This year members can tour Lake Tahoe on our
featured ride boat, White Smoke.
.
White Smoke is a 1930 Sea Lyon that was originally
owned by the Pope family. She is the newest
member of the museum’s collection but comes to us
with a long and impressive history. As the
museum’s library shows, the beginning of this Sea
Lyon’s life featured an extensive racing career. Her
owner, George Pope, and make, appear on Tahoe
Yacht Clubs race programs numerous times, but the
name White Smoke didn’t show-up until Alan Furth
purchased her in 1985, from the Pope Family. It is
now widely believed that Furth chose this name
based off of the Catholic tradition in which the
world knows the Vatican officials have elected a
new pope by issuing white smoke from their
chimney.
Howard and Judy Guilds purchased White Smoke in
1999 and the Guilds enjoyed their lovely toy for a
decade, during which time she saw frequent use.
But the time had come for White Smoke to enter
another chapter in her life, and recently Howard
and Judy Guild donated the famous Sea Lyon to the
Tahoe Maritime Museum in memory of their parents
Phelps & Elizabeth Guild and Bob & Ruth Gesey. As
Guild explains it, "Our motivation for donating the
boat to the museum was to preserve a piece of Lake
Tahoe for all to share. We always felt that we were
temporary custodians of a piece of history which we
had the pleasure of enjoying for some 10 years."
Thanks to the Guilds' generosity, their lovely Tahoe
native, now beginning her ninth decade at Lake
Tahoe, will be a source of enjoyment and edification
for countless Museum visitors in the years to come.
White Smoke spent her entire life on the lake, and
we are happy to return her to the water this
summer. Rides on this one of a kind boat are
available for Tahoe Maritime Museum members at
the $100 or higher level. Proceeds go to the care
and preservation of White Smoke and the other
amazing boats in the collection.
