PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
IT WAS A CONSPIRACY by Mark Kozlevcar
I recently returned from the San Joaquin Valley Miata Club’s (SJVMC) 2012
Poker Run. Each spring, the SJVMC puts on a Poker Run. Past SOCALM
president Bob Davis has been to all of them and his lovely wife Juli (no ‘e’
in Juli) has a closet full of polo shirts to prove it! The idea behind a Poker
Run is to drive around the wonderfully twisty roads in the foothills below
Yosemite and draw playing cards as you go. By the time you finish the
run, you have five random playing cards that amount to a poker hand.
However, poker is really not the point of the event. This fantastic event
raised over $1000 for Manna House, a San Joaquin Valley local charity in
the Oakhurst area. There are also raffle prizes that were available to be
won by anyone with a little bit of money (remembering that it is for a good
cause) and a dream of a car detailing kit or bottle of tawny port from the
prestigious and award winning Ficklin winery.
As you may remember from last month’s Reward,
I managed to win the “Best in Show” portion
of the car show, with which my entry was
rewarded with a pair of engraved drinking
glasses. I also won the best in the NB category,
for which I was awarded a fantastically decorated
blue ribbon.
About the conspiracy…
In recent years, there has been a car show associated with this event. Last
year, a certain SOCALM member thought it would be a hoot if my plain emerald
mica (green) 1999 won the car show. He took all of the ballots that
he could get and voted for my well loved and unwashed, yet very serviceable,
daily driver. Alas, this was not successful and my Miata was handed a
resounding defeat at the hands of a very deserving entry, mostly because
to not make it obvious, some ballots were voted for other cars. You can
bet that the mistake of “not being so obvious” would not be repeated in
2012.
In the interim, I have upgraded to a lava orange 2005 MazdaSpeed, a
uniquely colored car that was indeed more deserving than my previous
entry. This was all the incentive that this certain SOCALM member needed
(along with a little encouragement from me) to attempt to stuff the ballot
box again to bring the “Best NB” and “Best in Show” titles to Southern
California. Also, I helped him out a little bit by campaigning to all who
would listen that they should vote for my car (#5).
There is no shame in that, is there? (OK, there might be a little bit of
shame in that…)
CLUB INFORMATION
SOCALM Library
Some of the members may not be aware that SOCALM has a
library. There are several reference items available to
members for their use. We have factory repair manuals for
model years 1990, 91, and 92. An enthusiast manual for the
early (1600cc) cars, along with suggested repair times
manuals for 1995 cars.
If you are thinking of planning a run, but are a little reluctant
because you’ve never done it before, there is an excellent
manual available to walk you through the process. Back
issues of Miata Magazine to Winter of 1992 are available. We
have a full set of past issues of The Reward, thanks to Bill
Strohm who donated his collection.
There are also some items that may be helpful, such as
2 portable CB radios for use on runs. A G-Tech meter for
measuring acceleration, horsepower and cornering G’s. A
trunk-mounted luggage rack is available to use on long trips.
These items are here for the use of any SOCALM
member in good standing. Just contact the club librarian
at librarian@socalm.org to make arrangements if you
wish to borrow items you need. Remember to always
promptly return any items that you have borrowed.
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE, cont’d
This year, the car show was split into three categories, and a “Best in Show” vote. The categories were based on body
style (NA 1990-1997, NB 1999-2005, and NC 2006-present), with a First Place and a Second Place on each line. So it
was possible to vote for my car three times on one ballot. In a less than subtle move, that is what was done this year;
and by gathering ballots that would have otherwise gone un-voted and by a fair amount of groveling and pleading, my
car was able to achieve victory in the NB category and win the Best in Show.
I would like to officially go on record that in no way my car was actually the best in the show. I assert only that I was
able to grovel and pander for enough votes or unused ballots to push my car over the victory line. This was the
greatest amount of fun that one can have at a car show! I had the privilege of actively engaging votes and pleading my
(albeit weak) case. For the record, I now am forever done actively campaigning to win any car show. I have done it
once, and am now able to retire as a champion at the 2012 SJVMC Poker Run car show, an honor that may possibly be
coveted by Miata owners throughout the free world! I also promised multiple SOCALM and SJVMC members that I
would not attempt to win ever again, provided I was able to pull this one off.
