6 South Tahoe Wooden Boat Classic 2010
This year’s “South Tahoe Wooden Boat Classic” at Tahoe Keys Marina & Yacht Club will be our Chapter’s fourth formally judged show. Our Parent organization, the “Antique & Classic Boat Society”, has established boat judging guidelines which we will follow in comparing the current condition of the boats to the standard of original “as-new”, “as-delivered” condition. We have assembled a team of sixteen judges, all with many years of boat show judging experience as well as hands-on knowledge gained during many years of researching and restoring their own boats. A few of our judges are professional restorers with dozens of successful restorations to their credit. Judging will be based on a 100-point system divided into five sections including: Exterior; General Appearance; Quality of Finish; Instruments and Hardware; Interior & Upholstery; and Engine & Engine Compartment. There will be a two-track system where “preserved” boats and “restored” boats will be held to different standards. A boat must retain at least 60% of its original side and deck planking and framing to qualify as “preserved”, replacement bottoms are expected. Sample copies of our score sheet will be available at the entrance of the show. There will be multiple First, Second, and Third place awards in each class with each boat competing against a standard of “as-new, as-delivered” condition. Additionally there will be many overall awards, as shown below. Our goal through this judging process is to help our fellow Chapter members bring their boats to a higher level of originality while preserving and maintaining them. At the same time, we want to encourage our Chapter members to use and appreciate their boats for all of the boating fun they can deliver. We have many boats with new restorations, but are proud of the fact that our members do use their boats and our scoring system is designed to equitably consider all of these facts. The boats entered in the show will be separated into classes including Utilities, Runabouts under 22’, Runabouts 22’ and over, Italian Rivas, Race Boats, Current Production, and two new classes: Modified boats, and Outboard Motor Powered boats. The Modified class has been developed to include vintage boats with modern engines and transmissions, as well as other non original components. The boat should appear basically era correct, with Judging following standard guidelines used on other boats, but not with regards to originality. The Outboard Class has been developed to include the outboard powered boats that were so prevalent throughout the history of power boating. Happy Boating! Paul C.
