December 2012 Vol. 23, No. 12
T’was the night before Christmas and in the garage,
There wasn't a trace of a Ford or a Dodge.
The presents were wrapped and the lights were all lit,
So I figured I'd mess with the Miata a bit. I lifted the hood,
When a deep voice behind me said, "She looks pretty good.”
Well, as you can imagine, I turned mighty quick,
And there, by the workbench, stood good ole Saint Nick!
We stood there a bit, not too sure what to say,
Then he said "I don't suppose you'd trade for my sleigh”
I said "No way, Santa" and started to grin,
"But if you've got the time we could go for a spin!”
His round little mouth, all tied up like a bow,
Turned into a smile and he said "Alright! Let's go!!”
So as not to disturb all the neighbors' retreat,
We pushed the Miata quietly into the street.
Then taking our places to drift down the hill,
I started my baby, it was always a thrill.
The sound that erupted took him by surprise,
But he liked it a lot, by the look in his eyes.
With tires a'cryin' and headlights aglow,
We headed on out where the hot Roadsters go.
And Santa's grin widened, approaching his ears,
With every shift up as it went through the gears.
Then he yelled "I can't recall when I felt so alive!”
So I backed off the gas and said "You wanna drive”
‘Ol Santa was stunned when I gave him the keys,
When he walked past the headlights he shook at the knees!
Then the muffler erupted with that grumbling sound,
When Santa stomped on the gas the tires gripped the
ground!
Chirped into second and again into third,
I just sat there holding on, at a loss for words.
Then I heard him exclaim as he blasted from sight,
"Merry Christmas to all, it's been a wonderful night!!!"
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
by Mark Kozlevcar, 2012 Socalm President
Year End Message and Musings
December in Southern California has its advantages. I grew up where it
was COLD and it SNOWED. While I miss my family in Illinois, I do not regret
trading the brutally cold and windy weather for a Mediterranean desert
climate. December also brings with it some of the best SOCALM activities of
the year.
The Annual SOCALM Holiday Party is being held at the Wood’s home in Fontana on December
1. I am looking forward to catching up with folks that I only get to see once a year,
and I am really looking forward to the gift exchange. This is not your normal gift exchange.
You have a choice. When it is your turn, you may open any wrapped gift or you may “steal”
something that someone else has already opened. The same gift can’t be stolen during the
same turn. Once a gift has been stolen twice, the gift is frozen and can’t be stolen. People
have all sorts of strategies. Some people try to “hide” their gift, while others openly wish that
you would steal their gift. Folks have been known to conspire with one another. Popular gifts
in the past have included coffee, car related items, booze, and car related items.
In an unrelated gift exchange conspiracy, I was involved on one of these gift exchanges at another gathering where
the requirement was to bring an edible gift. At the end, on the very last turn, the final steal that I made dictated that
someone ended up with pickled pigs feet (I’m not kidding) while I ended up with fudge from Disneyland. This was a
very entertaining event that is still spoken of years later.
Ten (10) 4-wheel sets of plastic shimmery
Snowflake Wheel covers have been made
as decorations for our Miatas. Add/bring
your own “Let it Snow” car decorations,
and join us early in order to decorate and
line-up for the parade!!! Info, pg 10
Speaking of events that are spoken of years later, the El Segundo
Holiday Parade, on December 9 th . This year mark’s SOCALM’s
sixth consecutive year of participation in the parade. This is one of the
slowest and shortest runs that the club puts on.
El Segundo holds a small town parade with lots of kids participating. We
have a great time driving down the middle of Main Street driving in figure
8s and weaving back and forth from curb to curb handing out candy
to children who line the parade route hoping to replenish their candy
supply that had no doubt been depleted during the month of November.
The kids usually collect enough candy to hold out until Easter. In addition,
I have handed out information cards to folks who just wanted to
know a little bit more about SOCALM.
Near the end of the parade, the cars drive by a reviewing stand and parade
commentary is provided for broadcast on the community cable TV
channel. The host and hostess of the parade read the copy that I have
provided and then usually ad some ad-lib comments. The first year’s
comments included my name in the copy, and each year I have continued
to do this just so I can see how bad they mispronounce it.
One year, the SOCALM parade entry deservedly won an award from the
parade judges. The theme that year involved movies and two of the
cars were dressed up as Lightning McQueen from the movie “Cars”.
This year, the theme is “Let It Snow”, which seems rather comical to
me. Snow is something to be avoided, especially when it comes to a Miata that is not equipped with all season tires.
Several Miatas found this out first hand in the Willamette Pass in Oregon two Springs ago. [see photo above]
4 The Reward - official newsletter of the Southern California Miata Club December 2012 www.socalm.org
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE, cont’d...
Hopefully, there will be no snow on December 9 th in El Segundo - at least
none until after the parade ends and everyone has made it to California
Pizza Kitchen for a late lunch/early dinner to recount the events of the day.
As of press time, December 9 th is not “cookie day” for a certain Miata club
family.
Please tentatively mark your calendar for the SOCALM Annual Meeting, planned for January 12, 2013, at
Mazda in Irvine. As near as I can tell, this day is not scheduled to be “cookie day” either, so
we are safe from that! It could however end up being a storied day in the life of ukulele
players throughout Southern California, as a special resolution is in the plans. The final details
of the annual meeting will be in the January Reward.
Consider serving your fellow Miataphiles by volunteering to be an area representative
or running for an elected office. Every year, there seems to be at least one area
representative office that remains vacant. Please consider serving even if you
are not able to play the ukulele. That is not a prerequisite for any elected or
appointed office.
