

cons<strong>is</strong>ted <strong>of</strong> a table d<strong>is</strong>cussion by Mr. Somsakdi Tabtimthong, Director, International Affairs Div<strong>is</strong>ion,<br />

follows by group dynamics and group d<strong>is</strong>cussions.<br />

Field Trip<br />

Moreover, <strong>the</strong> participants went on field trips<br />

to many interesting places at <strong>Kasetsart</strong> <strong>University</strong> –<br />

Kamphaeng Saen Campus in Nakhon Pathom<br />

Province as below.<br />

Mangrove, Samutsongkram Province with various<br />

activities such as boat sightseeing, feeding <strong>the</strong> monkey and mangrove planting.<br />

Th<strong>is</strong> seminar achieved all its goals that <strong>the</strong> participants had shared <strong>the</strong>ir knowledge<br />

and experience while helped streng<strong>the</strong>n personal network among one ano<strong>the</strong>r. Th<strong>is</strong> could<br />

truly encouraged more interaction between members <strong>of</strong> international affairs network.<br />

On October 26, 2010, it was an<br />

seminar on “Improved Utilization <strong>of</strong> F<strong>is</strong>hery<br />

By-Products as Potential Nutraceuticals<br />

and Functional Foods” jointly organized by<br />

Faculty <strong>of</strong> F<strong>is</strong>heries, <strong>Kasetsart</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />

and Food and Fertilizer Technology Center<br />

for <strong>the</strong> Asian and Pacific Region (FFTC),<br />

Taiwan during October 25-29, 2010 at <strong>the</strong><br />

Meeting Room 303, <strong>the</strong> Boon Intarumphun<br />

Building, Faculty <strong>of</strong> F<strong>is</strong>heries, <strong>Kasetsart</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong>. The seminar <strong>is</strong> aimed to promote<br />

exchange <strong>of</strong> knowledge and technology<br />

on <strong>the</strong> said topic. In th<strong>is</strong> connection,<br />

Dr. Jen-Chyuan Lee, Director <strong>of</strong> Food and<br />

Fertilizer Technology Center for <strong>the</strong> Asian<br />

and Pacific Region (FFTC) presided over<br />

<strong>the</strong> Opening Ceremony <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> said seminar with<br />

Ass<strong>is</strong>t. Pr<strong>of</strong>. Dr. Suriyan Tunkijjanukit, Dean <strong>of</strong><br />

Faculty <strong>of</strong> F<strong>is</strong>heries, <strong>Kasetsart</strong> <strong>University</strong> giving<br />

<strong>the</strong> report. The seminar was honored by 14<br />

invited speakers who were experts on <strong>the</strong> said<br />

topic from renowned universities and research<br />

institutions in 9 countries, Taiwan, Japan,<br />

Republic <strong>of</strong> Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia, <strong>the</strong><br />

Philippines, Cambodia, Vietnam, and <strong>Thai</strong>land.<br />

Th<strong>is</strong> seminar ga<strong>the</strong>red participants from<br />

universities, research institutions, government<br />

agencies, and concerned companies nationwide,<br />

altoge<strong>the</strong>r 80 persons. The activities <strong>of</strong> th<strong>is</strong><br />

seminar compr<strong>is</strong>ed academic paper presentations<br />

and v<strong>is</strong>its to Bangkok Aquarium, Department <strong>of</strong><br />

F<strong>is</strong>heries, <strong>Kasetsart</strong> <strong>University</strong> Bangkhen Campus,<br />

and T.C. Union Agrotech Co., Ltd. In addition,<br />

it was an honor that on October 27, 2010<br />

Ass<strong>is</strong>t. Pr<strong>of</strong>. Dr. Suriyan Tunkijjanukij, Dean <strong>of</strong><br />

Faculty <strong>of</strong> F<strong>is</strong>heries, <strong>Kasetsart</strong> <strong>University</strong>, was<br />

<strong>the</strong> chairperson for <strong>the</strong> Closing Ceremony <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> seminar.<br />

<strong>Kasetsart</strong> Golden Jubilee Admin<strong>is</strong>tration and<br />

EXPERTS Kick-<strong>of</strong>f Meeting<br />

in <strong>the</strong> Philippines<br />

During <strong>the</strong> period <strong>of</strong> October 3-6, 2010, Mr. Somsakdi Tabtimthong, Director,<br />

International Affairs Div<strong>is</strong>ion, participated in <strong>the</strong> EXPERT: Exchange by Promoting<br />

