PRESIDENT’S MESSAGESafety in Numbersby Mark KozlevcarYou heard it from your mother whenyou were young. “It’s all fun andgames until someone gets hurt.” Whendriving your Miata anywhere and everywhereyour and your passenger’s safetyis your first priority. This applies at alltimes. It applies when you are on arun. It applies when you driving aroundtown. It applies when you are drivingin the country. It applies when drivingin the suburbs.Roads that are routinely run on our“you must beplanned and impromptu runs tend tohave lots of curves and they tend tosure to NEVERchange elevation. These roads runthrough some of the most beautiful areasin the world. They tend to be sce-drive beyondnic. However, these roads can alsoyour abilitytend to be more technically demandingthan what you generally encounter on aand beyondday to day basis. I have been on severalruns with SOCALM and with otherthe capabilityclubs. At each drivers’ meeting safetyis emphasized. I am told that we inof yourSOCALM have a better safety recordthan most car clubs.equipment”If you have never been on a run, Iwould encourage you to join us on one. However, you must be sure to NEVER drive beyond your ability and beyondthe capability of your equipment. Remember that we are a club ofenthusiasts. That means that we can and do modify our cars to fit ourinterest and our budget. Appearances can be deceiving. Other driversmay be running superior equipment. They may be running stickier higherspeed rated tires and super chargers. Do not let this discourage you. Thebasic character of the Miata has not changed in the twenty years that theyhave been on the road.On a SOCALM run, you MUST drive at your own pace. If you wish to driveslower, stay near the back. If you wish to drive faster, you should drivecloser to the front. You usually will receivea copy of the run directions. In addition, the number one run rule is thatyou wait for the Miata behind you. Besure that when you turn, you see a Miatabehind you. If you don’t, pull over andwait at the corner. Don’t worry aboutlosing touch with the people ahead ofyou. They will wait up ahead at the nextcorner for you. Also, if you have cartrouble, someone will wait with you. There is always a sweep car that followsthe group and makes sure that people donot get lost. The sweep car almost alwayshas a radio or other way to communicatewith the run leader.Different people drive different speedsdepending upon their training, their abilities, and their equipment. Many membershave significant amounts of tracktime and specialized training. After a fewruns, you will figure out what group youbelong in when it comes to your drivingability. Stick with these folks. This willhelp you to not drive beyond your ability. If you find that the part of the group youare in is driving too fast for you, wave thecars behind you around and let them passyou when it is safe. However, rememberthat if you wave the sweep car around, you are now on your own. Finally, observe all posted speed limitsand traffic laws. Remember that the yellowspeed signs for curves and the likeare advisory. Remember also that safetyon a run is both your and our first priority.Mark & Nancy Lucero’s March SouthBay Social was in the Pope Room atBuca di Beppo.4 The Reward - official newsletter of the Southern California Miata Club May 2009 www.socalm.org

Review – “Miata 20 Years”By Bob DavisMIATA 20 YEARSJust before Thanksgiving, 2008, I received an email fromBlake Johnson, Marketing Manager, for Motorbooks, “theworld’s leading publisher for the automotive enthusiast.”Mr. Johnson mentioned that Motorbooks had just releaseda book, entitled “Miata 20 Years,” written by Larry Edsall, that will take readers behind the scenes at Miata, celebratingthe car’s 20 th anniversary. It is a story of thecreation and evolution of one of the world’s best sportscars. He suggested that he send a complimentary copy ofthe book to me for review, particularly for members ofSocalm. I, of course, was more than ecstatic to oblige. Ican only apologize that it’s taken me more than four (4)months to comply with this request. As most of you know, although there are current Socalmmembers who joined the club well before me, I cheerfullychallenge anyone to have been, and continue to be, moreenthusiastic about the Miata and all that it representsover the past 17+ years. Juli & I wanted the car from thevery beginning. I