You don’t even need to be able to bake cookies, though that could come in handy as an officer, but
as those of you who regularly read the President’s message know, I digress.
ON BEHALF OF THE SOCALM BOARD & AREA REPS, WISHING YOU AND YOUR FAMILY
A JOYOUS HOLIDAY SEASON AND A HEALTHY & PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR 2013
JUST FOR FUN, EH
Seasons Greetings & Happy New Year
PICTURES IN MEMORIAM—ZACK FROM THE MT BROADBENT
BALDY RUN
My Friend Zack
Zack Broadbent passed away last Wednesday (11.14.12) from complications due to
Hodgkins Lymphoma. I still have moments when it seems like it was all just a dream. I
met Zack in 2000 during his final term as President of SOCALM. The club was having
an event at the Orange Speedway in San Bernardino, and my Aunt, Marna, invited me
to come and see what the Miata’s were all about – or more specifically, to meet Zack
( we were both single at the time).
It was an interesting meeting – apparently he had made a bet with the members of
the club, and he lost. The price – he had to eat a piece of his car, Enzo. True to his
word, he cut a small part of the wiper blade and ate it. Luckily, he had a replacement
wiper blade with him. All I could do was shake my head & grin and as they say, that
was the start of a beautiful friendship.
Many of you may have your own memories of Zack, some good and some bad. He was
a man who stood by his beliefs, even if they were unpopular with others. Over the
years, he became less involved in SOCALM, but he still loved to take his Enzo out on
the curves; to test his limits even though he was getting older (I couldn’t believe it
when Enzo turned 20 in October!).
I will miss Zack. Thanks to my friendship with him, I met some wonderful people,
bought a spiffy little car (my own Kodora), learned how to expand my mind and how
to love.
Thank you Zack – you will forever have a part of my heart.
HOLIDAY PARADE
Everyone loves a parade. Christmas comes once a year, and if you are in the holiday spirit after
the Holiday Party, you can BE A PART OF the parade. The El Segundo 49th Annual Holiday Parade
takes place on Sunday December 9th. This year's theme is "Let It Snow!".
11:30am— car decorating begins 12:30pm—line-up begins 1:00pm—Parade begins
I estimate that we will be lining-up near the corner of Imperial Avenue and McCarthy Court.
Directions: If arriving from the south, take Grand Avenue west to Center Street. Turn right on Center Street, follow
north to Imperial Avenue. Turn left and find the group of Miatas! If you are arriving from the 105 Freeway please use
the California Street exit. Turn left off the 105 Freeway on to California. Follow California to Imperial Avenue, make a
right then follow Imperial Avenue to the group of Miatas!
Please note: The intersection of Main Street/Imperial Avenue will be closed. This is for the safety of the parade participants.
Even though this is a driving club, this will be the shortest and SLOWEST run that you will ever participate
in. Here are the run directions:
1) Zero out your odometers and line up on Imperial Avenue
2) 0.1 turn LEFT on Main
3) 1.1 Parade ends at Main and El Segundo
4) Drive to California Pizza Kitchen in Manhattan Beach
Following the parade, we will meet at a restaurant to recap the harrowing
experiences that we had at top speeds of seven miles per hour
driving down the middle of the yellow line.
Here are the rules for entries into the parade:
1) You are encouraged to decorate your entry (car) based upon the
theme of the parade and/or holiday season.
2) All designs and entries should be suitable for family viewing.
3) Please do NOT use a representative in a Santa costume. Santa ALWAYS rides on the
Chevron Fire Truck at the end of the parade. We would not want children to be confused by seeing more
than one Santa.
4) Commercial advertising is prohibited, but two banners or signs
(maximum size 6’ X 2’) may be placed on two sides of the entry to acknowledge
sponsoring companies/ organizations.
5) Candy or other items may NOT be thrown from a car/van/float, etc. If
items are to be distributed, then you may have
members of your group (read that as
“passenger”) walk along side the crowd at the
curb and hand them out. (This rule is pretty much
ignored, though).
HOLIDAY PARTY
The Socalm Holiday Party this year will be held on Saturday December 1, 2012 at Tom & Marna Wood’s
house (5067 Glenwood Ave, Fontana). We will celebrate the holidays with our friends from the Miata community,
exchanging food, gifts and lots of smiles.
FOR THE POT LUCK, Tom & Marna will furnish meat and beverages. If your last name begins with A
through G please bring an appetizer; with H through R bring a main dish; with S through Z bring a dessert.
GIFT EXCHANGE, once again we will have a gift exchange. This year, see if you can come up with something
unusual or special. Some suggestions: check out knobmeister.com or crazyred.com for Miata themed
gifts. There are other similar websites listed on miatafun.net on the Vendors page. Let’s keep it simple
and fun and under $25.
Come ready to have a fun and festive evening. Celebration starts at 5:00pm and is usually over around
10:00pm.
For those who are coming a distance and don’t want to drive home after the party, here are several nearby
hotels we can recommend, listed in order of distance from our house.
- Comfort Inn 13500 Baseline Ave, Fontana
- Four Points 12020 Foothill Blvd, Rancho Cucamonga (near Victoria Gardens, our local premiere shopping
center)
- Best Western Heritage Inn 8179 Spruce Ave (just off Foothill Blvd), Rancho
Cucamonga
Directions: Make your way to I-15 in the Inland Empire. Exit Summit Avenue (first
exit north of the I-210) interchange. Turn right at end of off ramp onto Beech Avenue.
Go to Cherry Avenue and turn right. Go 1½ miles to Roadrunner Road, turn
right. Go to Wildwood Lane, turn right. Wildwood turns into Glenwood.
twisties (OMG!) on Glendora Ridge Mountain
