REGIONS: MIDLANDS PEOPLE FOCUS CIPD Midlands Region, Employment Law Update – a great success The CIPD Midlands Region held a very successful breakfast briefing event recently in the Sheraton Hotel Athlone. The event focused on Employment Law and featured one of Ireland’s prominent experts, Alastair Purdy, Solicitor and Managing Director of Purdy Legal. Alastair is a graduate of NUI Galway having obtained both a BA Degree in Economics (1986) and an MA Degree in Economics (1987). He obtained a Diploma in Legal Studies from the DIT and passed the Solicitors Exams the first time whilst working full time. Alastair has extensive knowledge of the multinational sector having worked there for a number of years both in Ireland and abroad. Micheál thanked the Sheraton Hotel for hosting the event and welcomed all attendees, including CIPD members, business people and Vhi representatives who are sole sponsor of the CIPD Midlands Region. Alastair Purdy provided a very comprehensive overview on current trends in Legislation, including The Protection of Employment Act 2007, The Employment Rights Compliance Bill, The Corporate Manslaughter Bill and the Agency Worker Directive. He also provided an update on recent developments in case law which of course has considerable implications for both employers and employees and encompasses a broad variety of issues including mandatory retirement age, working time, fixed term working and victimisation to name but a few. The presentation was followed by a comprehensive question and answer session, with many of the attendees taking the opportunity to get feedback and guidance on complex employment legislation questions from the expert. The event entitled “ Update on Future Skills Needs ” will be hosted by AIT and will be presented by Anne Heraty, Chairperson of the Expert Group on Future Skills Needs and Chief Executive of Computer Placement (CPL) Resources plc. The Expert Group acts as the central national resource on skills and labour supply for the enterprise sector and an overall strategy for enterprise training in Ireland. The National Training Advisory Committee was merged with the Expert Group in Jan 2004 and the Group ’ s Mandate was expanded to incorporate the responsibilities formerly held by the NTAC. PEOPLE FOCUS REGIONS: MIDLANDS Official Launch of Midlands CIPD The CIPD Midlands Region held a very successful launch of their 2008/2009 programme of events in the Athlone Springs Hotel. The event was well attended by local business people, members and CIPD Ireland. Membership Advisor and Paul Forrester, Independent News & Media Mike McDonnell, Director of CIPD Ireland congratulated the CIPD Midlands Region on their “very interesting and relevant programme of events for 2008/9”. He said he was delighted with the progress of the Midlands CIPD group and said it has grown from strength to strength. He also congratulated the committee for their work with a special mention of the relationship with the AIT in regard to the Certificate in Personnel Practice course now available and wished the committee continued success in the future. Mike also mention that the Midlands Programme of event hit on key issues facing companies in the present environment and would be very beneficial to companies. The sole sponsors for the Midlands Committee is Vhi Healthcare and they were represented at the event by Stephen McMahon Regional Manager Vhi. “ Vhi Healthcare has had a long association with CIPD on both a regional and national basis this sponsorship reflects how we feel about the positive influence which CIPD has on business throughout Ireland. As such we are delighted to be the main sponsor for the CIPD Midlands Region in 2008 /2009” Micheál Coughlan indicated that the goal of the CIPD Midlands Region committee this year “ is to increase membership and expand the role of CIPD within the HR field. Overall the programme of events for 2008/2009 has something for all HR and Business professionals in the midlands region. A brochure of events was launched indicating speakers on topics such as Employment Law, Overview on the Future Skills Needs in the Midlands Gateway Region in conjunction with the Midlands Gateway Chamber, A Practical Guide to Assessment & Psychological Testing, HR Excellence Awards and culminated in the end of year AGM in April 2009.