mention this because I feel that I canvery truthfully say that I have “lived” the majority ofthese past 20 years totally immersed as a Miataphile and,as a result, found this book to stir many fond memories, and provide a very detailed and thorough history of theMiata from its inception in the mind of Bob Hall (if youdon’t know the name, you’ll have to read the book tocomplete your Miata education), to the 3 rd GenerationMiata that we enjoy today. There are many stories related in this publication fromsuch Miata dignitaries as Tom Matano, Bob Hall, NormGarrett, Barbara Beach and Phil Wolfson, Vince Tidwell, etc. I have personally met and had numerous fun-filledtimes with each of these personalities, and, they, in turn, have contributed to my ever-increasing list of Miatarelatedmemories. (Note: Tom Matano autographed theunderside of the trunk lid of our first Miata, a 1992 SilverstoneMetallic) It’s almost sacrilege to say “Miatarelated”because these memories are not just related tothis wonderful car. These memories have, as I’ve mentionedbefore, become my life.More than just the anecdotal items, Mr. Edsall has takengreat pains to provide one of the most thorough writtenhistories of the Miata that I have ever had the pleasure toread. The pre-unveiling portion of “Miata 20 Years” providesan insight into the minds and personalities of thenumerous people involved in bringing the Miata to life. The year-by-year details of options, colors, special editions, etc. provides not only a complete factual history, but attempts to bring to you the very thought processinvolved in the timing and selection of these details. Howand why did Special Editions become something thatevery Miataphile looks forward to for each upcomingmodel year? Why this color and not that? Why didn’tMazda introduce that option earlier? These questions andmany more are answered for you in “Miata 20 Years.”For those of you who have been part of the Miata culturefor nearly all of its two decades, this book will stir somememories and clarify information that you’ve probablylong forgotten. For the newer converts to the Miata wayof life, this publication will provide a wonderfully concisehistory for you so that you don’t have to listen to me forhours at the next social expounding upon such things.I enthusiastically recommend that you purchase “Miata20 Years” for your own collection of Miata memorabilia. It’s definitely worth the time to read.Excerpt from “Miata 20 Years”: In her report in July,Neff (Road Test Editor Natalie Neff, July, 2005) admittedthat she was having so much fun driving the car (Miata)that she had gotten lost, a fact not recognized until morethan an hour had passed since she’d missed a turn on theintended route. “The car proved a powerful distractionindeed, but we hardly cursed our fate,” she wrote. “Thelong detour just meant we’d get to spend that much moretime tooling around…an experience to relish rather thanregret.”And, who among you can disagree with that??!www.socalm.org May 2009 The Reward - official newsletter of the Southern California Miata Club 11

MAZDA PRESS RELEASENC 2008 NC 2009Pictures copyright Mazda USA MediaFor its 20th anniversary, the MX-5 receives refreshed exteriorstyling, interior enhancements, a stronger, higherrevving engine, increased fuel mileage, two new exteriorcolors - Competition Yellow and Liquid Silver Metallic -two new interior colors - Dune Beige Leather and HavanaBrown Leather, and numerous package changes. Howeverthe most exciting enhancements come to the MX-5'sperformance.DRIVER-FOCUSED POWERTRAIN:Throughout its history, the MX-5 Miata's focus has beenon driver enjoyment over raw performance. Followingthat philosophy, changes to the 2009 MX-5 powertrainare laser-focused on making the car even more fun todrive. At its heart, MX-5 continues to feature a highlyresponsiveMZR-series 2.0-liter powerplant. The light andcompact engine, featuring chain-driven double overheadcamshafts, a lightweight flywheel, variable intake valvetiming, electronically controlled port fuel injection andcoil-on-plug ignition, is positioned front-midship, well behindthe front axle centerline for ideal handling balanceand nimbleness. Slick-shifting 5- or 6-speed manualtransmissions, or a 6-speed Sport A/T automatic transmissionwith steering-wheel mounted shift paddles continueto deliver unparalleled driver involvement.New for 2009 are the