Council in China
During the period of October 18-22, 2010,
Kasetsart University delegation comprised 6
members paid an official visit to universities
and agencies in P. R. China. The group included:

Chairman, Kasetsart University Council

6. Mr. Somsakdi Tabtimthong, Director,
International Affair Division
During their first two days in Beijing,
October 18 and 19, the delegates paid a visit
to the Agricultural Development Bank of
China where they were warmly welcomed by
Mr. Zheng Hui, President, who had a very
fruitful discussion with all delegates while
Luncheon Reception was also hosted in
honor of the delegation. After that the
delegation proceeded to China Agricultural
University to meet with Mr. Qu Zhenyuan,
Chairman, China Agricultural University
Council and other administrative members
including Vice president and Director of
International Relations Office. In this
respective university, the discussion was
emphasized on the academic cooperation
between two universities since 1992 as well
as the future collaboration to be focused
on Exchange of Academic and Supporting
Staff and Students, Joint Research, the
fellowship for KU members to pursue
their advanced studies in P. R. China and
other activities based on the mutual
interest. In this connection, all in the
meeting were reminded that Professor
Dr. Kamphol Adulavidhava, was awarded the
Honorary Professor on the occasion of the
90 th Anniversary of Beijing Agricultural
University, before renamed to be China
Agricultural University. Moreover, the
delegation also paid a short visit to CP
Headquarter in Beijing
On October 20, 2010, the delegation
then flew to Xiamen to pay a visit to
Huaqiao University. On this occasion,
Mr. Zhang Yodong, Vice President warmly
welcomed all delegates with luncheon party
before the visit to various units such as the
main building and laboratories. The delegates
were also informed that President, Huaqiao
University would pay an official visit to Thailand
and had planned to visit Kasetsart University
on November 18, 2010, in the afternoon.
Before being back to Thailand, the
delegation stopped over in Shanghai to visit
Shaghai EXPO 2010.

The First International Natural
Products Symposium
(KINS 2010)
in Thailand
The 1 st Kamphangsaen International
Natural Products Symposium (KINS 2010)
with the theme “The Relationship between
Living Organisms and the Environment”
was held on October 23-24 in Swissotel
LeConcorde Hotel, Bangkok, Thailand. The
overall objectives of the conference were
to motivate graduate students and young
scientists in Natural Products Science and
related fields; to engage in the international
collaborative research; to stimulate young
scientists to meet with the authorities
in the fields; to allow the passing-on of
research experiences from generation
to generation and to promote Natural
Products Science research activities in
Thailand. It was hosted by the Research
Promotion and Technology Transfer Center
of Faculty of Liberal Arts and Science,
Kasersart University-Kamphangsaen Campus,
Symposium chairman, Assoc. Prof, Dr. Weerachai
Phutdhawong (No. 3 from left); Assoc. Prof. Vudtechai
Kapilakanchana, the President of Kasetsart University

the Japan Korea Thailand China Agricultural Science
Research Group (JKTC Group), Academic Service
Center, Kasetsart University at Krabi Province,
Thailand and the Weed Science Society of Thailand.
The symposium was attended by approximately
150 participants from various universities, research
institutions and industries from 15 different
countries. The opening ceremony was highlighted
by the introductory remarks from the symposium
chairman, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Weerachai Phutdhawong;
a welcome remark from Assoc. Prof. Vudtechai
Kapilakanchana, the President of Kasetsart University;
and an opening remark from Assoc. Prof. Piniti
Rattananukul, the Deputy Secretary of the Higher
Education Commission in Thailand. It was then
followed by interesting and informative lectures
from reputable keynote speakers: Prof Dr. Pichaet

Wiriyachitra of Asian Phytoceuticals Public
Company addressed the potential of
natural products from mangosteen in
balancing the immune system as well as in
trimming figures. Prof. Stephen G. Pyne
of University of Wollongong in Australia
discussed the medicinal and agricultural
applications of stemona alkaloids.
Dr. Kimberly Colson of Bruker Company
reviewed the current strategies of natural
products isolation using NMR spectroscopy.
Prof. Dr. T. Randall Lee of the University of
Houston talked about the photo-induced
delivery of natural products using gold
nanoparticles. Lastly, Dr. David Harding,
Walailak University highlighted the
functions of redox coupled spin crossover
in biological enzymes.
The conference consisted of three
parallel sessions: 1) Natural Products
Chemistry; 2) Utilization of Natural
Products and 3) The JKTC research group
presentation. There was also a poster session
during the first day. Certificates of recognition
were also awarded to the best oral and poster
presenters, as well as to the most popular
poster chosen by the viewers. All presenters
also received certificates of participation.
The major sponsors of this two-day
conference were Kasetsart University, Asian
Phytoceuticals Public Company Ltd., and
Bruker Co.

