The Road…
It’s A Driving Club… Deal With It!
SOCALM is a driving club. It was my
pleasure to remind a fellow member
of this during the latest run/social
from Rancho Cucamonga to Hesperia,
ending at the Spring House
restaurant. More about that later…
The Inland Empire Rep, Donna Nelson,
hosted the weekend day run/
social combination, the second of its
kind this year; and I hope a precursor
of many more to come. When
the seven Miatas of various vintages left Rancho Cucamonga, it was HOT,
on the order of 100 degrees in the shade. I will eagerly attest that the air
conditioner on the Miata works well, even with the top down. We left the
starting point at about 4:00 P.M. for a leisurely drive to Hesperia via some
twisties. As we rose in elevation towards Hesperia, the temperature
dropped about 20 degrees. We encountered some wet roads along the
way, and eventually a slight sprinkle. Another well known and often utilized
Miata feature is that if you drive fast enough with the top down, you
do not get wet. The rain cooled off the run to the point where it was
downright pleasant. Water was running across the road in places, but not
enough to be of any concern.

CLUB INFORMATION
SOCALM is a non-profit organization whose primary purpose
is to gather for enthusiastic fun and to share information
about the Mazda Miata MX-5.
Annual Dues: $25.00 per year, due annually on June 1 st .
The membership of any new member(s) who join(s) during
the 6 month period from June 1 st through November 30 th
will expire as of the following June 1 st. . The membership of
any new member(s) who join(s) during the 6 month period
from December 1st through May 31st will expire as of June
1 st of the subsequent year (12-18 months later).
Submissions to The Reward should be sent to the club
address below. You can also send articles, pictures, and letters
via e-mail to editor@socalm.org. Submissions may be
edited for content or length. The standard deadline for submissions
is the 15th of the month, but you should always
call the Editor to check on last minute submissions. The Reward,
its contributors, and SOCALM assume no liability for
the accuracy or legality of any information appearing herein.

CLUB INFORMATION
SOCALM Library
Some of the members may not be aware that SOCALM has a
library. There are several reference items available to
members for their use. We have factory repair manuals for
model years 1990, 91, and 92. An enthusiast manual for the
early (1600cc) cars, along with suggested repair times
manuals for 1995 cars.
If you are thinking of planning a run, but are a little reluctant
because you’ve never done it before, there is an excellent
manual available to walk you through the process. Back
issues of Miata Magazine to Winter of 1992 are available. We
have a full set of past issues of The Reward, thanks to Bill
Strohm who donated his collection.
There are also some items that may be helpful, such as
2 portable CB radios for use on runs. A G-Tech meter for
measuring acceleration, horsepower and cornering G’s. A
trunk-mounted luggage rack is available to use on long trips.
These items are here for the use of any SOCALM
member in good standing. Just contact the club librarian
at librarian@socalm.org to make arrangements if you
wish to borrow items you need. Remember to always
promptly return any items that you have borrowed.

Dinner at The Spring House Restaurant in Hesperia was absolutely delightful. While
being seated, I had to maneuver around a twenty-something waitress. This maneuver
made it appear as if we were dancing. She asked me (half kidding) “Shall we
dance” This elicited from me “You can dance if you want to…” then I commented
that the reference was probably lost on her. Without missing a beat, she responded
(in an English accent) with the entire first verse of the song Safety Dance “We can
dance if we want to, we can leave your friends behind, cause your friends don't
dance and if they don't dance, well they're no friends of mine.” What a fun waitress!

Along with having a fun waitress, my
company for dinner was an absolutely
delightful newlywed couple. Ross and Patty
were celebrating their one month minus one
day anniversary. Ross teaches geology at
Cal State, and Patty is a librarian in New
Jersey. As I enjoy caving (a hobby which
involves exploring and touring caves), Ross
and I had a lively discussion of favorite
caves and other geological features.
Patty and I also discussed the greatest musician of
all time (who happens to be from New Jersey), Bruce Springsteen.
Bob—always a gentleman
Patty (which happens to be Bruce Springsteen’s wife’s name) related a story when she went to see Ringo Starr’s All
Starr Band in the rain, and had to leave right before Bruce Springsteen came on stage to perform. How disappointing!
The food that was served for dinner did not disappoint. For some unknown reason, I seem to have very bad luck
when ordering beef at Miata events (Twisted Weekend IV and 2012 Around the World come to mind immediately).
However, this fate would not beset me on this run. My fortune may be reversing, as I ordered and received a medium
rare cut of prime rib! This cut of meat was made complete with some au jus and creamy horseradish. All in all a very
satisfying meal with good company!
Now, about SOCALM being a driving club...after dinner, and after the official end of the run, as we were preparing to
make sunset run back down Interstate 15 to Handel’s Ice Cream in Rancho Cucamonga, a Member remarked that his
car was dirty. I told him that this is because “this (SOCALM) is a driving club, deal with it.” I was not trying to be
mean or sarcastic, even though that is how it might have sounded. Someone overheard my comment and asked if
“Deal with it” is what my President’s message article was going to be about. Yes, I think that it is.
But SOCALM is much more than that. Sure we drive, and for me that is the main focus. Some people like to get
together in parking lots and open their hoods and talk about their cars. Some folks like to get together and share a
meal. Personally, I have learned that I can fix some of what ails my car – slow or sticky windows for example. I have
also been able to collaborate with others in fixing their car or get advice on how to fix mine.
However, in the end it has been about making and developing friendships while driving some great roads, in short
“dealing with it” in a fun and jocular manner.

