Trading places: Emerging markets move to the forefront
region for the year. Even though there are
signs of recovery, U.S. industrial production
(Chart 14) and unemployment (Chart
15) trendlines are showing that it will take
4-6 years before the U.S. economy reaches
pre-great recession growth rates and
Europe may take even longer. Emerging
markets such as Africa, South America and
parts of Asia will supplement the shortfalls
in the established economies (Chart 16).
Solar demand growth will continue to be
driven by political and economic policies
and manufacturing capacity is becoming
more balanced as the industry transforms
to a lean, mean fighting machine.
Cells modules panels
Aalto University, Finland and Fraunhofer
ISE, Germany researchers achieved 18.7%
efficiency for black silicon solar cells.
Alta Devices achieved 30.8% efficiency
record with “dual junction” solar cell technology.
ART Solar opened 250,000 module/year
photovoltaic solar panel manufacturing
plant in Durban, South Africa.
ASOLA Automotive Solar Deutschland
filed for insolvency.
Bharat Heavy Electricals invested Rs 800
crore in an integrated manufacturing plant
for solar ingots, wafers, cells & panels using

Innotech Solar
• increased its solar photovoltaic manufacturing
in Halle/Saale, Germany and
Glava, Sweden to 100 MW.

temperature coefficient of minus 0.39%
per Kelvin in a photon test.
JA Solar began mass production of metal
wrap-through monocrystalline and multicrystalline
cells with an average conversion
efficiency of 19.6% and 18.1%.
Jusung Engineering set up a solar cell and
module manufacturing facility in Kerala,
India.
Kyocera shifted San Diego, California
manufacturing operations to Tijuana,
Mexico.
Lanco plans to open 300 MW photovoltaic
solar cell manufacturing plant in
special economic zone in Rajnandgaon of
Chhattisgarh in 2014.

• defaulted on $7.2 million payment due
to cash shortage.
• Solar Board of Director, Liangbao Zhu
resigned.
• sold additional 25,000,000 newly issued
ordinary shares to Fulai Investments.
MEMC appointed Randy Zwirn to its
Board of Directors.
Natcore advanced its black silicon solar
cells to 14.7% efficiency.
Neo Solar merged with DelSolar.
Photowatt plans to open 11,000m2 in
photovoltaic module assembly plant in
Vaulx-Milieu, France in October 2013.
Sharp
• increased its triple-junction solar cell
efficiency to 37.9%.
• downsized its solar cell businesses in
Europe and moved focus to growth
markets such as Southeast Asia.
Solairedirect will produce 120 MW of
ReneSola’s photovoltaic modules in South
Africa.
Solar Frontier resumed production at
its 60-MW solar panel plant in Miyazaki
prefecture, Japan.
Solar Junction and IQE partnered to
develop satellite solar cells.
Solar3D began fabrication of its next
prototype of its next generation silicon
solar cell.
SolarWorld received French “Made in
