From a study by a number of academic researchers, it appears that 55% of Belgian<br />

employees feel work is the main source of stress in their lives. After that come<br />

financial, personal and family problems, and unemployment . Almost half feel that<br />

stress has increased In the last two years . A third would change jobs given the<br />

chance. Men feel more stress,(partlcularly In the financial sector) . The main<br />

causes: too much work for too few people and problems with superiors . The result<br />

Is that 25% of Belgians are damotivated and do not enjoy their work. 20% of sick<br />

leave is due to stress .<br />

An international study by ARISE (an association of researchers specialising In the<br />

science of enjoyment) on 5000 people shows that stress is the most important<br />

stress factor for half of them. According to the study, chatting with colleagues,<br />

coffee breaks, a cigarette, snack or a variation in the work are the most common<br />

anti-stress remedies in Belgium . However, there Is pressure to do away with<br />

"relaxants" like smoking or eating snacks . ARISE defends people's right to make<br />

use of legal forms of enjoyment that can Improve their quality of life and make<br />

them happier .<br />

they are paid directly or I do not question their laboratory research . As for as their<br />

sociological research Is concerned I have a certain reticence but that is because I<br />

do not like this kind of Interview by phone which I think Is not representative<br />

enough."<br />