Quality Education, Research and Training in South and South-East Asia, at SEARCA,<br />

<strong>the</strong> Philippines. The EXPERTS Meeting <strong>is</strong> a new program under ERASMUS MUNDUS Lot<br />

11 compr<strong>is</strong>ing 20 partners in Asia and Europe and o<strong>the</strong>r 4 associate partners aiming<br />

to streng<strong>the</strong>n academic cooperation and student mobility among all members in <strong>the</strong><br />

following areas: Agricultural Sciences, Architecture, Urban<strong>is</strong>m, Regional Planning,<br />

Engineering, Technology, Geography, Geology, Humanities, Law, Ma<strong>the</strong>matics,<br />

Informatics, Medical Sciences, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences.<br />

International Graduate Student<br />

Orientation Day<br />

On October 11, 2010, <strong>the</strong> Graduate School held<br />

<strong>the</strong> Graduate School Orientation Day for <strong>the</strong> new<br />

international students enrolled in <strong>the</strong> first semester<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> academic year 2010 at <strong>the</strong> meeting room 1,<br />

7 th floor, <strong>the</strong> Graduate School building, Bangkok.<br />

First, Associate Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Dr. Gunjana Theeragool,<br />

Dean <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Graduate School, opened <strong>the</strong> orientation<br />

and welcomed all participants to <strong>the</strong> Graduate School<br />

and gave all participants a chance to introduce<br />

<strong>the</strong>mselves. Later, <strong>the</strong> Dean had Ass<strong>is</strong>tant Pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />

Dr. Nuchanata Mungkung, Deputy Dean for Academic<br />

Affairs, given a presentation on v<strong>is</strong>ions and<br />

objectives, <strong>the</strong> organizational structure, as well<br />

as <strong>the</strong> admin<strong>is</strong>trative team. Dr. Nuchanata fur<strong>the</strong>r<br />

presented some valuable stat<strong>is</strong>tics and charts.<br />

She also elaborated on <strong>the</strong> character<strong>is</strong>tics <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

d<strong>is</strong>tinct programs <strong>of</strong> doctoral degrees, master’s<br />

degrees, and o<strong>the</strong>r diplomas and also focused on <strong>the</strong> Engl<strong>is</strong>h pr<strong>of</strong>iciency examination regulation as<br />

well as <strong>the</strong> transfer <strong>of</strong> TOEFL or IELTS results. The Deputy Dean moreover provided guidance for <strong>the</strong><br />

students on <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir study plan, as to allow students to successfully complete<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir studies within <strong>the</strong> timeframes specified.<br />

Next, she fur<strong>the</strong>r introduced <strong>the</strong> students to <strong>the</strong> Graduate School services, <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>s<strong>is</strong> library,<br />

<strong>the</strong> Engl<strong>is</strong>h editing service, and <strong>the</strong> Student Exchange Program in cooperation with <strong>the</strong> Lou<strong>is</strong>iana<br />

State <strong>University</strong> (LSU). Moreover, she introduced Engl<strong>is</strong>h activities provided by <strong>the</strong> Graduate<br />

school, such as Engl<strong>is</strong>h conversation groups, <strong>the</strong> Engl<strong>is</strong>h Oral Examination Practice for Doctoral<br />

Degree Students, <strong>the</strong> Engl<strong>is</strong>h writing workshops, and <strong>the</strong> Brown Bag Lunch Seminars operated<br />

by an Engl<strong>is</strong>h Editor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Graduate School, Mr. Sandro (Alex) Kunz. Then Dr. Nuchanata invited<br />

questions and <strong>of</strong>fered her ass<strong>is</strong>tance with <strong>is</strong>sues put forward by <strong>the</strong> students.<br />

Finally, all students had a chance to tour all sections <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Graduate School. On <strong>the</strong> ground<br />

floor, <strong>the</strong> students had an opportunity to look at <strong>the</strong> exhibition <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> awarded <strong>the</strong>s<strong>is</strong> and to<br />

familiarize <strong>the</strong>mselves with <strong>the</strong> student service counter as well as <strong>the</strong> queuing system. In addition,<br />

students were given an opportunity to get used to with <strong>the</strong> various forms which <strong>the</strong>y are likely<br />

to encounter during <strong>the</strong> course <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir studies. At <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Orientation Day, students took<br />

a group photo toge<strong>the</strong>r.
