"We have the right to enjoy"
ARISE defends nicotine. caffeine, chocolate and alcoho l
Coffee and cigarettes have a calming effect, says Professor David Warburton who
presides ARISE (Associates for Research Into the Science of Enjoyment), a fiveyear-old
international association studying the science of enjoyment. It believes in
moderate use of legal forms of enjoyment . People can choose whether they like It .
They are well aware of the dangers of alcohol, smoking etc. They should not feel
guilty about enjoying them . To show that people feel stress, and find out how they
fight It, ARISE surveyed 5296 people In 16 countries . For over hall, work was a
common source of stress. Almost half the Belgians felt that stress had increased .
And i in 5 has stayed off work because of stress .
Stress can be overcome by changes In the way work is organised . changing
working hours, going for a walk, coffee breaks, smoking or having a snack . After
work: friends, music, reading, TV, taking a bath, or eating out are good cures for
stress. Often these are on the "wish list", but are not used in practice .
Several quotes by Prof . Warburton .
Conclusion: the whole philosophy of ARISE: "The survey proves that people know
about the dangers of caffeine, nicotine, sweets and alcohol . So let them choose
themselves . The wave of neopuritanism, monitored by the authorities and experts
who decide what is good for us, is misleading" .
