Historic Uses <strong>of</strong> Adjoining Properties<br />

East Commerce Street was located adjacent north <strong>of</strong> the subject site prior to 1896 <strong>and</strong><br />

up until the date <strong>of</strong> the site reconnaissance. Two (2) residential dwellings were listed<br />

north <strong>of</strong> East Commerce Street in 1896. A black smith shop <strong>and</strong> two (2) residential<br />

dwellings were located to the north in 1912. According to the city directories review, a<br />

service station was located at the northwest corner <strong>of</strong> the intersection <strong>of</strong> East Commerce<br />

Street <strong>and</strong> North Hackberry Street from at least 1922-23 to 1973. <strong>The</strong> <strong>San</strong> <strong>Antonio</strong> Fire<br />

Station was also located north <strong>of</strong> the subject site from at least 1922-23 to 1993. At the<br />

time <strong>of</strong> the site visit, Imperial Loan <strong>and</strong> Jewelry Company <strong>and</strong> the <strong>San</strong> <strong>Antonio</strong> Fire<br />

Station 3 were located north <strong>of</strong> the subject site.<br />

South Hackberry Street was located adjacent east <strong>of</strong> the subject site prior to 1896 <strong>and</strong><br />

up until the date <strong>of</strong> the site reconnaissance. Residential dwellings <strong>and</strong> an unidentified<br />

commercial store were located east <strong>of</strong> South Hackberry Street between 1896 <strong>and</strong> 1912.<br />

A service station was listed at the southeast corner <strong>of</strong> East Commerce Street <strong>and</strong> South<br />

Hackberry Street from at least 1922-23 to 1957. This historic service station was<br />

identified as Commerce Quick Stop during the site visit. An automotive repair <strong>and</strong><br />

body shop was listed east <strong>of</strong> the subject site from at least 1951 <strong>and</strong> up until the date <strong>of</strong><br />

the site visit. This automotive repair <strong>and</strong> body shop was identified as Manuel Paint &<br />

Body Shop during the site reconnaissance.<br />

Idaho Street traveled parallel to the southern property line <strong>of</strong> the subject site prior to<br />

1896 <strong>and</strong> up until the date <strong>of</strong> the site reconnaissance. Residential properties were<br />

located south <strong>of</strong> Idaho Street from at least 1896 <strong>and</strong> up until the date <strong>of</strong> the site visit.<br />

Residential dwellings were located adjacent east <strong>of</strong> the subject site prior to 1896 <strong>and</strong> up<br />

until between 1912 <strong>and</strong> 1951 when commercial stores were developed adjacent south <strong>of</strong><br />

East Commerce Street.<br />

6. SITE RECONNAISSANCE<br />

6.1 Methodology <strong>and</strong> Limiting Conditions<br />

<strong>The</strong> objective <strong>of</strong> the site reconnaissance is to obtain information indicating the<br />

likelihood <strong>of</strong> identifying ASTM recognized environmental conditions in<br />

connection with the subject site to the extent not obstructed by bodies <strong>of</strong> water,<br />

adjacent buildings, dense vegetation, or other obstacles.<br />

<strong>The</strong> subject site <strong>and</strong> adjoining properties were visually observed on October 24<br />

<strong>and</strong> December 20, 2012 by Pape-Dawson environmental pr<strong>of</strong>essionals. <strong>The</strong><br />

purpose <strong>of</strong> the reconnaissance was to note evidence <strong>of</strong> recognized environmental<br />

conditions. Additionally, reconnaissance <strong>of</strong> the adjoining properties was<br />

performed to identify l<strong>and</strong> use <strong>and</strong> the associated potential for producing<br />
