Welcome to
another SO-
CALM driving
month. Time
sure flies when
you're out enjoying
your
Miata on some
of California’s
best back
roads. We have
had a little
snow in our hills this month, a little
rain, and lots of sunshine.
Still, I see lots of Miatas on the road
that are not members of SOCALM.
We need to get these people involved
with our club activities. How
do we do this you ask? Well you can
either tag cars you see in parking
lots, or maybe go up to them and

for putting on cars; we suggest
slipping one on the driver’s
window above the door handle. If
you get one put on your car just
use it to put on another car.
I have a SOCALM decal on my car
to show that I belong to a club. Lots
of members have bought one of
these at the meetings and put them
by the license plate area or on the
third stop light.
Don’t forget that the 11th and 12th
of June we have the "Auto Club
Speedway Event" where you get to
watch racing on Saturday and Sunday
for free. Also at noon we get to
go out on the track and drive where
the racers drive. They show you the

your home. This is one way of helping
your club to grow and increase
line to take and you get to see what
your car handles like on a race
track. You do not need helmets or
roll bars but your car should be in
good running condition. The meeting
place is across from Starbucks
just west of the I-15 freeway, just
north of the I-10 getting off on 4th
street in the movie parking lot. You

to lead the group over to the track

CLUB INFORMATION
SOCALM is a non-profit organization whose primary purpose
is to gather for enthusiastic fun and to share information
about the Mazda Miata MX-5.
Annual Dues: $25.00 per year, due annually on June 1 st .
The membership of any new member(s) who join(s) during
the 6 month period from June 1 st through November 30 th
will expire as of the following June 1 st. . The membership of
any new member(s) who join(s) during the 6 month period
from December 1 st through May 30 th will expire as of June
1 st of the subsequent year (12-18 months later).
Submissions to The Reward should be sent to the club address
below. You can also send articles, pictures, and letters
via e-mail to editor@socalm.org. Submissions may be edited
for content or length.
The standard deadline for submissions is the 15th of the
month, but you should always call the Editor-in-Chief to
check on last minute submissions.
The Reward, its contributors, the and SOCALM assume no
liability for the accuracy or legality of any information appearing

CLUB INFORMATION
SOCALM Library
Some of the members may not be aware that SOCALM has a
library. There are several reference items available to members
for their use. We have factory repair manuals for model
years 1990, 91, and 92. An enthusiast manual for the early
(1600cc) cars, along with suggested repair times manuals for
1995 cars.
If you are thinking of planning a run, but are a little reluctant
because you’ve never done it before, there is an excellent
manual available to walk you through the process. Back issues
of Miata Magazine to Winter of 1992 are available.
We have a full set of past issues of The Reward, thanks to Bill
Strohm who donated his collection.
There are also some items that may be helpful, such as 2
portable CB radios for use on runs. A G-Tech meter for measuring
acceleration, horsepower and cornering G’s. A trunkmounted
luggage rack is available to use on a long trip.
These items are here for the use of any SOCALM member in
good standing. Just contact club librarian Bill Bryant at

Auto Club Speedway Event
Date: June 11th and 12th
Time: 9:30am
Place: Auto Club Speedway, Fontana
Description: Saturday, 9:30 AM Meet across from Starbucks.
Go North on the I-15 to 4th street which is the first
off ramp north of the I-10. Go west, under the freeway to
the first corner and make a left. Park in the lot right
across from Starbucks and the theater. If coming south
on the I-15 get off at the 4th street off ramp, go straight
through the light and enter the first driveway on the right
into the parking lot. We leave as a group.
There will be laps on the course.
Auto crossing may be available to our members.
Sunday, Time to be determined at the track on Saturday.
Dinners after each event will be discussed as to where we
would like to eat.
Two days of fun things to do with your Miata's. And get to
watch the SCCA and Miata races.
Did I mention Each Day is FREE to go to the raceway and
you can talk to the drivers and check out the cars in the
garages.

Start at Forestiere Gardens, it is a wonder not to miss. All
the clubs will merge for a full day of adventures.
We will have dinner at China Station in Mariposa 7:30
We will enter the Park via Highway 140, do a Valley Loop,
wind our way up to Glacier Point. Yosemite at night time
UPCOMING EVENTS
is a magical experience. The ultimate tops down run, no
UVA/UVB. Please RSVP so I can give China Station a
head count. Added bonus: Saturday afternoon we will
tour the Underground Gardens in Fresno with our friends
from SAMOA details will follow as to lunch location and
time.
Mike is planning a trip to the Underground Gardens in
Fresno Saturday afternoon with his group from SAMOA,
we'll join his group for that, then they will head up the hill
to their motel, the Super 8 in Mariposa. If any of the
other folks from out of town would like to stay there also
they are welcome to call and get the "Miata Group" rate of
$80, but call early as this will be the height of busy season.
Contact has been made with China Station in Mariposa
and have arrangements for us to dine in their private dining
room at 7:30, full menu. The food is good and the
prices are right. We will join a group out of Fresno at
6:00 to meet up with the folks already up in Mariposa.
From there we will enter the park via Hwy 140 for our
final destination of Glacier Point, via a loop around the
Valley floor and a stop at Tunnel View.
This weekend-long event will be jam-packed with activities.
We will be meeting up with other Miata clubs early
Saturday, August 13th, in Fresno around noon. Following
lunch we will tour the Forestiere Underground Gardens.
After the tour we will drive into the mountains and check
into our hotel near Yosemite National Park. Later that
night we'll drive into the park and tour it in the light of a
full moon. On Sunday morning, we will have a leasurely
breakfast and then drive to Atwater and tour the Castle
Air Museum. Following the museum tour we will depart
for Sacramento.
Special added attraction... August 12-13 is the peak of
the annual Perseid meteor shower. Type A (a blend)
drives, travel required. HOTEL UPDATE: We will be staying
at the Mariposa Super 8. Call (209) 966-4288 and
ask for the $80 SAMOA rate for August 13th. Since this is
a prime vacation spot in season please make your reservation
as early as possible, as rooms fill up fast.