Success is sweet! I enjoyed winning, but I suspect that I have mortgaged my soul to make this happen. Have I
reduced myself to the level of Charlie Sheen (“Winning!”)?? A carpetbagger from the South (Southern California,
anyway) brought in enough votes to win a car show. When wildly and unimaginably stretched, this draws comparisons
to Bloody Kansas from those familiar with the American history of expansion into the plains States. Perhaps a more
fitting comparison is 1960 election of President Kennedy because of Mayor Dailey’s “influence” (dead people were
alleged to have voted in Chicago) in delivering the State of Illinois’ electoral college votes. There is a more recent
example of voting issues that I will not mention directly here, suffice to say the Supreme Court settled the matter.
American history is rife with examples of external influences upon elections. While this car show coup in no way rises
to the importance of the historical examples cited above, it was nonetheless fun to have been involved.
As we like to state to the point of mantra, SOCALM is a driving club. That is one of the things that we as a club
aspire to in the utmost. We are also about having as much fun as is possible. No two ways about it, the annual SJVMC
Poker Run is a fun event. The SJVMC always puts on an outstanding event. My hat is off to the entire Committee that
puts this event together. Every second of it is a blast. Driving the fantastic roads, eating lunch along the run,
banqueting in the evening and recapping the run, and supporting a fantastic charity via a raffle. Meeting old friends
again and making some new ones along the way. All of it!
I can’t think of a better way to spend a weekend.
FOR ANYONE INTERESTED IN: GoPro Hero2 HD Cameras and accessories
Outdoor Equipment Rentals has recently begun renting this camera and
use the camera to record track events, cruises, races, etc using a variety of provided
mounts.
MIATAS IN MOAB V—May 3-5, 2012
THE PLACE:
Moab is along the southeastern border of Utah, where nature has carved rocks rising out of the desert, mesas, buttes,
sandstone pinnacles, spires, and arches - monuments to 500 million years of gigantic earth uplifts and perpetual forces
of erosion. This locale is truly awe-inspiring, with rock formations that captivates imagination with their immensity
and timelessness. This is where we Miata drivers met……. this is where we found beauty, adventure and fellowship.
killer margaritas (right Marna?).
For those not familiar with this run, it is all about driving
the most fun, twistiest roads we can find over the course
of two days. It runs through mountains,
valleys, next to rivers, through forests,
and everywhere else you can imagine
(and some things you can’t). This year’s
run will generally follow the route we
took on the very first Twisted
Weekend. So come on out, have a great
drive on some great roads through some
beautiful country, and see why
Miataphiles love Twisted Weekend!
Description: The last time we traveled on Breckenridge
Rd was over four years ago. Well, it’s time to do it
again. You guessed it! Twisted Weekend is going back to
Lake Isabella! I have another surprise for you! Some of
you may know this, but most do not: The Kern River
Golden Trout Resort closed in 2008; Alice and Mick had
decided to move on; that’s why we haven’t gone
back. This small hotel, sitting next to the Kern River, was
one of the only reasonable places in the area to stay for a
large group of Miataphiles - if you didn’t want to pitch a
tent - so when it was gone there wasn’t really any place
else to stay.
BUT WAIT! Along comes another group of people who
have finally decided to take over the hotel and bring it
back to life. This group has spent two years getting it
ready and it is now reopening to the public (as Corral
Creek Resort) on – drum roll please – June 21, 2012! We
have all 22 rooms reserved for June 23rd (Tassy and I
already reserved ours, so there’s 21 left, do you see
where this is going?)! I have a discounted rate for this
newly refurbished place of $118.00 for Saturday night,
with taxes and fees included. Don’t wait! Reserve your
room NOW! Don’t be left to pitch a tent in the woods
(though that might be fun too). Call 760-376-3601 and
talk to Becka to reserve your room.
Food: I have set the reservations at Johnny McNally's, so
we will be heading to the restaurant at 6:30pm Saturday
night. Also, lunch will be at the Tehachapi airport; a small
diner there called The Raven's Nest. There are some
logistical issues regarding ordering from this cafe which I
will explain more about at the end of this month (May).
Stay tuned for more information.