breakfast of Pancakes, scrambled eggs, country potatoes, bacon, oj and coffee. The Friends get $5 from each
ticket. You do not need to attend the breakfast to do the run but Friends of the Library would appreciate the
support. Those not attending the breakfast can meet in the Applebee’s parking lot at 9:30 AM. Contact Diana

Breakfast and Mt Baldy Run. The day starts with
Breakfast at Applebee's in West Covina from 8 AM to 10
AM. Cost for breakfast is $10 per

literacy & children’s programs in the
local community.

Description: Several years ago, Bill Bryant led a
Socalm run to Three Rivers. We spent a relaxing weekend
exploring Sequoia/Kings Canyon National Park and the
foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Bill spoke often
of repeating this run but he was not able to before he
passed away last year.

So this September we will honor Bill on the first day of our
4 day adventure through Sequoia, Kings Canyon and
Yosemite National Parks.
At 9:30am on Thursday we will gather at Denny's in
Canyon Country, head to Tehachapi for lunch, then
meander through the foothills to spend the night in Three
Rivers. Friday we will visit the Big Trees in Sequoia/Kings
Canyon NP, then continue on to Oakhurst, where we will
lodge Friday and Saturday nights. Saturday will be a day
of choices – I will have local runs to choose from or you
can explore Yosemite on your own. If you have never
been to Yosemite, I highly recommend taking one of the
guided tour buses. On Sunday, we will go into Yosemite as
a group, travel over Tioga Pass and head home via Hwy
395.
Since September is the end
of the peak season, we will
not be having a group hotel
booking. Everyone will be
on their own to find a hotel
to fit their own taste and
pocketbook. Oakhurst has
more hotels than I could
possibly list here. Three
Rivers has been hit hard by
the economy and there are not as many hotels as in years
past. There is a list of available accommodations on the
Chamber of Commerce website at
www.threerivers.com. After driving through town, the
ones that look the most promising to me are Comfort Inn
& Suites (800-331-2140), Sierra Lodge (888-575-2555),
Gateway Restaurant & Lodge (559-561-4133) and
Buckeye Tree Lodge (559-561-5900). I have listed the
hotels in west to east order and I am not endorsing
anyone of them since I have not stayed in any of them.
Directions: Make your way to the I-5 north, then take the 14
Freeway north. Exit at Sand Canyon. Turn right, then
IMMEDIATELY turn left. The Denny’s is behind the gas station.
Come early and have breakfast at Denny’s.

Description: Time for the annual Big Bear Run. Socalm
has put on this run every year since the club was
founded. This year we will traverse the mountains from

west to east. We will gather in Rancho Cucamonga, in the
parking lot of The Old Spaghetti Factory. We will stop for
a couple of hours in Big Bear Village for lunch and
shopping.
Then we will regroup and head
for the Big Bear Rescue Zoo
(formerly the Moonridge Animal
Park). This quaint little zoo is
across the street from Bear
Mountain Ski Resort. As the
name implies, the Big Bear Rescue
Zoo specialized in rehabilitation
and re-release. However,
they are sometimes brought animals that cannot be rereleased
and these are the animals on display. Being such
a small zoo, you can get amazingly close to the animals.
We will be there for the
afternoon feeding when the
keepers talk to the visitors
about the animals. Check out
their website at

Directions: Make your way to
the I-15 freeway. Foothill Blvd is
halfway between the I-10 and the
I-210. Go west on Foothill Blvd about 1 mile. The Old Spaghetti