following changes:More revs:On manual transmission models, the MZR 2.0-liter engine'sredline has been bumped up 500 rpm, to 7200,giving drivers more flexibility as they dive from corner tocorner on their favorite back road. Making this higherredline possible is a new forged steel crankshaft, forgedsteel connecting rods with floating wrist pins, revised pistonswith stronger wrist pin bosses, stiffer valve springs, and an engine oil cooler.Better sound:Classic sports car engine sound has always been a hallmarkof the MX-5 Miata. The original 1.6-liter 1990model was tuned to mimic the sound of dual-carburetedsports cars of the '60s. Key to a fuel-injected enginemaking that sound is careful tuning of intake resonance, and pointing the engine's air intake at the driver so thatsound is delivered with maximum effect. While the 1990Miata did just that, it drew in hot underhood air from behindthe radiator. Today's engine draws in cool air fromthe nose of the car for better efficiency, but getting thatclassic induction sound to the driver now requires newtechnologies.Since the 2006 model, the lightweight plastic compositeintake manifold itself has been designed to transmit certainfrequencies that match the classic sports car soundprofile, while suppressing less enjoyable sounds. For2009, 6-speed manual models also get an InductionSound Enhancer (ISE). Made up of a series of tunedpipes and a passive resonance membrane, the ISE deliversthe engine's natural induction sound to the cowl, justahead of the windshield, so pleasing engine sounds canbe delivered at a comfortable volume without resorting tosimply being loud.Improved transmission:Already considered one of the best in the world, for 2009,the MX-5 Miata's 6-speed delivers quicker, lighter, moredirect shift feel thanks to a new carbon coating on the 1stthrough 4th gear synchros and larger diameter syncrhoson 3rd and 4th gear. 6th gear is also slightly taller(0.787:1 vs. 0.832:1) for improved fuel economy andmore relaxed highway cruising.Though the engine's output on paper increases onlyslightly (now making 167 hp at 7000 rpm, up from 166hp at 6700 rpm), the combined effect on the driver's enjoymentis much greater.(Continued on page 13)12 The Reward - official newsletter of the Southern California Miata Club May 2009 www.socalm.org

LAUGHLIN RUNPictures from Drew Gainor(Continued from page 12)LEGENDARY HANDLING GETS EVEN BETTERWith its ideal weight distribution, compact dimensions, superior steering and chassis systems, the MX-5 Miatahas always offered agility, natural controllability and handlingsecond to none. Mazda's chassis engineers neverrest, though, so handling is improved even further for2009.The front suspension still consists of lightweight forgedaluminium double wishbones, but the outer ball jointshave been repositioned slightly to lower the front roll centerabout an inch. Damping has also been completely retunedon both the standard suspension and the Bilsteinequippedsuspension package. The optional traction control and stability control systemshave also been thoroughly re-tuned to be less intrusiveduring sporty driving. As a result, the 2009 MX-5 reacts even more precisely todriver commands, with more linear responses, perfectlybalanced front and rear roll, and natural, nimble yaw response.Together, these modifications translate into anenhanced 'Jinba Ittai' feeling of control.RACE-READY FROM THE DEALERSHIPWeight-saving measures include the use of an aluminumhood and trunk lid, aluminum front control arms, aluminumrear uprights and rear calipers. The monococqueunibody makes widespread use of high-strength and ultrahigh-strength steel, boosting body strength while simultaneouslycutting weight. The 2.0-liter engine has an aluminumblock and head, the exhaust manifold is lightweighttubular steel instead of cast iron, and the intakemanifold and cam cover are made from lightweight compositeplastic. In the end, MX-5 is very light, yet roomyenough for larger adults, and safe for everyone, thanks toits strong body and safety features (including anti-lockbrakes on all trim levels, standard side airbags, and apassenger's airbag cutoff switch so you can carry youngchildren in a child safety seat).Above excerpt is from Mazda 2009 press kit:http://www.mazdausamedia.com/content/2009-mx-5www.socalm.org May 2009 The Reward - official newsletter of the Southern California Miata Club 13