Asian NIR Consortium (ANC) was established as a consensus
among participants from China, Japan, Korea and Thailand in
June 2006. One of specific missions of the consortium was
to promote transferring of knowledge and know-how on
NIRS among Asian countries and arrange the Asian NIRS
symposium every two year. This year 2010, Asia NIR symposium
was held at Shanghai, China from October 16 - 18. Totally,
there were 223 attendants from 10 countries. 16 attendants
were from several universities and government organizations
in Thailand. Totally 6 attendants from Kasetsart University
included 2 researchers, 2 lecturers, one master student and
one Ph. D student. 3 oral presentations were conducted
namely “Use of Near Infrared Spectroscopy in Combination
with Chemometrics for Quantitative and Discriminant
Analyses of Turmerics” by Dr. Sumaporn Kasemsumran
from Kasetsart Agricultural and Agro-Industrial Product

The third Asian NIR symposium (ANS 2012) will be organized by Kasetsart Agricultural
and Agro-Industrial Product Improvement Institute (KAPI) and Asian NIR Consortium
(ANC). It will be held from May 14 – 18, 2012 in Bangkok, Thailand. The chairperson

Group Dynamics
The seminar program during October 13 – 15, 2010 featured 2 sessions. First, a lecture on “The
Drivers of Knowledge Management” given by Assoc. Prof. Lt. Col. Settapong Malisuwan, Ph.D, Chulachomklao
Royal Military Academy, held at the Thira Sutabutra Conference Room, Kasetsart University-Bang Khen
Campus. A series of the second session held at Baan Amphawa Resort & Spa, Samutsongkram Province,
consisted of a table discussion by Mr. Somsakdi Tabtimthong, Director, International Affairs Division,
follows by group dynamics and group discussions.

Moreover, the participants went on field trips
to many interesting places at Kasetsart University –
Kamphaeng Saen Campus in Nakhon Pathom
Province as below.

activities such as boat sightseeing, feeding the monkey and mangrove planting.
This seminar achieved all its goals that the participants had shared their knowledge
and experience while helped strengthen personal network among one another. This could
truly encouraged more interaction between members of international affairs network.

Oral Presentation by KU Member at MBC 2010
International Seminar by KU & FFTC
On October 26, 2010, it was an
honor that Associate Professor Vudtechai
Kapilakanchana, President, Kasetsart
University delivered a welcoming address at
the Opening Ceremony of the international
seminar on “Improved Utilization of Fishery
By-Products as Potential Nutraceuticals
and Functional Foods” jointly organized by
Faculty of Fisheries, Kasetsart University
and Food and Fertilizer Technology Center
for the Asian and Pacific Region (FFTC),
Taiwan during October 25-29, 2010 at the
Meeting Room 303, the Boon Intarumphun
Building, Faculty of Fisheries, Kasetsart
University. The seminar is aimed to promote
exchange of knowledge and technology
on the said topic. In this connection,
Dr. Jen-Chyuan Lee, Director of Food and
Fertilizer Technology Center for the Asian
and Pacific Region (FFTC) presided over
the Opening Ceremony of the said seminar with
Assist. Prof. Dr. Suriyan Tunkijjanukit, Dean of
Faculty of Fisheries, Kasetsart University giving
the report. The seminar was honored by 14
invited speakers who were experts on the said
topic from renowned universities and research
institutions in 9 countries, Taiwan, Japan,
Republic of Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia, the
Philippines, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Thailand.
This seminar gathered participants from
universities, research institutions, government
agencies, and concerned companies nationwide,
altogether 80 persons. The activities of this
seminar comprised academic paper presentations
and visits to Bangkok Aquarium, Department of
Fisheries, Kasetsart University Bangkhen Campus,
and T.C. Union Agrotech Co., Ltd. In addition,
it was an honor that on October 27, 2010
Assist. Prof. Dr. Suriyan Tunkijjanukij, Dean of
Faculty of Fisheries, Kasetsart University, was
the chairperson for the Closing Ceremony of
the seminar.
On this occasion, Associate Professor
Vudtechai Kapilakanchana, President, Kasetsart
University and Dr. Jen-Chyuan Lee, Director of Food
and Fertilizer Technology Center for the Asian and
Pacific Region (FFTC) signed the Memorandum of
Understanding between the two institutions on