Routes: Breckenridge, Sherman Pass, and Forest Route
23S16 are all currently closed. I was assured by the Kern
River Ranger Station that all will be open and ready to go
by 21 June. It was a drier than normal winter up there, so
I'm told that the ice is only a couple feet thick on those
roadways right now (good to know).
Events: There is a rumor going around that our group
will be making a stop at Willow Springs along the way.
I'm sure I don't know what might make them think that…
We encourage you to mark your calendar and support the planned
Runs— AND, don’t forget to attend the monthly Socials. You will travel
on some fantastic roads, participate in enjoyable and entertaining
events, meet and greet some truly outstanding people, eat excellent
food and share some GREAT times with your fellow Miata enthusiasts!
See you there!! - Be sure to Join in the Fun!!!
Zoom Zoom
As in the past when we go to Lake Isabella, we will have
dinner at a little restaurant called Johnny McNallys. If
you've never heard of it, you haven't been with the club
Description: Several years ago, Bill Bryant led a Socalm
run to Three Rivers. We spent a relaxing weekend
exploring Sequoia/Kings Canyon National Park and the
foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Bill spoke often
of repeating this run but he was not able to before he
passed away last year. So this September we will honor
Bill on the first day of our 4 day adventure through Sequoia,
Kings Canyon and Yosemite National Parks.
On Thursday we will gather in Canyon
Country, head to Tehachapi for lunch,
then meander through the foothills to
spend the night in Three Rivers. Friday
we will visit the Big Trees in Sequoia/Kings
Canyon NP, then continue
on to Oakhurst, where we will lodge
Friday and Saturday nights. Saturday will be a day of
choices – I will have local runs to choose from or you can
explore Yosemite on your own. If you have never been to
Yosemite, I highly recommend taking one of the guided
tour buses. On Sunday, we will go into Yosemite as a
group, travel over Tioga Pass and head home via Hwy
395.
Accommodations: Since September is
the end of the peak season, we will not
be having a group hotel booking. Everyone
will be on their own to find a hotel to
fit their own taste and pocketbook. Oakhurst
has more hotels than I could possibly
list here. Three Rivers has been hit
hard by the economy and there are not as many hotels as
in years past. There is a list of available accommodations
on the Chamber of Commerce website at
www.threerivers.com. After driving through town, the
ones that look the most promising to me are Comfort Inn
& Suites (800-331-2140), Sierra Lodge (888-575-2555),
Gateway Restaurant & Lodge (559-561-4133) and Buckeye
Tree Lodge (559-561-5900). I have listed the hotels
in west to east order and I am not endorsing anyone of
them since I have not stayed in any of them.
Directions: Make your way to the I-5 north, then take
the 14 Freeway north. Exit at Sand Canyon. Turn right,
then IMMEDIATELY turn left. The Denny’s is behind the
gas station. Come early and have breakfast at Denny’s.
SUMMER DRIVING TIPS
Mazda Gives Tips for Hot Summer Driving, Riding
Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) is the maker of the MX-5 Miata, the best-selling
convertible sports car in the planet, with an optional power-retractable hard top that consumes
no trunk space. It celebrates the mark of the unofficial start of summer driving
through offering some driving tips for the season to assure convertible drivers all over the
United States safely enjoy their vehicles.
BUT, very different from other authorized organizations, their tips also encompasses
humans as the subject and NOT JUST the car.
Their recommended daily care routine tips are as follows:
For the human skin, at least SPF 15 sunscreen rating should be
applied. A sun exposure of 15 minutes per day is tantamount to
90 hours per year of incidental sun exposure.
Wearing sunglasses will help prevent too much of the sun's heat
from entering your eyes. Always wear them also to protect your
eyes from airborne debris.
While driving or riding in a convertible, always pony your hair to
prevent wind damage and dry hair. You may also wrap your hair
in a bun or use a hat. Also, make sure to always bring extra hair
products - hairpins, butterfly clamps or rubber bands.
When driving with top down or low windows, avoid leaving
loose sheets of papers, pieces of light clothing, or plastics.
These things will surely be driven by the wind. In effect, you are
adding to the deterioration of the ecosystem.
If you want to leave the roof down, do not park near trees to
pave way for the birds' resting area.
