social outreach Sisterhood News LAURIE STONE BROFSKY Are you thinking what I used to think? Well, think again—this is NOT your Bubbe’s Sisterhood! We’ll remain relevant to members of our congregation, young and not so young, as we transition through life as Jewish women in the 21st century. After all, so many of the things we’ll do are intergenerational— they cut across time and age and continue to bind us together. Like preparing for holidays. Reading and discussing books. Making head coverings. Knitting. And playing mah jongg, too. Isn’t it amazing how these oldies but goodies are on the popular pastime list for everyone now?! Our Sisterhood won’t confine ourselves to the things we were “allowed” to do or simply to the traditional things women used to do. This year, we will do what only WE can do—provide programming to educate and empower WOMEN, be that in financial planning or Torah study—with, of course, a women’s perspective! As far as we have gotten in society, women still have a long way to go, here and everywhere. We need to help each other get there, to realize our potential, our worth. Yes, Sisterhood is synonymous with women’s issues; we’ll bring programs and lectures toward this end. But remember, too, that women’s issues manifest themselves during book discussions, around the mah jongg tables, while creating head coverings, and in the course of collecting warm clothing and delivering necessities to the food pantry. And as we work and play together, we learn from each other. Sisterhood serves as the support for women as they transition from home to work to home again—daily or over a lifetime—providing intellectual stimulations as well as recreation. This is an exciting year for our Synagogue and an exciting time for Sisterhood as well. Look for our membership information in the mail and join us. Participate in any or all of our varied programs and activities designed with women in mind. Know that together we will grow with, learn from, play alongside and provide support for each other. Cover Your Head in Style OCTOBER 26 AT 7:00 PM Join Sisterhood as we host a Women’s League for Conservative Judaism BQLI Region Intergenerational Evening Workshop to beautify the mitzvah (Hiddur Mitzvah) of covering your head. Find out why we cover our head and have fun while you create a beautiful jeweled women’s Kippah. You will go home with your own glimmering head cover made with crystal, pearls and semi precious stones! $25 includes instructions and materials RSVP by October 10th to laurieltd@aol.com People are Hungry and You Can Help! ONGOING Sisterhood collects Kosher canned and packaged food year round. Please leave your donations in the Lucite box in the Lobby.. WARM CLOTHING DRIVE November 6–7 Sunday 9 am–1 pm Monday 4–6 pm We are collecting coats, jackets, suits, gloves, hats, scarfs, mufflers, sweaters, etc., to help needy men, woman and children keep warm this winter.
