8. POTENTIAL FOR AVOCADO PRODUCTION DEVELOPMENT<br />

Ch<strong>in</strong>a has a great potential for avocado production development. It is estimated that<br />

Ch<strong>in</strong>a will have a population of 1.6 billion by <strong>the</strong> year 2030. It has called <strong>the</strong> attention of <strong>the</strong><br />

Ch<strong>in</strong>ese government to secur<strong>in</strong>g food for <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g population. <strong>Avocado</strong> fruit is very<br />

nutritious <strong>and</strong> can be eaten fresh. <strong>Avocado</strong> products will have a large market when accepted<br />

by <strong>the</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>ese people.<br />

There is a stretch of hilly l<strong>and</strong> suited for avocado plant<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> south of Ch<strong>in</strong>a. The<br />

tropical <strong>and</strong> subtropical l<strong>and</strong> covers some 48 million ha <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a, distributed <strong>in</strong> Guangdong,<br />

Guangxi, Ha<strong>in</strong>an, Fujian, Yunnan, Guizhou <strong>and</strong> Sichuan; <strong>the</strong> l<strong>and</strong> under tropical <strong>and</strong><br />

subtropical economic crops covers only 6.385 million ha at present. There is also a vast tract<br />

of hilly l<strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> southwest of Ch<strong>in</strong>a, a large part of which is suited to develop<strong>in</strong>g tropical<br />

<strong>and</strong> subtropical economic crops such as avocado.<br />

Ch<strong>in</strong>a has good varieties available for <strong>the</strong> development of avocado production.<br />

Research work carried out has resulted <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> selection of over 80 avocado varieties; also,<br />

appropriate production techniques, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g propagation, transplant<strong>in</strong>g, manur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong><br />

fertilizer application, control of pests <strong>and</strong> diseases, harvest<strong>in</strong>g, storage <strong>and</strong> shipment, have<br />

been determ<strong>in</strong>ed. This can ensure availability of nursery plants <strong>and</strong> production technology<br />

for <strong>the</strong> development of avocado production <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a.<br />

9. CONSTRAINTS IN AVOCADO PRODUCTION DEVELOPMENT<br />

Little awareness of avocado<br />

<strong>Avocado</strong> is a very nutritious fruit, conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g fat, prote<strong>in</strong>, vitam<strong>in</strong>s, m<strong>in</strong>erals <strong>and</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>r elements. Most Ch<strong>in</strong>ese are not aware of <strong>the</strong> nutritional value of avocado. <strong>Avocado</strong><br />

fruits are consumed fresh as are o<strong>the</strong>r fruits at present <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a. They are nei<strong>the</strong>r sweet nor<br />

sour <strong>and</strong> hence less favoured compared to o<strong>the</strong>r tropical <strong>and</strong> subtropical fruits such as litchi,<br />

longan, mango, etc. It is hard to popularize a cold dish, s<strong>and</strong>wich <strong>and</strong> salad made with<br />

avocado. It will take time for <strong>the</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>ese people to accept avocado, <strong>and</strong> publicity is<br />

necessary.<br />

Difficulty <strong>in</strong> market<strong>in</strong>g<br />

The avocado market has yet to be developed s<strong>in</strong>ce very few people know <strong>the</strong><br />

nutritional value of this fruit. In <strong>the</strong> early 1990s, avocados were shipped <strong>and</strong> marketed <strong>in</strong> big<br />

cities such as Beij<strong>in</strong>g, Shanghai <strong>and</strong> Guangzhou; however, only some large hotels with<br />

foreign cooks showed <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> this fruit. Difficult market<strong>in</strong>g has given adverse impact to<br />

<strong>the</strong> expansion of <strong>the</strong> plant<strong>in</strong>g area for commercial production.<br />

<strong>Avocado</strong> has a short storage life under normal temperature. Cold storage <strong>and</strong><br />

shipment <strong>in</strong>crease cost <strong>and</strong> farmers will not take <strong>the</strong> risk of sell<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir avocado far away <strong>in</strong><br />

small markets. The <strong>in</strong>dustrial dem<strong>and</strong> is very limited <strong>and</strong> it is hard to stimulate expansion<br />

although avocado facecream <strong>and</strong> soap are produced to some extent. <strong>Avocado</strong> fruits are<br />

marketed locally at low price, discourag<strong>in</strong>g farmers from plant<strong>in</strong>g avocado trees.<br />