Description: The Widowmaker is EXTREMELY EXCITED
to have this honor and run named in her behalf on the day
of her BIRTH because as she explains it …"this ride will
kill!!"
Just letting you know now this run is truly a MIATA'S
DREAM RUN— not for the "SQUEAMISH" or non-off
road types. If you don't like bumps, dips, HOLES and a
FEW curves~~~ BE ADVISED..THIS AIN'T YO MAMA'S
RUN!!
All in all, expect a 2 hr. run (give or take an few minutes)
from start to finish, including stops. We will be traveling
officially on the Ortega Hwy through the Cleveland National
Forest. Our course has been mapped, timed &
charted. We are planning on making one more final prerun
prior to event before
sending in map of route & all
important points of
reference. We are excited for
this event to take place!!

at a Pumpkin Farm, in our search for the Perfect Pumpkin
for this Halloween We’ll spend some time there—there
are many different activities to do at the Farm. After, we
will head out to finish the run, ending with a dinner.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS
El Segundo is a small town located in the South Bay. We hold a small town parade here. The Boy Scouts
(cordless drill team), Girl Scouts, Pop Warner Football and Cheerleaders, baton twirlers, Little League,
horse teams, Shriners, preschools, barber shop quartets, junior high and high school bands, along with
various businesses have participated in the past and are all expected back this year. The chamber of commerce
claims that 5000 people attend this parade each year.
Even though this is a driving club, this will be the shortest and SLOWEST run that you will ever participate
in.
Following the parade, we will meet at a restaurant to recap the harrowing experiences that we had at top
speeds of seven miles per hour driving down the middle of the yellow line. Here are the run directions:
1) Zero out your odometers and line up on Imperial Avenue
2) 0.1 turn LEFT on Main
3) 1.1 Parade ends at Main and El Segundo
4) Drive to California Pizza Kitchen in Manhattan Beach
Here are the rules for entries into the parade:
1) You are encouraged to decorate your entry (car) based upon the theme of the parade and/or holiday
season.
2) All designs and entries should be suitable for family viewing.
3) Please do NOT use a representative in a Santa costume. Santa ALWAYS rides on the Chevron Fire Truck
at the end of the parade. We would not want children to be confused by seeing more than one Santa.
4) Commercial advertising is prohibited, but two banners or signs (maximum size 6’ X 2’) may be placed on
two sides of the entry to acknowledge sponsoring companies/ organizations.
5) Candy or other items may NOT be thrown from a car/van/float, etc. If items are to be distributed, then
you may have members of your group (read that as “passenger”) walk along side the crowd at the curb
and hand them out. (This rule is pretty much ignored, though).

The Socalm Holiday Party this year will be held on Saturday December 1, 2012 at Tom & Marna Wood’s
house (5067 Glenwood Ave, Fontana). We will celebrate the holidays with our friends from the Miata community,
exchanging food, gifts and lots of smiles.
For the pot luck Tom & Marna will furnish meat and beverages. If your last name begins with A through G
please bring an appetizer; with H through R bring a main dish; with S through Z bring a dessert.

TECH TIPS
What’s under your hood and trunk items
If you're having a problem starting your car, it could be the battery, starter, alternator or another
component of your starting and charging system. That's why it's important to inspect each one of
them before you begin replacing parts. Whether you choose to do it yourself, or bring it to Tech
Days. SOCALM members are here to help you find out what's wrong so you can do the job right the
first time.
Pop the hood and make yourself familiar with your starting and charging system. Know each component,
what it does and how to inspect it.
1. Battery - supplies power to start your engine and energy for the vehicles electronics.
If your battery is over 4 years old, then it needs to be tested. You can do it yourself using a voltmeter or battery tester.
2. Battery Cables And Terminals carry power to all electronics.
Inspect for looseness and corrosion
3. Accessory Drive Belt - drives the alternator and any other pulley driven devices.
Look for excessive wear, cracking, glazing and make sure that the belt has the proper
tension and isn't loose. A loose or worn belt can make a squealing noise.
4. Starter - spins to start your engine.
Test your starter using an alternator/battery tester or voltmeter. A clicking or grinding
noise when you turn the key is a good indicator that your starter is bad. Visually inspect
your starter for signs of the problem.
5. Alternator - charges the battery and supplies power to your car while the engine is running.
Test your alternator using an alternator/battery tester or voltmeter. A dead battery, battery that won't stay charged, or
headlamps and interior lights that appear dim can indicate that your alternator is bad. Visually inspect your alternator for
signs of the problem
6. Fuses - protect the circuits in the charging system, lights, and accessories in your car.
Inspect fuses link or wire filament
Test fusible links using voltmeter
7. Dashboard - warning lights, and gauge readouts can provide clues to the source of your problem.
Make sure warning lights go off after your car has started.
Make sure gauges show a reading of 12 Volts when the car is off and rise to 14 Volts after it's started. (That is IF you
have a battery gauge in your Miata).
Pay attention to your Check Engine Light. It can also indicate a problem.