Before opening or closing the top, pull over and have a complete
stop. Aside from an unsafe distraction, the parts that control
the top may be damaged by the wind.
To avoid dryness or dehydration, drinking plenty of water is
recommended. A moisturizer and a lip balm can also be a remedy.
And above all, always ensure safety regardless of the length of
the trip.
Jim O'Sullivan, President and CEO of MNAO, said that the MX-5 Miata is the most sold convertible sports car all
over the world, and according to him only Mazda has the authority "to speak on behalf of top-down, wind-inyour-hair,
and sun-on-your-face driving fun".
Summer road trips will be seen any time from now. With this, O'Sullivan said everyone must keep those road
tips in mind. O'Sullivan added that driving a Mazda means a wonderful trip.
JUST FOR FUN, eh ??
Water Pump Inspection
TECH TALK
The majority of water pump failures are attributed to leaks of some sort. When the pump seal
fails, coolant will begin to seep out of the weep hole in the casting. Signs of leakage from the
water pump vent will indicate that the pump's seal is bad. This is an early indicator of trouble.
The seals may simply wear out due to abrasives in the cooling system, or some types of seals
crack due to thermal shock such as adding cold water to an overheated engine. This could also
cause other internal parts to fail such as an occasional cracked casting. Water pump bearing or
seal failure can be caused by surprisingly small out-of-balance conditions.
To check a water pump, start the engine and listen for bad noises, using a mechanic's stethoscope.
Place the stethoscope on the bearing or pump shaft. If a louder than normal noise is
heard, the bearing is defective.
Tom Wood
WARNING
Whenever working near a running engine, keep your hands and clothing away from the moving fans, pulleys, and belts.
Do not allow the stethoscope to be caught by the moving parts.
Here are some tests that can be performed on your car:
- If shaft moves more than 1/16 inch (1.58 mm) it would indicate worn bearings that require water pump replacement.
- To determine whether the water pump is allowing for good circulation, warm up the engine and run it at idle speed.
- Squeeze the upper hose connection with one gloved hand and accelerate the engine with the other hand.
- If a surge on the hose is felt, the pump is working.
- Any air being sucked into the cooling system is certain to have a detrimental effect. It cuts down pumping efficiency
and causes both corrosion and wear at a rate above normal.
- To test for aeration, have the engine fully warmed up, all hose connections tight, and the coolant level up to normal.
Attach one end of a small hose to the radiator overflow pipe and put the other end into a jar of water.
- Run the engine at a fast idle. If a steady stream of bubbles appears in the jar of water, air is getting into the cooling
system.
- Check first for a cylinder gasket leak by running a compression test.
- If two adjacent cylinders test low, the gasket is bad. Otherwise, there is an air leak somewhere else in the cooling
system.
Replacing the water pump
When replacing a water pump, it is necessary to drain the cooling system. Any components--belts, fan shroud unit,
should be removed to make the pump accessible.
Installing a water pump.
Loosen and remove the bolts in a crisscross pattern from the center outward.
Insert a rag into the block opening and scrape off any remains of the old gasket.
WARNING:
When working on the coolant system (for example, replacing the water pump or thermostat), a
certain amount of coolant will spill on the floor. The antifreeze in the coolant causes it to be
very slippery. Always immediately wipe up any coolant that spills to reduce or eliminate the
chance of injury.
When replacing a water pump, always follow the procedures recommended by the manufacturer:
- Most often a coating of good waterproof sealer should be applied to a new gasket before it is placed into position on
the water pump.
- Coat the other side of the gasket with sealer, and position the pump against the engine block until it is properly
seated.
- Install the mounting bolts and tighten them evenly in a staggered sequence to the torque specifications with a torque
wrench. Careless tightening could cause the pump housing to crack. Check the pump to make sure it rotates freely.
- Miata engines are driven by the engine's timing belt. When replacing the water pump on these engines, it is suggested
to replace the timing belt. Also consider the radiator cap and thermostat also.
- Make sure all pulleys and gears are aligned according to specifications when installing the belt.
Water pumps can be changed at a Tech Day but it does take a lot of time to do. Make sure if you need this done to
make pre-arrangements with the Tech Day host.