and Director of International Affairs Division welcomed, Dr. Rita Sinde, Head of the International
Relations, Office of the University of Porto Business School (EGP-UPBS). On this visit Dr.Rita Sinde
provided information of International MBA, the Magellan, and an Executive MBA, a set of one year
graduate courses, short and mid duration executive programmes, upper management seminars,
in-company training programmes and other business services.

Professor Dr. Kamphol Adulavidhava,
Chairman of Kasetsart University Council,
Dr. Damrong Sripraram, Vice President for Academic Service, as well as administrators and faculty
members of Kasetsart University during their visit to the campus on October 29, 2010. The main
points of discussion related to academic and research cooperation between Kasetsart University
and Hainan Normal University in various activities as follows:

2. Exchange of faculty members for Thai language teaching in Chinese education institutions, and
3. Support for joint activities.

EXPERTS Kick-off Meeting
in the Philippines
During the period of October 3-6, 2010, Mr. Somsakdi Tabtimthong, Director,
International Affairs Division, participated in the EXPERT: Exchange by Promoting
Quality Education, Research and Training in South and South-East Asia, at SEARCA,
the Philippines. The EXPERTS Meeting is a new program under ERASMUS MUNDUS Lot
11 comprising 20 partners in Asia and Europe and other 4 associate partners aiming
to strengthen academic cooperation and student mobility among all members in the
following areas: Agricultural Sciences, Architecture, Urbanism, Regional Planning,
Engineering, Technology, Geography, Geology, Humanities, Law, Mathematics,
Informatics, Medical Sciences, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences.
International Graduate Student
Orientation Day
On October 11, 2010, the Graduate School held
the Graduate School Orientation Day for the new
international students enrolled in the first semester
of the academic year 2010 at the meeting room 1,
7 th floor, the Graduate School building, Bangkok.
First, Associate Professor Dr. Gunjana Theeragool,
Dean of the Graduate School, opened the orientation
and welcomed all participants to the Graduate School
and gave all participants a chance to introduce
themselves. Later, the Dean had Assistant Professor
Dr. Nuchanata Mungkung, Deputy Dean for Academic
Affairs, given a presentation on visions and
objectives, the organizational structure, as well
as the administrative team. Dr. Nuchanata further
presented some valuable statistics and charts.
She also elaborated on the characteristics of the
distinct programs of doctoral degrees, master’s
degrees, and other diplomas and also focused on the English proficiency examination regulation as
well as the transfer of TOEFL or IELTS results. The Deputy Dean moreover provided guidance for the
students on the development of their study plan, as to allow students to successfully complete
their studies within the timeframes specified.
Next, she further introduced the students to the Graduate School services, the thesis library,
the English editing service, and the Student Exchange Program in cooperation with the Louisiana
State University (LSU). Moreover, she introduced English activities provided by the Graduate
school, such as English conversation groups, the English Oral Examination Practice for Doctoral
Degree Students, the English writing workshops, and the Brown Bag Lunch Seminars operated
by an English Editor of the Graduate School, Mr. Sandro (Alex) Kunz. Then Dr. Nuchanata invited
questions and offered her assistance with issues put forward by the students.
Finally, all students had a chance to tour all sections of the Graduate School. On the ground
floor, the students had an opportunity to look at the exhibition of the awarded thesis and to
familiarize themselves with the student service counter as well as the queuing system. In addition,
students were given an opportunity to get used to with the various forms which they are likely
to encounter during the course of their studies. At the end of the Orientation Day, students took
a group photo together.
