TDK power inductors built with flexible terminations for
reliability at high temperatures
- Power-inductors feature a new flexible-termination design that overcomes
thermally-induced physical variation for improved reliability -
VLF12060/80 power inductors from TDK feature a new physical design that
effectively accommodates the effects of temperature variation for improved reliability
in harsh environments, such as automotive.
When subjected to temperature variation, a PCB will experience a change in physical
dimensions, as will any components placed on that board. However, if the change in
physical dimensions of the PCB is not equal to the change in physical dimensions of
the attached component, then the connections experience pressure. This results in
diminished reliability, and can cause the PCB-component connection to fracture.
The flexible-termination design of the VLF12060/80 family overcomes these
thermally-induced physical variations. Flexible terminations, high-quality materials
and an operating temperature range from -40°C to 150°C (including self heating),
significantly improves product reliability in harsh environments, such as automotive.
The VLF12060/80 power inductors fulfil AEC-Q200 automotive grade requirements
for passive components. The reduced footprint of 12mm x 12mm means that these
inductors can also offer reduced board-space requirements for these applications,
including ECMs, Airbag ECUs and DC-DC converters.
Inductance values are currently available from 4.7µH to 100µH. Across this range,
tolerance ratings of 20% or 30% are available, and DC-resistance values range from
11.5mΩ to 155mΩ, allowing for efficient operation. The VLF12060 and VLF12080 are
available now for volume production in 500-piece and 400-piece tape and reel format
respectively.
