CLUB INFORMATION
SOCALM is a non-profit organization whose primary
purpose is to gather for enthusiastic fun and to share
information about the Mazda Miata MX-5.
Annual Dues: $25.00 per year due annually June 1. If
you are a New Member joining June 1 through November
1 your dues are $25.00; if you join December 1
through May 31 your dues are $15.00 the first year and
$25.00 there after.
Submissions to The Reward should be sent to the club
address below. You can also send articles, pictures, and
letters via e-mail to editor@socalm.org.
The standard deadline for submissions is the 15th of
the month, but you should always call the Editor-in-
Chief to check on last minute submissions.
Submissions may be edited for content or length.
The Reward, its contributors, the and SOCALM assume
no liability for the accuracy or legality of any information
appearing herein.
Reprint permission: Use of articles or stories by other
Miata clubs is hereby granted, provided proper credit to

Some of the members may not be aware that SOCALM has a library.
There are several reference items available to members
for their use. We have factory repair manuals for model years
1990, 91, and 92. An enthusiast manual for the early (1600cc)
cars, along with suggested repair times manuals for 1995 cars.
If you are thinking of planning a run, but are a little reluctant
because you’ve never done it before, there is an excellent manual
available to walk you through the process. Back issues of
Miata Magazine to Winter of 1992 are available.
We have a full set of past issues of The Reward, thanks to
Bill Strohm who donated his collection.
There are also some items that may be helpful, such as 2 portable
CB radios for use on runs. A G-Tech meter for measuring
acceleration, horsepower and cornering G’s. A trunk-mounted
luggage rack is available to use on a long trip.
These items are here for the use of any SOCALM member in good

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
The Year To Come

W
ell SOCALM has been around
going on twenty years. We are
hoping for a twenty year celebration with
our club members from the past to the
present to join in and let Mazda know that
their little cars have made such a big hit
with Miata owners. It doesn’t matter which
color or model you drive it’s the fact that
being able to share the road and memories
of some of the runs and events that we
have introduced to our Miata friends.
At our January meeting we listed events
from Tech Days to day runs and trips with

not only our club but to join in on some of
our fellow clubs on some of their signature know that

other states, like the Moab IV event in their little

So as you can see reading in the clubs RE-
WARD newsletter SOCALM has a lot of things planned this year. This is
your club, you paid your dues and I know you want to have as much fun
as the rest of those putting on the events this year. So if you would like to
help and make this year a real fun and pleasurable experience, volunteer
to lend a hand or help plan one of the events. After all you get to know
each other more on a personal level and
have a lot of fun planning something to
do with the other club members.
I am so excited about this coming year
and again being elected your president is
quite exhilarating; and to know I have
been with this club now for 10 Years. My
wife and I have put on lots of events,
some runs to find roads that no one ever
thought of driving, we have raised money
for the “Hurricane Katrina” Habitat for
Humanity with the help of all the clubs in
California and donated $11,000.00. Sure
it took a little time and we visited many
clubs and sold buttons and had a contest
and incorporated some runs and events.
I and other members have put on Tech
Days and made improvements to each
others cars, we have lots of mechanical
members in the club and it is all part of
that $25.00 a Year Dues.
I have a great Board and volunteered
area representatives for this year; so get
ready for an exciting year is ahead with
lots to do with your Miata friends.

meeting ot the year. Everyone is welcome as we plan the
coming year.
Directions: From the 57, exit Grand Ave. eastbound thru
Diamond Bar to Chino Hills Pkwy and turn right. Go
approximately 0.5 miles to Windmill Creek and make
another right. Then 0.25 miles to a stop sign where
you'll turn right again onto Rancho Hills Dr. We're at
1571, a looooooong mile up the hill on your left.
OR
From the 60 (in the Pomona Area), exit Phillips Ranch
southbound...it becomes Chino Hills Pkwy. At approximately
3.0-3.5 miles, turn right onto Windmill Creek and
follow the instructions above.
Desert Tower Run

of our most popular twists and turns. This year will be the
same as last with the addition of a bit more sunshine (I

Description: I have "taken" so many members to Julian
that I've lost count. However, it's always a fun drive,
particularly to see if we can "lose" Bud just ONE MORE
TIME! The run will start south of Corona, drive the back
roads to Lake Elsinore, head west of Murietta and Temecula,
using DeLuz Canyon, of course, and end up in Julian
by 2:30 or so. Once again, be prepared for a full day of
Miata Fun!
Directions: Find your way to the intersection of Rt 91
and I-15. Head south on I-15, exit Cajalco Rd and head
west (right). We'll be gathering in the parking lot of the
strip center between the Mobile station and Jack-In-The-
Box.

10:30 to leave at 11:00 on the upper level of the parking
structure if you would like to go for a spin. I’m looking for
a VOLUNTEER (directions will be provided) to LEAD us
on a little spin! Thanks in advance!
You’re on your own for other meals! Please post when
you’re leaving for caravans. There will be the usual caravan
for Friday morning at Ontario Outlet Mall near Dave &
Busters to depart at 10:30, stopping at Barstow Outlets
for fuel and food somewhere between 11:30 and 12:30,
departing from Flying J at 12:30. Please confirm if you
are planning to meet for this caravan so we know who to
expect where and don’t leave anyone behind. For those of
you that have CB’s we use Channel 10. All future info
will be posted online so check the group email list or call
me.
Time to gather those wrappers and start rolling your
coins! We always have a blast; you won’t want to miss
out! Invite your family and friends for a getaway! I’ve
invited 10 other Miata Clubs Should be great fun! The
more the merrier! Even OTM’s are welcome! Don’t forget
the annual gathering Saturday night in my room around
5:00 to 5:30 ish BYO Snacks and Beverages. Not to

Description: I have wanted to visit Calico for many
years. The last time I was there I was 2 years old. So I
decided to host this destination event.
Weather permitting we will enjoy a drive through the
mountains on our way to Calico. I do have an interesting
alternate drive planned if there is too much snow in the
mountains.
For those who are not familiar with Calico Ghost Town, it
is one of the few original Old West Mining Towns. Onethird
of the original buildings from the 1880’s are still
standing. The rest of the structures have been carefully
reconstructed in the old west spirit. (Check out
www.calicotown.com for more information.) There is a
$6.00 entrance fee.
The drive will take about three hours to get to Calico. We
will eat lunch, shop, wander, pan for gold and just generally
enjoy ourselves. We will leave about 5:00pm and
head home via I-15. Anyone who is planning on attending
the SDMC Puke on Sunday can get a hotel room in
Escondido and continue on down the I-15 after the Calico
Run.
We also recommend starting your day with a hearty
breakfast at Richie’s before the run. Plan on getting to
the restaurant by 8:00am and enjoy home-style cooking.
Directions: Make your way to I-15 in Ontario, exit at
Foothill Blvd (located half way between the I-10 and I-
210). Go west in Foothill. Monet Ave is the first street on
the right west if the I-15. Turn right on Monet, then right
into Richie’s (and Chevron & Jared) parking lot.
