• I expected to see streets crowded with bicycles and
people in Mao Jackets
• The Central Government was going to be very visible
and heavy-handed
• The people would be somewhat suspicious of
foreigners and hard to approach
• Business methods would be difficult to understand
• Banking and finance would be almost impossible to
deal with
