Curvaceous - Curvaceous is owned by Robert and Madeleine Mount of
Santa Rosa, CA. She is a 1938 - 24' Greavette Streamliner powered by a 6
cylinder Chrysler Crown. The restoration was completed by Van Dam
Custom Boats - Boyne City, MI. in September 2010. Mounts took delivery
of Curvaceous after the 2010 ACBS Annual Show at Bay Harbor, MI where
she was first shown. This will be her first appearance in California.
THUNDERBIRD - The Thunderbird Yacht, a 55’ mahogany
and stainless steel commuter designed by John Hacker in 1939 is
nestled in her berth at Whittell’s Thunderbird Lodge.
Commissioned as an all-weather commuter in 1939, George
Whittell, Jr. directed famous Naval architect John Hacker to design
a vessel along the lines of Whittell’s Duisenberg automobiles and
DC-2 aircraft. Ben Huskin’s Bay City, Michigan Boat Works
executed the design and finished the craft in record time. Following
sea trials on the Saginaw River and Lake Huron, Thunderbird was
shipped aboard a railroad flatcar to Truckee, California and then up
the short line to Tahoe City Marina where Whittell launched her on
July 13, 1940. Thunderbird went idle during the years following
World War II. In 1963, having only 83 original hours on the
engines, Bill Harrah purchased and proclaimed her his “70 mph
cocktail lounge”. Replacing the upright Kermaths with twin
trans-mounted Allison V-1710 engines salvaged from vintage
WWII fighter aircraft, Mr. Harrah achieved his speed goal,
covered a portion of the deck, and gained some much-needed
additional deck space. Following Mr. Harrah’s death,
Thunderbird was sold at auction during the breakup of Harrah’s
substantial Auto Collection. Lake Tahoe’s most famous watercraft was privately owned until 2007. As her last private owner
contemplated divesting herself of Thunderbird, a Nevada charity sprang into action to facilitate the art deco-styled vessel
remaining at the Lodge and plying Tahoe’s azure blue waters for generations to come. She is now owned by the Thunderbird
Preservation Society.
Good Grief - Michael and Kathleen Scroggie
of Laguna Niguel, CA enter Good Grief (hull
#348688) a 1940 Barrel Back Runabout 19” length
with a 120 HP Hercules "M" engine. It was shipped
to Wilmington, CA configured for high altitude use
(presumably Lake Arrowhead). The boat was
restored by Tim Robinson and has been owned by
Mike & Kathy Scroggie since 2001.
